Where Are They Now? Rubio Long Snapper Brendan Lopez

NCAA FOOTBALL: OCT 16 Oregon State at WashingtonFor the next installment of “Where Are They Now?” we venture to Seattle, WA (Go Hawks!) to hear from Rubio Long Snapper Brendan Lopez. Brendan was a top Long Snapper for Rubio Long Snapping in 2007. He started off as a preferred walk-on to Michigan but came back to University of Washington and was put on full scholarship!

1.  What is your current occupation?  I am currently in my last year at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. I will complete my training in June 2016 and pursue further speciality training in periodontics. I am also a Rubio Long Snapping staff member for the Seattle, WA area.

2. Where do you live? Seattle, WA.

3. Married/ Kids? Nooooooo

4. What is your fondest memory of your time playing college football? Spending time with my teammates. Whether is was during off season workouts, fall camp, traveling to away games or celebrating after a big win, the best part of college football were the friends and relationships that came from it. 

5. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snappers, what would it be? Be patient, enjoy the process and have a good life balance. Maintaining other areas of your life outside of football is very important. Don’t forget about friendships outside of football and focus on your education. Have a plan for after college and use football to help you get there. 

6. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snapping PARENTS, what would it be? Never want something more than your kid does. 

7. When was the last time you snapped a ball and for what reason? Vegas XXVI. Next one will be XXVII. 

ELKJQDSGVNISCLQ.20130529005445 8.   If you could go back and play football in college again, would you go to the same school or a different one? Why? No doubt I would choose University of Washington again. I love Seattle and it’s an excellent school.

 9. Any regrets during college? Something you wish you had done or maybe hadn’t? Aim lower on my first snap at BYU. Sailing it for a safety with my parents in the stands was pretty embarrassing. 

10.   What tremendous thing have you been a part of or experienced since you graduated? Celebrating in the streets of downtown Seattle after the Seahawks won Super Bowl 48. That was tremendous.

Where Are They Now? Rubio Long Snapper Corey Adams

corey adamsFor the next installment of “Where Are They Now?” we venture to Colorado to hear from Rubio Long Snapper Corey Adams. Corey was the #1 Long Snapper for Rubio Long Snapping in 2007 and has some of the quickest hands you will see. Incredible Long Snapper and an even better person.

1.  What is your current occupation?  I currently work as a financial analyst at Lockheed Martin and as a Rubio Long Snapping staff member in CO.

2. Where do you live? Colorado Springs, CO.

3. Married/ Kids? Married to my wife, Karrington, for two and a half years. We are expecting our first child any day now.

4. What is your fondest memory of your time playing college football? My fondest memory from playing college football would probably be my very first game my freshman year. We were playing down at Auburn, in front of 90,000+ fans, plus a national TV audience. My high school team was really bad, and I think the biggest crowd we played in front of was MAYBE 1,000 people. Plus, Auburn’s stadium was about three times the size of my hometown, so getting to play in front of that many people for my first college game was pretty memorable.

Also, all the time spent with all the guys on the team. Whether it was workouts, class, practice or study table, it was a just always a good time getting to hang out with them.

5. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snappers, what would it be? The one bit of advice I would give to Rubio Long Snappers would be to not have any regrets. The very first team meeting at Kansas State, one of our seniors stood up and told us freshman “The days are long but the years are short”. We all thought he was crazy and upset his time was almost up, but before we knew it, we were playing our last game together. That being said, whether it is a homework assignment/test, practice, workout, or just time with your friends/family,  do not take any of it for granted; put 100% effort in and enjoy every second because once it is all over, you will miss it. 

media_sports_m-footbl_auto_action_6053390-14346997279916. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snapping PARENTS, what would it be? The one piece of advice i would give to Rubio Long Snapping parents would be to support your son when needed, but also give him the space to grow. I know there were times growing up when I was snapping with my Dad, and he knew exactly how to judge when to get on my case about snapping harder, lock my legs out etc, or give me my space to get something figured out on my own. Also, when your son is getting ready to transition from High School to College, be there to support him in any decisions he has to make, but give him the space to make his own decisions and speak to the coaching staffs on his own. This transition isn’t always going to be smooth, but at that time of anyone lives is critical to advancing in life.

7. When was the last time you snapped a ball and for what reason? Last time I snapped a football was the Pro/College demo at Vegas XXVI. It was the first one I had snapped in a while, and my form wasn’t what you would call “good”. Rubio texted me a picture of how bad it was, and since then I would like to consider myself retired, until the urge comes up to snap next Vegas.

 8.   If you could go back and play football in college again, would you go to the same school or a different one? Why? If i was going back and playing college football again, no doubt in my mind I would pick Kansas State. I loved the small town feel and all the support for the football program. I was able to meet my wife there, and have made so many life long friends, I couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else.

 9. Any regrets during college? Something you wish you had done or maybe hadn’t? I really don’t have any regrets from college. I was able to get my degree, had the opportunity to play in the NFL, and was able to find a good job once it was all said and done.

10.   What tremendous thing have you been a part of or experienced since you graduated? The coolest thing I have experienced since graduating (probably going to sound geeky) is getting to learn/work with some of the technology that our Department of Defense develops and uses. Some of the things seem like they would be made for a movie and are pretty unimaginable. It’s just neat to know the advancements we are making in those fields.

Why Jake Munoz Being Offered a Scholarship is Such a BIG Deal

Earlier today, I posted on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin that Rubio Long Snapper Jake Munoz (GA, ’16) had been offered a full scholarship to Georgia St.

You may have glanced at this for a moment and just thought, oh, just another Rubio Long Snapper headed to college. If you did that, you shouldn’t have and here is why.

For those of that don’t know, Munoz has Retinal Cone Dystophy (an inherited ocular disorder characterized by the loss of cone cells, the photoreceptors responsible for both central and color vision). In layman’s terms, Munoz sees, at all times, like a “normal” person does right when they come out of a noon movie into extremely bright sunshine outside. You know what I am talking about? Been in the dark for a couple hours, you walk out of the movie and the outside world is the brightest thing on the planet. It basically hurts your eyes, you immediately squint and your vision is VERY limited.

That is Jake Munoz’s life AT ALL TIMES and he just earned a full scholarship to be a Long Snapper in college. What an absolute stud and I am extremely proud of how far he has come in the past couple of years with Rubio Long Snapping.

Congratulations to Munoz and his whole family on this incredible accomplishment.

The rankings are completed for the 2017 Long Snappers that participated at VEGAS XXVI!

Long Snappers in this class came out from over twenty states to get the best instruction and most exposure for Long Snappers in the country.

TOP 2017 LONG SNAPPERS:

  • Thomas Fletcher left no doubt at all that he is the best 2017 Long Snapper in the country. Handles pressure as well as anyone I have ever had and has zero wasted movement. He could snap in college right now and he is only heading into his junior year.
  • Mitch Hall was excellent all weekend and he is beginning to start with a lot of confidence. Incredible form.
  • Nate Durham shows great power and speed on the ball.
  • Austin Reeves is a Long Snapper that could take the top spot within the year. Silent, but deadly.
  • Shiloh Mast is really let the ball fly. Size will be key for him.
  • Joe Calcagno is on the cusp of absolute dominance. Watch him closely over the next year.
  • Jake Pagel is strong and consistent. Watch him.
  • Matthew Smith is a flat out stud. Lots of potential.
  • Koltin Anderson is a very strong Long Snapper with tons of raw power.
  • Ryan Culbertson never disappoints and can snap at the next level.
  • Kyle O’Connor might be one of the most accurate Long Snappers in his class.
  • Kyle Gibbs was very impressive. He is very raw and could be one of the greats.
  • Devin Noth has all of the tools to be one of the best ever.
  • Jake Hess is coming along nicely and headed in the right direction. Consistency of speed will be key.

VEGAS XXVI – 40 Times

Here are the 40 yard dash times from the VEGAS XXVI Event on May 9-10, 2015. These are the averages of two 40 yard dashes run by the Long Snappers. The clock starts as soon as ANY part of the Long Snapper moves and stops as soon as they pass the finish line.

VEGAS XXVI (our May Event) is the second largest Long Snapping camp in the world. The first was VEGAS XXV in January.

What Coaches Will Ask a Recruit

Everyone always wants to know the key questions a coach will ask their son/daughter when they are getting recruited and the truth is, it’s the basics…

  • “So, what’s up?”
  • “How is school?”
  • “How is the weather?”
  • “How are your grades?”
  • “Would you be interested in coming to _____________ to get your degree and play some football?”

Right now, you are thinking “this is a joke, Rubio.” No, it is not. The coach is not looking to solve the world’s problems by speaking to your kid. He is simply trying to see if your kid is a moron or not.

Seriously.

They just want to hear the athlete speak, make sure he/she is not an idiot and someone that can operate on their own without mommy/daddy speaking for them.

So, you want to prep your kid? Just speak to them.

5 Things a Parents Should Be During the Recruiting Process….

1. SUPPORTIVE!
Your child will need you more than ever during this period. This will be extra challenging as they are a teen and know it all. Therefore, you must remain supportive and on their team. Guide them in the right direction but let them walk the path.

2. ORGANIZED!
There will be tons of pamphlets, camps, emails, directions and communication. A teen usually has too much on their plate to manage it all. This is where an adult’s organization skills can hopefully relieve some pressure off the athlete.

3. A ROLE PLAYER!
Practice with your child the conversations he/she will have with the coaches and recruiting coordinators. It looks terrible when a coach asks an athlete a question and the athlete looks to mommy or daddy for the answer. Even worse is if mommy or daddy simply answers for the athlete.

4. OPEN-MINDED!
Not every athlete is going to attend the top D1 schools in the country. If your son wants to play, there are literally hundreds of schools out there with teams. Find several that aren’t necessarily on your radar and embrace them. There is something out there for everyone.

5. IN THE BACKGROUND!
The coach doesn’t want to talk to you. Trust me, I speak to them all the time. They are recruiting the athlete, NOT you. Like I have said a hundred times, when you (the parent) were dating your spouse, did you want to date them or their parents? Exactly. Stay in the background and let your son/daughter be a big boy/girl. This goes for interviews with sports writers, as well. Let the athlete speak for themselves.

3 Things That Will Upset a Coach

Starting a text with “I have a question“

  • JUST ASK! Now, you have wasted the coach’s time and have put him in a bad mood right off the bat. Just come out with your question right off the bat. All he is going to say is “Ok” and then you are going to ask the question. He will be busy enough, so he doesn’t need to double up questions.

Starting a text or email with “I know you are really busy but….“

  • If you know the person is busy, why are you bothering them? You will just end up upsetting them. You don’t want to be known as that kid.

Bragging to them about meaningless things

  • There is no need to tell them you are the top Long Snapper at your high school. We should hope so for the love of all that is holy. Definitely no need to brag about being the top Long Snapper at a camp that had ten kids at it. That would be like Sailer bragging he has more hair than me…not really saying much:)

5 Key Points for the Class of 2015 Long Snappers

  • You still have a long way to go with recruiting. Breathe, relax, take a chill pill. Read THIS ten more times. Laminate it. Memorize it. Breathe. Every single year, I will have a couple Long Snappers get picked up in August of their senior year. Yes, the August that is about 8 months from now. TONS will happen between the time you read this and August. Like I always tell everyone, this is probably your first time going through the recruitment of a Long Snapper…just think of how many times I have done it.
  • You should be attending every single Rubio Long Snapping camp this spring that is near you (yes, VEGAS XXVI as well)….just like normal. Those that take their foot off the gas because “they are committed” end up really struggling as they enter college. Trust me, I have seen it hundreds of times. Nothing will piss off a coach more than recruiting a kid and he isn’t VERY ready when he steps on campus.
  • In the summer, you should attend the Rubio Long Snapping College Camp for College Long Snappers to see how really compare to Long Snappers that are already in college. Welcome to the real world my friends.
  • Be someone to be followed and lead by example. Don’t be the guy that future Long Snappers ask “What ever happened to ________ and why didn’t he ever pan out?”
  • Be SMART and end your high school career strong. Be nice to everyone on the way out and be ready to move on.

PS….DO NOT EVEN THINK YOU SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR MY STAFF UNTIL YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELF IN COLLEGE. Until you arrive on your college campus, you should be busting your butt so you can dominate at the next level. Doing well in high school is one thing, doing well in college and in the NFL is a whole new ball game.

Don’t Be a “That Guy” on Social Media

Don’t be “that guy” who….

  • Leaves an open-ended post just waiting for someone to chime in. Confused? You have seen them, trust me, you have seen them. They go like this “Such a bad day, can’t believe that just happened….” For the love of all that is holy man, it is so obvious that you are looking for someone to ask you what happened and, honestly, it is a bit pathetic. If you have to profess your emotional needs on social media, you might need to focus on finding some good friends that you can talk to on a more personal level instead of shotgun blasting a question out that says more about you then you even know (or maybe you do, which is even worse).
  • Posts a #WCW (Women Crush Wednesday, for those not in the know) EVERY SINGLE WEEK. We get it, you have a girlfriend. We are proud of you. High five. If your lady friend needs you to continuously tell her that she is your crush, you must be the worst boyfriend in the world. I am hoping that you are showing her enough affection and attention that she can figure it out more than once a week, on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. What makes this even worse, is when you do it with every new girlfriend you have every other week.
  • Talks about your “GRIND.” We get it, you are working hard. So is everyone else and while you took the time out to “talk” about your “grind” your opponent was probably snapping another ball, lifting another weight, stretching another body part or studying some more film. Be silent about your “grind” and let your actions do the talking on the field.
  • Likes their own post. That is beyond sad. You obviously like your own post as you posted it. Come on!
  • Retweets something you find hilarious but others might find offensive. Remember, if you retweet or repost a moron, you are a moron.

It is a VERY, VERY fine line and you have to know what it is. It is actually for every person. I want my Long Snappers to be toeing that line and have the killer instinct of a shark. When you go head to head with another Long Snapper, you should almost feel bad for them since you know you are going to crush them. Confidence is backing what you say up without being an idiot about the whole thing. Cockiness is bragging about what you are doing while being an idiot about the whole thing.

The Chris Rubio Award is presented, on an annual basis, to the best national high school Long Snapper for that given season. Past winners include Scott Daly of Notre Dame (2011), Cole Mazza of Alabama (2012) and Blake Ferguson (committed to LSU).

Chris Rubio played high school football for Charter Oak High School in California from 1989-1992.  He was part of team that won the league championship in 1992 serving as the teams Long Snapper and left tackle.  He was voted Center of the Century in the San Gabriel Valley.  His long snapping ability earned him a spot on the UCLA football team where he was a 3-year starter at Long Snapper for three All-Americans.

The National Long Snapper of the Year is named in honor of Chris Rubio for his outstanding high school career and nearly single handedly changing the world of long snapping.  Chris is now the most prominent private long snapping coach in America.  He has made the position of long snapping a specialty and revered around the country through his website, as well as camps.  Through his training and development of young long snappers, dozens of high school long snapping specialists now receive full ride scholarships each year for their skill in that position.

2015 Rubio Long Snapper Writes a Book!

Over the summer, I was approached by Rubio Long Snapper Jackson Wilder (WA, 2015) and his father while I was in Seattle, WA about something they wanted to do “with” Rubio Long Snapping.

Turns out, Jackson was in the process of writing a book (yes, an actual book) on the life of a Rubio Long Snapper. I kinda thought they were kidding until they sent me some drafts and asked my approval. Many months and revisions later, I present to you….

Long Snapping: A Three Quarter Second Snapshot into the High School Life of a Rubio Long Snapper by Jackson Wilder available on Amazon!

The book is 120 pages long, written very well and describes Jackson’s journey throughout high school as a Rubio Long Snapper. He has some great sections on Vegas and the first time he met me for a lesson. Needless to say, a very interesting read and, given, it would make a solid Christmas gift.

ASK RUBIO

Starting tomorrow, I will begin an “ASK RUBIO” column within this blog.

It will be very similar to a Ann Landers or Dear Abby column you would see in your local paper or online. If you don’t know who they are, find a newspaper and look in it…or just click on the links:)

Bottom line, you ask me a question, any question, and I will answer it…..

BUT, I will do it my own way and in my own words (think Rubio turned up to level 10+).

These columns do NOT have to deal only with Long Snapping and, to be honest, I would prefer they not. Seriously, 99.9% of the Long Snapping questions you have can be EASILY answered on RubioLongSnapping.com or on RubiosBlog.com

So, feel free to pepper me with any questions you have on any topic you would like me to cover. This is open to all…grandparents, parents, Long Snappers, lady friends, etc. Just go ahead and send your question(s) to Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com with the subject line: ASK RUBIO.

All names will remain private. Just sign it with a creative title (Northwest Long Snapper, Confused in Cali, Sir Snaps A Lot, etc.)

FYI: First one will come out tomorrow at 10:00 am pst and will deal with a Long Snapper and his girlfriend. Be ready….

Rubio Long Snapper & TOP 12er John Sheperdson Chosen for All-Star Game

John Sheperdson, 2011 See his profile at www ChrisLong time Rubio Long Snapper John Sheperdson of Cal has been selected to participate in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl!

John has been the starter for three years and has done extremely well throughout his high school and college career.
