Which Rubio Long Snapping Camps Should I Attend and When?

One of the most common questions that I get asked is, “Which camps should my son attend and when?”.

I have been running Long Snapping lessons, camps, and national events for over a decade now so I know what works out the best for the athletes. In a perfect world, here is exactly what I would do as a parent, and most likely will be doing before you know it.

6th Grade

  • If you feel your son is NOT ready mentally and physically, have him attend at least one Rubio Long Snapping camp as a spectator.  See what it is all about.  I would choose a 1 Day Camp in CA, NC, GA, TX, NJ, FL, WA or IL.  This will give you a chance to meet me and understand the way I work and speak.  Listen to instruction.  Become familiar and comfortable with the camp scene. There is no charge for this.
  • If you feel your son is ready mentally and physically, contact me and we can discuss him actually participating in a Rubio Long Snapping camp. I would choose a 1 Day Camp in CA, NC, GA, TX, NJ, FL, WA or IL. The sooner they get the form down, the better they will be in the long run. Once I get their form down, we just wait for their body to develop and BOOM, you have greatness.

7th Grade

  • If mentally and physically mature enough, I will allow a 7th grader to attend my camps. The sooner they get the form down, the better they will be in the long run. Once I get their form down, we just wait for their body to develop and BOOM, you have greatness.
  • If you feel your son is NOT ready mentally and physically, have him attend at least one Rubio Long Snapping Camp as a spectator.  See what it is all about.  I would choose a 1-day Nike Camps in CA, NC, GA, TX or IL.  This will give you a chance to meet me and understand the way I work and speak.  Listen to instruction.  Become familiar and comfortable with the camp scene. There is no charge for this.
  • Start private lessons with either me or someone I recommend.  Contact me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) and I will discuss the options.
  • Buy the Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping Instructional DVD.  This is the best way to learn.  Plus, you can watch it over and over again.

8th Grade

  • This is the time to begin attending Chris Sailer Kicking Camps.  I would choose the 1 Day Camp in CA, NC, GA, TX, NJ, FL, WA or IL.  I would attend ALL 3 camps when Rubio Long Snapping comes to your region of the U.S.  We come to each of these locations 3 times per year (Fall, Winter / Spring, and Summer).
  • At this age, if mentally and physically mature enough (major bonus if they have been to my camps), they should start the Vegas Events. No one will expect anything from an 8th grader, so this should be the least stressful Vegas they will ever encounter. Once again, the sooner they go this, the better they will be in the long run.
  • Continue private and group lessons with Rubio and/or a Rubio Long Snapping private coach.  Contact me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) and I will discuss the options.
  • If invited, attend the Underclassmen “Invite Only” Event.  This camp is “Invite Only” is for the players and parents.  Learn about your future and how to handle it each step of the way.

Continue to learn about your future and how to handle it each step of the way.

11th Grade

  • Attend Rubio Long Snapping Camps.
  • Attend ALL 3 of the  1-day camps in your region (CA, NC, GA, TX or IL).  We come to each of these locations 3 times per year (Fall, Winter / Spring, and Summer).

  • Attend VEGAS EVENTS in both January & May.  This is the time to get your name on the map. College coaches will be setting up their recruit boards.  This is the time to shoot for “TOP 12″ and “Event Elite”!
  • Continue private and group lessons with Rubio and/or a Rubio Long Snapping private coach.  Contact me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) and I will discuss the options.
  • Attend Multiple College Camps within reason.  These are essentially tryouts.  Be realistic with your skill level.  Attend camps at all levels of college football (D1, D2, D3, etc.)
  • Attend the “TOP 12″ & “Event Elite” Camp.  This is an “Invite Only” Camp that brings together ONLY the best of the best.  You can only get invited by attending the VEGAS Events and proving that you are one of the best while competing again the best.  This camp is the ULTIMATE GOAL.  This is the best camp that you will ever attend, if invited.

12th Grade

  • Attend Rubio Long Snapping Camps.
  • Attend ALL 3 of the  1-day camps in your region (CA, NC, GA, TX or IL).  We come to each of these locations 3 times per year (Fall, Winter / Spring, and Summer).

  • Continue private and group lessons with Rubio and/or a Rubio Long Snapping private coach.  Contact me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) and I will discuss the options.
  • DO NOT stop working once you have decided on a college.  This is the #1 mistake made.  Work harder than ever as the next level is even more difficult. DO NOT REST ON YOUR PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS.…It will catch up with you. Trust me.

College / NFL

  • Attend the College Camp each year to stay sharp and prepare yourself for upcoming seasons and an NFL Future.
  • Rubio Long Snapping will be holding another NFL camp this coming year. Last year’s was a great success with many Long Snappers being brought into NFL camps simply for their performance at the camp! Be on the lookout!

Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping are the #1 Kicking, Punting, and Long Snapping Businesses in the World.  Feel free to ask around. We will teach and guide you from 7th Grade all through the day that you retire from the NFL.

Is Your Son Ready for a Rubio Long Snapping Camp?

“Rubio, I’m nervous my son is not ready for your camp since he is just starting out”

“Rubio, all your camps have a ton of great Long Snappers and I don’t know if my son will be able to handle it”

“Rubio, how do I know if my son is ready for your camps?”

“Rubio, what skill level is required for your camps?

There are all very common questions that I get continuously throughout the year. The answer is simple: your child is ready. Now. Yup, now.

Here is the thing…Yes, there are many great Long Snappers at my camps, but do you know how they became great, by going when they weren’t great.

For every amazing Long Snapper you see, I can EASILY show you film of them being absolutely terrible. Everyone starts from somewhere. Like I always say, no one comes out of their mother snapping a .75. It takes time, it takes good form, it takes effort, it takes working hard AND smart. It happens. It always does.

Great example is Rubio Long Snapper Taybor Pepper of Michigan St. The first video is from 8th grade where he is, let’s just say, not really great. The second is from this past summer where he is, lets just say, phenomenal. (P.S. I could show you HUNDREDS of examples like Taybor)

Bottom line, there is no time like the present to get your kid to a Rubio Long Snapping campThe sooner I see him and get him going with the proper form, the better he will be in the long run. If he goes to someone who doesn’t know what they are doing first, I have to correct all of the mistakes then start building the form to greatness.

Happy Ranksgiving to the Class of 2017 Long Snappers

The rankings are completed for ALL 2017 Long Snappers that participated in the Rubio Long Snapping CA Camp on February 23, 2014!

This class is just starting out and a couple kids are already starting to shine. It is always fun to watch the young Long Snappers and how quickly things can change in the rankings over the years.

KEY POINTS:

  • My rankings are NOT done just from the Target
  • My rankings are NOT done from some mathematical formula.
  • My rankings ARE done by me and only me.
  • My rankings are based off of this blog I wrote about what makes a Long Snapper great.
  • If you would like anything added to your profile page, simply email me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) the information and consider it done.
  • All Long Snappers are ranked after their first fall camp of their freshman year in high school.

A Long Snapper has the ability to adjust their ranking anytime I see them LIVE, not on video.

So, You Didn’t Make the Underclassmen Invite Event Cut….Now What?

As you know, Chris Sailer and I sent out the invites to the Underclassmen Invite Event in CA yesterday. Many woke up happy today, while many were left wondering what happened.

The world is not ending. If you did not get invited, you can still prove yourself to us either at the remaining spring camps (NC, GA and even CA Prep) and, more importantly, at the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas on May 4-5, 2013. Sailer and I will be choosing a couple deserving athletes from these locations.

Therefore, if you feel that you are deserving of being invited, prove it to us in either NC, GA, CA and/or VEGAS!

Confused as to what this camp really is all about? Here you go:

Underclassmen Invite Event –
Date: June 29-30, 2013

Location: Sherman Oaks Notre Dame HS, CA

Description: This two day event is the first time that Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping will be completely gearing a camps towards the athletes and their parents/guardians.  This camp is meant to not only get the athletes headed in the right direction in the beginning of their high school careers, but also the parents as well.  It will provide information regarding nutrition, social media, recruiting, film, education and, of course, on field instruction. This event is just as much for the parents/guardians as it is the athletes!

There will be formal meetings/classroom sessions on individual topics such as….

1. Training (what level is right for the underclassmen athlete, how often, proper techniques)

2. Nutrition and Lifting (Good habits, bad habits)

3. Social Media (Setting up and using the proper social media outlets – this has become a must)

4. Filming (proper angles, techniques, times, set up)

5. Education (the importance of it, standards, year by year plan)

College recruiting for Kickers, Punters and Long Snappers is finally getting where it needs to be.  Scholarships are being offered earlier and earlier each year.  Early exposure is necessary these days.  The Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping Nike Underclassmen “Invite Only” Event is the perfect opportunity to make a name for yourself and solidify your national ranking at the perfect time.  The middle of the summer is now the time college coaches build their underclassmen lists.  You want to be on that list.  This camp will get you there.  It is also your first opportunity to prove that you are a “TOP 12” candidate in your class.  The camp is set for early July for a reason, college coaches asked us to do this.  They want the inside track early.  Don’t be surprised to see more and more underclassmen offered during the season in the near future.

Camp Includes:
Instruction, Video Analysis, Recruiting Meeting, Parent Meetings, Competition, YouTube recruiting video, a Chris Sailer Kicking / Rubio Long Snapping shirt and a chance to be ranked with Chris Sailer Kicking / Rubio Long Snapping.

Who can attend:
Kickers, Punters and Long Snappers that will be entering the 9th, 10th or 11th grade. This is an INVITE ONLY EVENT. You must be invited by Chris Sailer or Chris Rubio to attend.

How do you get invited:
1: Chris Rubio evaluation that shows you have college potential and/or commitment.
2: Recommendation
3: Invitations will begin being sent out starting April 8

Adjusting to Something New

All over the country, Long Snappers are right in the mix of starting their football seasons. They are meeting new people, learning new things and possibly even living in new locations. Many are experiencing the exact same things and don’t even know it. I am going to clarify some glaring issues for all….

“My coach is not the same to me now as he was when he was recruiting me”
Well, of course he isn’t. He got what he wanted (you on the team and not playing for someone else) and you are essentially locked in. He did what he did to get you and now YOU have to prove yourself to HIM. He proved himself to you to get you there and now the rolls are reversed. He is the general and you are his soldier. You have a war coming up (season) and he is using you to do the fighting. He NEEDS to make sure you are ready on all accounts. If you are not, he looks like an idiot for recruiting and playing you. If he looks like an idiot, he gets fired and doesn’t get paid. You are with the big boys now and the stakes are higher. Deal with it.

“The other players are treating me like crap because I am a Long Snapper”
This is standard. You know how many of them think what you do is stupid and anyone can do it? You know how many of them are upset you took a scholarship from either a buddy of theirs or even them personally? You know how many of them can’t stand the fact that you get as much stuff (scholarship, gear, etc) as them, yet don’t have to go through the same type of practice as them? Hint: The answer to all is almost 100% of them.

You need to be yourself and take pride in what you do. Don’t act like just a long snapper, you need to act like THE Long Snapper. Take pride in your job. Don’t look down on it. Don’t publicize it too much (they won’t embrace right off the bat) but let them know (by action) that you take a sincere amount of pride in your job (extra drills, always perfecting your craft). This will pay off once they grasp the concept that you aren’t robbing the system, are actually very beneficial to the team and they won’t be able to win without you.
“I am not ready for the speed at this level!”
Very few are right off the bat. It takes time, you just have to be on a strict learning curve. Think about it this way: often, a team will bring in a top notch quarterback, has that quarterback been absolutely flawless? I am betting he has not. Everyone needs some time to adjust and you will as well. The trick is to putting in some extra work the right way (drills, film, meetings with coaches) to ensure that you are learning to deal with the speed at a quicker pace than others. Being overwhelmed is acceptable at the start . Being overwhelmed and not doing a thing about is not.

“I am having a tough time dealing being away from home and making new friends”
It is time to put on your big boy pants. As I stated in my last blog, if you are obsessing about the past, you can’t live in the present and make your future. It is wonderful to have a ton of friends back home and, with the onslaught of social media, it is easier than ever to remain in contact with them. But, now that you have moved on, and hopefully they have as well, it is time to spread your wings and meet new friends. Welcome to the real world and learning to associate with people outside of your comfort zone. Meet new people, learn new things, embrace differences. A couple of my greatest friends in college were not football players and it was definitely a nice change of pace. Once school starts, the possibilities are endless for meeting new people. Try to jump out of your normal routine to find new folks and see what they are all about. You might just be surprised. Remember, it is not what you know, but who you know and how well you know them:)

I am going to end this blog with some words I took, by permission, from the first Long Snapper I have trained. His name is Casey Hales and he played at Duke back in the day. He looks nothing like a Long Snapper (think surfer that has been sleeping on the beach for a solid decade) but holds the record for most starts at Duke and is an absolutely terrific person. Here is what he had to say about the above statement:

As a freshman in college it’s easy to get frustrated when you’re finding your way in a new environment.Being away from home, in a new state or even across the country can be/is overwhelming at times. You don’t know anyone, you’re doing your best to get around campus, and from time to time you get lost.In this situation it is easy to look back at the comfort and familiarity of your hometown HS relationships and feel even more uncomfortable with the transition to making new friends in College. This is completely natural, but can be a slippery slope if it prohibits you from branching out.
Adapting to college culture right out of high school is a process. Right out the gates you are holding on to what you know: your home life, HS friends and “remembering what that was like.”As you begin to get settled in and embrace college, you start to slowly let go of the times and experiences from HS to make room for new ones in College. This brings up two important topics to keep in mind: Attachment and Detachment. You will always have your friends from HS, but it’s crucial to make sure you’re not too attached to them, it can consume your energy by dwelling on missing those relationships. It is common to feel the bond of attachment to home and all that is dear to you, but keep in mind the the stages of human development. We must be free and able to detach and search for new friends and experiences. Change is happening all the time all around you, and you need to flow with it. The big key here is to be aware of these feelings, and recognize when you are too attached to something or someone that is preventing you from living an independent lifestyle. In this case, a need to detach yourself from the past to embrace the present i.e. College and everything that awaits you.Don’t sit on the sidelines, there are no spectators here, College is about participating and taking advantage of new opportunities. You will be amazed at what learn about yourself during this time.

I spoke with Casey about this topic last week and wanted to use him as an example. Not because he speaks so well and just dominated college life, but just the opposite and this is something very few people in the world know about him. In the second semester of Casey’s second year in college, he came into my home with his mother and told me he was done with football and school at Duke. He was going to transfer and knew exactly how he was going to do it. He couldn’t handle being away and was having a very rough time adjusting to college life and football.

He and I basically had it out right then and there in my home. We went back and forth with me explaining to him exactly what he was about to throw away (free education and new experiences in lieu of paying for education and experiences he already had). He listened and listened well. He decided to stay at Duke and ended not coming back on his allotted time (spring break, summer, etc) because he was having such a good time out there once he learned to accept and embrace it. He dove head first into college and experienced every single thing it had to offer him.

Never ever forget……
You make your life. Good or bad, you are in control of it. You make it what it is and what it will be.
