Recap of the NC Spring Camp (3/12/17)

Rubio Long Snapping traveled to NC on March 12th, 2017 for their spring camp. Rubio Long Snapping will be traveling the country this spring instructing Long Snappers and getting them all ready for the 2nd biggest event of the year (the largest is our January Vegas Event), VEGAS 30!

The next stop for Rubio Long Snapping will be Seattle on March 19th, Texas on March 26th, Arizona and New Jersey on April 9th, April 23 in Illinois and April 30th in Georgia.

This was the second Rubio Long Snapping regional camp that featured the RSI Testing to track a Long Snappers progress throughout the year and it was an overwhelming success. You can find out more about this new format HERE and the RSI’s from this actual camp already posted HERE

Long Snappers from TN, NC, NY, PA, GA, OH, SC, FL, VA, MO, IN, MA & NJ all traveled to get the best instruction and the most exposure possible for Long Snapping.

Drew Little

The overall camp champion was Drew Little (NC, ’19). Little was the first Long Snapper chosen to the TOP 12 Camp at VEGAS XXIX and he hasn’t let up one bit since that weekend. He is a very consistent Long Snapper with great form, quick hands and handles pressure extremely well. His victory earned him a free admission to VEGAS 30 on May 13-14!

You can see the full finals below….

TOP 2017 LONG SNAPPERS

Mitch Hall

Mitch Hall did really well and was snapping an extremely consistent ball. Each snap, one after the other, looked exactly the same. Accuracy is on point and Louisville got a good one in Mitch.

Austin Reeves was an absolute machine out in NC. Ball is tight, he looked confident and his form is darn near perfect. Great kid and Long Snapper.

Cooper Short had his best day as a Rubio Long Snapper. The new Presbyterian commit was on fire snapping with good speed and great power throughout the day. You can tell Cooper has been working!

Ryan Culbertson was his usual consistent and accurate self. He is like a pitching machine with each snap being the same over and over again.

Erik Lawson is a large man with great power. Ball came humming off his fingers and was one of the fastest Long Snappers in attendance.

Notables: Ben Shirley

TOP 2018 LONG SNAPPERS

Oscar Shadley

Oscar Shadley left no doubt he is the best Long Snapper in the country. His ball is quick and powerful while his form has no wasted movement. Kid is a true athlete and will be an easy choice for a college to scholarship.

Jack Hadley had an incredible day and was snapping with raw power in NC. He is a large man, has good form and listens well. When he is on, he is EASILY one of the best in the country.

Maddie Golden was snapping fast pearls all day. His snaps were humming and I even caught him a couple times in the .6s. Form is excellent and he snaps well under pressure.

Noah Turner is thick, strong and snaps a good ball. Always improving and he has the size to stop a defender.

The Ortiz Brothers

Antonio Ortiz was a newcomer that left no doubt he could, easily, be one of the top Long Snappers in the country. Made it all the way to the finals on his first camp and might have the most potential of anyone in the country besides his bother (see below).

Marco Ortiz was one of the most dominant newcomers I have come across in about ten years. The potential on Marco and Antonio is so off the charts, it is unbelievable. They are big, the can run and they are very smooth. The sky is the limit for these two.

Kent Vines was smooth, accurate and has very good size. Flat out solid Long Snapper. Keep a very close eye on him at VEGAS 30.

Michael Vojvodich was very solid all day in NC. He has great size, he can move on his feet and he is consistent with his speed. Great upside on Michael.

Trey Gable had a great day in NC and was impressive with his snaps. I LOVE his attitude and the kid can move on his feet.

Max Durschlag was snapping some heat in NC and made it quite clear he could earn a TOP 12 Camp spot at VEGAS 30.

Matt Aloni showed me some good things throughout the day. Very accurate and consistent Long Snapper.

Brock Assel is large, snaps a great ball and is consistent. Some more speed on the ball and his feet will be huge for him come VEGAS 30!

Notables: Hunter Becker, Zach Chamblee, Bailey Williams, Collin Springer, Reed Harper, Marshall Eury, Sam DeLuke,

TOP 2019 LONG SNAPPERS

Christian Johnstone

Christian Johnstone did well all day long in NC. He has great size, he can move on his feet and shows solid speed on the ball. Locking down his snaps under high pressure situations will make him an EASY pick for a TOP 12 Camp spot at VEGAS 30

Alex Harper was very consistent and accurate throughout the day. Listens well and has good upside.

Tripp Heath was snapping a powerful ball throughout the day and had some quick hands.

Notables: Graham Finklea, Garrett Karres, Luke Payne, Grayson Owens

TOP 2020 LONG SNAPPERS AND BEYOND…

Ryan Purcell

Ryan Purcell did really well in NC. He has very quick hands and can already snap in the .80s, which is solid for his age. Very accurate and consistent Long Snapper.

Will Albright was very good all day in NC. Snaps a nice ball that can hit in the .8s with his quick hands.

Ethan Roberts showed solid consistency throughout the day in NC.

Stewart Jones is a 2021 Long Snapper that was impressive with his handling of pressure.

Austin Turner is a 2021 Long Snapper that has great form for his age and has some solid zip on the ball.

Notables: Carson Keaton, Will Mitchell, Ty Nicholas, Will Barton

KEY POINTS:
* My rankings are NOT done just from The Rubio Target and will always be announced when they are completed on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.)
* My rankings are NOT done from some mathematical formula.
* My rankings ARE done by me and my several select members of my senior staff. That is why they take a good amount of time. (Think of it this way, it takes MONTHS to build a Rolls Royce but only hours to build an average car)
* My rankings are based off of THIS blog I wrote about what makes a Long Snapper great.
* If you would like anything added to your profile page, simply email me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) the information and consider it done.
* All Long Snappers are ranked after their first fall camp of their freshman year in high school.

A Long Snapper has the ability to adjust their ranking anytime I see them LIVE, not on video.

Starting this spring, all Rubio Long Snapping camps will feature a shortened version of the VEGAS testing format. Once the Long Snapper has completed the test, they earn an RSI which is the fairest and most accurate way to judge a Long Snapper by numbers. Once you register, for a Rubio Long Snapping camp, a full, detailed explanation will be in your confirmation email.
Each Long Snapper will now be tested on The Rubio Long Snapping Target with one snap per section instead of three. Meaning, you get one regular snap, one block left, one block right, and one speed for both punt snaps and short snaps to total eight snaps. Therefore, at the end of testing, the RSI will be tripled to reveal the participants’ RSI for that particular camp. Trust me, I do get that a Regional Camp RSI will not be the exact same as a VEGAS Event RSI for several reasons (length of test, pressure of Vegas, etc.) but it will pretty darn close and definitely fair.
The RSI is an excellent way for a participant to truly show how good of a Long Snapper they are as it balances the accuracy along with the speed of the ball, plus it will show how well the Long Snapper grows through each and every Rubio Long Snapping camp. Also, the RSI‘s will be posted on each Long Snappers profile after every camp they attend. Please note: the RSI does not account for athleticism, spiral or mentality.
RSI‘s can range from zero to basically 80 (if a Long Snapper was to get a score 48 points and averaged .65 on their punt snaps). I believe the highest I have ever encountered a 60.61 by Kasey Kelleher at VEGAS XXIX. The 12 finalists at VEGAS XXIX all had above 50’s on their RSI and that was a record. A 30 is usually pretty darn solid.
Please Note: The RSI is not completely how your Rubio Long Snapping ranking will be calculated as there are many factors to being a great Long Snapper. The main things that each Long Snapper will be ranked on are the following:
-Speed (should be less than .75 for a 15 yard punt snap)
-Accuracy (all snaps should be in The Rubio Zone)
-Consistency (a college coach is going to want to see how consistent you are with your speed…if you can snap a .75, your snaps should be right around there, well, consistently)
-Mentality (how well do you handle pressure)
-Athleticism (do you move well or does it look like you are in pain when moving)
-Size (an ideal Long Snapper would be about 6’3″ and 235)
-Spiral (does the ball look pretty, slice through the wind and easy to catch)
-Blocking (will you be able to withstand a major college rush) If you have ever been to a Rubio Long Snapping Vegas Event, you know that one of the main parts of competition day is when each Long Snapper gets tested on The Rubio Long Snapping Target.
