College Camp

Every year, Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping hold a college camp for all the kickers, punters and Long Snappers that are currently playing in college and/or headed to play in college. This summer, we simply could not find a suitable time to run one SO we are coming up with this plan….

any kicker, punter and/or Long Snapper that is currently in college and/or headed to college can come to any of our personal camps (IL, GA, NC, TX, CA, Underclassmen Invite Event) for free to learn and assist with younger specialists. This is a great way to knock off the rust, get ready for the season and inspire the next generation. You will get all of the instruction throughout the day, but simply won’t be able to partake in the competitions. Plus, it will require less travel, this summer, for the college athletes.

We will definitely try to create a block of time next summer for the College Camp but, until then, just contact Chris Sailer or myself prior to the camp and consider it done.

Recap Article and Video of the 12th Annual Spring Event in Las Vegas

Long Snappers came out on May 10-11 to attend the Rubio Long Snapping Camp in Las Vegas from from over half of the USA to get the best  Long Snapping instruction and exposure in the country for Long Snappers. Long Snappers, and their parents/guardians, were instructed on the field on Satuday with competition on Sunday. Each Long Snapper was filmed and will have a player profile provided for them on RubioLongSnapping.com.

The overall winner of the camp was Jordan Ober (NV, ’15). Ober was exceptional all weekend in Vegas. The hometown hero snapped a great, accurate ball throughout the two days. He is snapping with confidence and dips into the D1 range. Incredible accuracy and has been improving a great amount in a very short amount of time. Excellent attitude.

The 12 Long Snappers that made the finals round on Sunday due to their exceptional RSI (Rubio Standard Index – score divided by speed with bonus points for more speed) were….Jordan Ober, AJ Carty, George Madden, Grant Gluhaich, Jake Knight, Tommy Bancroft, Liam McCullough, John Aloma, Harrison Goebel, Darren Diffee, Logan Hamilton & Michael Poujol. All were great but Ober just outlasted them all.

TOP 2014/JC Long Snappers (to see any profiles, simply go to RubioLongSnapping.com under Player Rankings)….

  • Wesley Bertoni looked exceptional all weekend. Body is strong and his form is perfect. AMAZING improvement in the last year
  • Cody Block did extremely well over the weekend in Vegas. He is transfer from Nevada and looks to being easily able to snap at the next level. The harder he snaps, the better he does.
  • Nick Avantino was snapping hard all weekend and moves well on his feet. Great attitude.
  • Elijah Richardson was throwing heat in Vegas and is built very well. Strong Long Snapper with a ton of upside.
  • Bobby Daggett looked poised and confident. Coming along very nicely.
  • Nathan Lucas looked very smooth and accurate all weekend in Vegas.

TOP 2015 Long Snappers (to see any profiles, simply go to RubioLongSnapping.com under Player Rankings)…

  • Blake Ferguson continues to dominate the art of Long Snapping. He looks like a full grown man and is snapping like one as well. Ball is very smooth, accurate and fast. Said it once and I will say it again, LSU got lucky grabbing him early.
  • Liam McCullough made it into the finals against Ober and could have easily taken the title. Kid is massive and snaps a nice ball that jumps out at you. Four scholarships and counting…and all well deserved.
  • Garrett Wilson  has been putting on some very good weight and that has helped him snapping immensely. Kid is on fire and was performing so well, I invited him to the Event Elite, right on the spot.
  • Ryan Simmons is another Long Snapper that was so impressive that he was selected to Event Elite right on the spot. Great accuracy and was snapping hard all weekend.
  • AJ Carty was ripping the ball back to the punter and snapping the ball with a ton of confidence.
  • Grant Gluhaich was ON FIRE all weekend in Vegas. Kid can snap as anyone in the country…easily. The bigger he gets, the better he will be.
  • Wes Farnsworth is as athletic a Long Snapper as you could ever hope for in life. Kid flies like the wind and rips the ball back to the punter.
  • George Madden is built like a college linebacker and snaps like a college Long Snapper.
  • Nick Cox performed very well and was excellent for his first Rubio Long Snapping camp.
  • Michael Poujol might have the most upside of any Long Snapper in the country.

Other notable 2015 Long Snappers…Tommy Bancroft, Marco Cadavieco, Peter Comaroto, Darren Diffee, Ryan Farr, Matt Foley, Harrison Goebel, Caleb Hendrix, Logan Hamilton, Matt Keller, Jake Knight, Brendan Lowery, Chris Lutzel,  Chaska Moon, Ryan Parris, Hayden Sak, Chase Urbach, Richard Wilcox and Hunter Womac.

Top 2016 Long Snappers  (to see any profiles, simply go to RubioLongSnapping.com under Player Rankings)…

  • John Shannon, yet again, separated himself as a man amongst boys with his overall ability at the Vegas Event. He easily snaps at the D1 level right now and looks ripe to get a scholarship soon.
  • John Aloma was the only sophomore to make it to the finals round and it was well deserved. He came to Vegas with a strong mindset and really dominated from start to finish.
  • Harrison Freeman is a massive man with the most potential in his class. Kid could jump and take the top spot soon.
  • Johnny Den Bleyker could be the most athletic Long Snapper in his class. Tons of talent on this Long Snapper.
  • Connor Kirkegaard was excellent all weekend in Vegas. He is starting to snap with a lot of confidence. The more consistent he gets, the better he will be.
  • Donald Reiter was really solid in Vegas. Large man that is strong and does a great job on his spiral. Love his attitude.

Other notable 2016 Long Snappers…Geron Eatherly, Damon Johnson, Jake Munoz, Anthony Ratliff, Koby Walsh and Steven Wirtel.

Top 2017/2018 Long Snappers  (to see any profiles, simply go to RubioLongSnapping.com under Player Rankings)….

  • Mitch Hall looked great, as always, out in Vegas. It is like he is older and snapping with youngsters. Very good form and attitude.
  • Shiloh Mast has a wonderful attitude and just rips the ball back to the punter. Very impressive pop for his age.
  • Thomas Fletcher is coming along very nicely with solid form and a laid back attitude. All the tools to be a great one. Size will be next hurdle for him.
  • Nate Durham is gaining confidence and he is snapping well. Watch him

Other notable 2017/2018 Long Snappers: Joe Calcagno, Javier King, Caleb Lawver, Dan Cantrell, Colin Scott and Enzo Anthony.

Questions a Preferred Walk-On Should Ask

As you know from THIS blog, a Long Snapper is recruited either as a full scholarship athlete, a preferred walk-on or just a walk on. They are all very different.

A long time Rubio Long Snapping parent, Mike Frese (older son, Nolan,  is starting on scholarship at the University of Houston, after being a preferred walk-on and his younger son, Jordan, will be a preferred walk-on at Texas A&M this fall) sent me some questions that his sons used during the recruiting process and asked me if I would like to share them with other parents and Long Snappers. They are great, so I am and I will even give some insight on each.

1. Who is on the roster that snaps (besides starter ________) Do any position players snap? What year are they, are they on scholarship? Is ________ on scholarship? This is a great starter question as it shows you are serious and want to know who your competition is. If other position players do snap, watch them and see how much they actually do. If they RARELY do it, don’t worry as they won’t be ready.

2. Will I be on the 105?  The 105 (you should know this if you read the other blog that I already linked to!) is the number of athletes they can bring in the first wave (think the first day of Hell Week). If you are on this, that is a very good sign. If you are not, might be a code red.

3. How many LS make travel team? They will usually take two. If they have someone that can get the ball back there that plays another position, they may only take one as this guy can fill in if all hell breaks loose during a game. (Head’s Up to Coaches – THIS PLAN DOESN’T WORK!)

4. If I’m on 2 deep but not starting (redshirt) would I still travel? See answer to #3

5. Are you recruiting any other  LS for this year? They may or may not be honest with you on this one. Odds are they will take two preferred walk-ons and let you battle for the spot. Why not? It would be like having two hot, girls who are paying for the date fight to see who gets you. Win, win.

6. Will the program assist in my application & enrollment? This should be a definite YES! If it is not, they most likely aren’t too into you.

7. Housing? Food? Parking? What will it cost my parents? Any differences between for walk-ons from scholarship players? A scholarship player shouldn’t have to pay a thing while the preferred walk-on will have to cover it all. What you are essentially asking in this question is, as a preferred walk-on, would you be able to pay to eat with the team at training table, live with the team in the same dorms and get the same parking as the athletes on full scholarship.

8. How soon can I be on scholarship when I earn starting job? (Best & worst case scenarios) Best, right away and this is why you will start to hear the term “NON-RECRUITED WALK-ON.” If you hear this, it means they want to be able to put on scholarship ASAP once you start (think within days) while if you are a “RECRUITED WALK-ON” you will most likely have to wait until next quarter, semester or school year. Usually, if you start the whole season, you get it right after and if you are coming in after the starter graduates in the fall, they will usually run you through the gauntlet in Spring Ball to see if you can handle the pressure and deserve it.

9. When do u need me to decide/commit? When I decide, what are the next steps in the process? This should be your basic stuff….stop taking trips to schools, be proud of your commitment, get ready to start working hard (they will usually send you workout plan)

10. When are spring practices? Can I come watch one? If they say no, they don’t like you…AT ALL.

11. When will summer school start (summer workouts). Do you want me then? You want them to say yes and you should definitely go. It will show you are dedicated and determined.

Hope this helps and feel free to comment below if you have any other questions.

12th Annual Spring Event Info

The 12th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas, NV run by Rubio Long Snapping is a little over a month away.  While many Long Snappers are taking this time of year off, those that seriously want to play in college and know what it takes are working harder and smarter than ever.  Those dedicated Long Snappers will be in Las Vegas on May 10-11, 2014 ready to impress and gain the most valuable national exposure in the nation.

Here is some useful information for those attending and those that are still considering attending…

  • It is open to all. This NOT an invite only camp. This camp offers a great experience to kickers, punters, and long snappers of all levels.  Expect a wide range of talent from beginners to the best of the best from around the world in the Classes of 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, Junior Colleges and 4-Year Transfer Students.  The best of the best, The “Event Elite”, selected from the Spring Event will be invited to attend the “TOP 12″ and “Event Elite” Camp in June. To attend, just email Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com
  • Event Date: May 10-11, 2014
  • Arrive Friday May 9th.  The earlier that you arrive, the more well rested you will be for the weekend.
  • Plan on being at camp until 5PM Sunday May 11th.  There is no way of knowing if you will make the Finals Round Sunday until you and all other participants have completed the initial round of charting Sunday morning.  Whether you make the Finals Round or not, you should plan on staying on watching the Finals Round.  Get the full experience from the camp!
  • Friday Small Group Sessions (3:00 – 4:00 & 4:00 – 5:00) are OPTIONAL.  These were designed to knock some rust off, get rid of jet lag legs, and gain confidence heading into Saturday.  If you can make it, I highly recommend you attend. To register, just email Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com.
  • Location: Las Vegas Outdoor Soccer 1400 N. Rampart Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89128
  • There is no bleacher seating.  Bring chairs or buy some cheap chairs if you would like to sit while you watch.

Why May? May is also known as “Evaluation Period” for college coaches.  This is a very HOT time for recruiting for all classes.  May offers maximum exposure.  Chris Sailer and myself will be handing 100′s of calls after this event.  Recruiting Boards will be set based on results and our evaluations.  Want to be offered a scholarship at those college camps this summer?  Attending this camp is how they will know about you!

  • The 12th Annual National Snapping Spring Event gives you a chance to make the “Event Elite”.  There is NO set number of specialists that will be selected.  The number selected is based on the number of participants that can compete at that VERY HIGHEST LEVEL.  They will be selected to join the “TOP 12″ at the most prestigious Invite Only Camp in the world…The TOP 12 & EVENT ELITE CAMP.
  • Think you are good enough to make the “Event Elite” well now is the chance to prove it.
  • It is no surprise that from the 12th Annual National Snapping Event in January that the “TOP 12″ are already getting major attention and full scholarship offers.  Who will be next?
  • The Spring Event in NOT an Invite Only Camp.
  • Come prepared to enjoy your experience.  Do NOT put to much pressure on yourself.  Come with open eyes and ears.  Learn from your instructors and your peers.  Look around and take it all in.  Watch other groups.  Watch the college and pro demo.  Attend the Meetings.  There are so many things to learn and that you can and will benefit from if you take advantage.  Leave the camp with goals and a motivation to work harder than ever!

SCHEDULE

  • Saturday – Instructional Day.  You will get plenty of reps.  Pace yourself.  There will be a lot of live snapping. Your group numbers will be emailed to you about a week prior to camp.
  • Sunday – Competition Day.  You will be charted.  You will be filmed. You will be tested. You will be timed.  Your competition start time will be assigned to you at Check-In Saturday.
  • Saturday Meetings are the the Group Rate Hotel – JW Marriott.  I highly advise that participants and their parents attend.  Get there early and enjoy. To book your hotel room.  CLICK HERE

The Aaron Golub Story

As you saw several days ago, Rubio Long Snapper Aaron Golub (MA, ’14) committed to Tulane as a preferred walk-on. You might have saw the post on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook and thought “just another one of Rubio’s guys that is going to college, no big deal.” You would have been wrong, beyond extremely wrong.

What you most likely don’t know is that Aaron has NO vision in his right eye and very limited vision in his left. He is legally blind.

He is legally blind and he is headed to college to play football!

Golub started with Rubio Long Snapping in July of 2012. I was contacted prior to the camp by his father, Bob, and was told of the situation. I said it would not be a problem, I would always have someone catch the ball for him and, if he so desired, even he could come out and be right next to Golub if he so desired.

The first camp for Aaron was not the finest showing I have ever seen from a first timer. Ok, I am being nice….he was bad, real bad. (please view below)

But, the best part about Aaron, and his father, was that they were both like sponges. They soaked every single thing I said up and were planning on putting it to good use. They obviously did and did it well. They even came to camp with a pair of modified glasses/goggles that Aaron carries with him to show people exactly how normally sees. It is amazing . For reference, close one eye and then make a fist with a hole that size of a dime and put the opening to your eye…that is Aaron’s continuous view.

Aaron never got frustrated and never gave up. He shot me text after text, clip after clip, asking which stance looked better, how his form was coming along, what else did he need to work on. The good had drive and wouldn’t stop until he reached his goal and, most likely, silenced the countless people that told him he wouldn’t be able to do what he wanted because of his “disability.”

They were all proven wrong and he was right. (please view below)

This journey is not over for Aaron and he still has a lot to prove and I know he can do it. Huge embrace to Aaron as he has turned himself into a D1 Rubio Long Snapper in less than two years. I am very impressed with and proud of him.

So, you still have an excuse why you can’t do it?

This class is looking to be one of the deepest I have had in quite some time. These rankings took me a LONG time and a lot went into them. This class is full of just absolute studs and anyone can take the top spot by May Vegas!

KEY POINTS:

  • My rankings are NOT done just from the Target
  • My rankings are NOT done from some mathematical formula.
  • My rankings ARE done by me and only me. That is why I am at all my camps.
  • My rankings are based off of this blog I wrote about what makes a Long Snapper great.
  • If you would like anything added to your profile page, simply email me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) the information and consider it done.
  • All Long Snappers are ranked after their first fall camp of their freshman year in high school.

A Long Snapper has the ability to adjust their ranking anytime I see them LIVE, not on video.

Rubio Long Snapping Tip: How to Snap in the Rain

After about 50 inquiries, all revolving around possible rainy games this weekend, I thought it was time I just made it public for everyone.

Here is how you snap in the rain….

1. A rainy game usually means the referee will have a towel with him to try and keep the ball dry. If he doesn’t have one, be a pal and make sure he does AND continue to ensure he always has a dry towel throughout the game.

2. When you go into punt and/or pat, get up to the line and get your feet set IMMEDIATELY.

3. Then, AS SOON AS THE REFEREE PUTS THE BALL DOWN, grab it with your dominant hand. Getting a solid grip with your dominant hand will be key to snapping a wet ball.

4. The next step is simply making sure you keep your form stays the exact same. The weather should not, and will not, impact your form. The snapping motion should be, and will be, the same.

5. The final aspect of the snap is key…MAKE SURE you follow through and I mean really follow through. Pretend you are handing the ball to the punter. Yes, you need to block and/or get down field, but your MOST IMPORTANT job in a rainy game, or not a rainy game for that matter, is to SNAP THE BALL! Remember, you are a Long Snapper….not a long blocker and not a long runner. Your main job is to snap the ball…perfectly.

6. Have fun in the rain men! Make me proud and I will see you in the fall and in Vegas!!!
