Where Are They Now? Rubio Long Snapper Tyler Schmitt

For the next installment of “Where Are They Now?” we venture to the back of a camera lens to hear from Rubio Long Snapper Tyler Schmitt. Tyler was a tremendous athlete in high school, dominated at SDSU and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 6th Round (Go Hawks!)

Check out what has been going on with Rubio Long Snapper Tyler Schmitt….

1.  What is your current occupation?  11142232_711004645674731_59132459_n

Professional Landscape Photographer

2. Where do you live?

La Jolla , CA half of the year, exploring the globe the other half.

3. Married/ Kids? Single. No kids

4. What is your fondest memory of your time playing college football?

My fondest memory of playing football is running out of the tunnel at The Big House (Michigan) in front of 110,000 people as a 18 year old freshman. I’ve never been more terrified/excited to play in a game.

5. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snappers, what would it be?

Train with the linebackers, lift with the lineman, run with the defensive backs. Don’t train like a specialist, you will not grow to your full potential. Be an athlete! Practice mind control, tell yourself you are the best long snapper in the world and that is what you will become.

6. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snapping PARENTS, what would it be?

Support your son’s dreams, whatever they may be. They have been put in his heart for a reason. If that means being a long snapper then great, if that means taking a break from football to pursue another deep rooted dream then so be it. I see a lot of parents these days forcing their own childhood dreams on their kids, this works in the opposite way as they would like it too. Thank you in advance for supporting your sons desire to be the best long snapper he can be.

7. When was the last time you snapped a ball and for what reason? Schmitt_Tyler

A few months ago giving a private lesson. Partially to show the young gentleman an example of what I was talking about, but mostly to make sure I still had it in me. 😉

 8.   If you could go back and play football in college again, would you go to the same school or a different one? Why?

I wouldn’t change my college experience for the world. Being a long snapper at San Diego State is truly one of the best jobs on planet earth. We have quite a nice streak of Rubio long snappers continuing on to the NFL, and we plan on extending it next year.

 9. Any regrets during college? Something you wish you had done or maybe hadn’t?

I have no regrets during my college football career. I do wish however I would have taken care of my body and mind better. Clean eating is such an important role in maintaining a healthy career. I learned this late in my career during my short time in the NFL. Athletes spend years tearing down their body with weightlifting and practice, but rarely learn how to build back up their body (through massage, stretching, yoga, meditation) until they learn from NFL veterans.

10.   What tremendous thing have you been a part of or experienced since you graduated?

Since I graduated college I have had the opportunity to be drafted in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks.  More importantly I am now pursuing a dream of sharing my photography with the world. You can check out my work at Instagram – @tyschmitt or www.tyschmitt.com (VERY WORTH CHECKING OUT!)

VEGAS EVENT - 2014VEGAS EVENTS

As you know, the Vegas Events are the biggest and best Long Snapping camps in the world. They are truly a national event to see how you compete against the best in the nation, and world. The May Event, or VEGAS XXVI, is the second largest Long Snapping camp we run (VEGAS XXV in January is the biggest). The main difference is the weather and there are less seniors since many have already stepped onto their college campuses for their next stage of their life.

The Vegas Events are NOT an invite only camp. They are first come, first served. Long Snappers ranging from 8th grade – JC are allowed to attend.

This is the SUPER BOWL for Long Snappers. No other kicking event comes close to the exposure offered by the National Snapping Events. Rubio Long Snapping is, by far, the most credible recruiting source for Long Snappers in the country. The “TOP 12” and “EVENT ELITE” is the list to be on if you are seeking national exposure. From the Vegas Events, the Rubio Long Snapping Staff will select the “TOP 12” Seniors/JC & the “TOP 12” Underclassman (January) and “Event Elite” (May). Over 90% of the “TOP 12” have received full ride D1A scholarships in the past. Over 99% members of the “TOP 12” have gone on to play college football. In addition the “TOP 12” Underclassman will be invited to attend an exclusive summer camp to train and compete amongst that elite group.  The Competition Finals Round Winners (FG, Punt, and LS) will receive FREE Rubio Long Snapping Camps for 1 FULL YEAR. TOP GUN groupFBU CAMPS

For the second year in a row, Rubio Long Snapping and Chris Sailer Kicking will be teaming up with FBU to run their specialists portions of their camps. FBU is the world’s largest football training service and has hired us to handle their Long Snapping section. It is an honor and we are proud to do it again. It is a top notch organization that benefits countless athletes across the country.

This year, Rubio Long Snapping will be running more camps in order to hit more areas around the country. To be able to do this, I will only be at certain locations. The locations in italics are camps that I will personally be at this spring and summer. Those not in italics, will have two senior Rubio Long Snapping instructors in attendance (staff members that have been with me for well over 30 camps). They will follow the same format as myself and report directly to FBU and yours truly.

We will be choosing the two Long Snappers that will participate in the US ARMY ALL-AMERICAN BOWL at the FBU TOP GUN CAMP in Ohio on July 16-18. Chris Sailer Kicking will also be selecting the East Bay Youth All-American for the Class of 2019 (Freshman All-American Bowl) and 2020 (8th Grade All-American Bowl) at the FBU TOP GUN CAMP in Ohio on July 16-18. You MUST be invited to the TOP GUN camp by performing well at one of the regional camps prior to the TOP GUN Camp. Bottom line, you will have to do well at one of the camps, that the Chris Sailer Kicking staff  is in attendance at, to pick up an invite from myself and/or one of my senior instructors.

You will need a code to register for an FBU camp, and since you are a Rubio Long Snapper, you will have it right now: CR15. Use this code to register now for an FBU camp as they will sell out.

Christian YountNFL FREE AGENT CAMP

  • March 3, CA

You (the specialists) asked for it, you got it. They (NFL coaches) asked for it, they got it. As you know, Chris Sailer and myself have always run the biggest and best exposure camps for high school Long Snappers and kickers. Now it is time for us to move completely into the NFL realm to give the needed exposure to our college athletes.

Chris Sailer and myself have been asked COUNTLESS times to run a free agent camp since it is something that has been lacking for quite some time in the world of specialists. It is now time. This one day camp will be a showcase for NFL coaches. There will be little coaching (you shouldn’t need a ton if you are at this camp) as this camp will all be about exposure. NFL coaches and personnel will be on hand to personally see the Long Snappers in action.

In order to attend this camp, you must be out of college and be eligible for the NFL draft.

You can register for the NFL Free Agent camp HERE (spots will be limited)

Rubio, Saban and SailerCOLLEGE CAMPS

TOP 12 & EVENT ELITE CAMP

This camp is open ONLY to those invited personally by Chris Rubio. You are chosen to attend this camp by performing extremely well at either the January or May National Snapping Events in Las Vegas. Do NOT sign up for this camp unless you have been formally invited by  Rubio. Former “TOP 12” and “EVENT ELITE” members includes countless college and NFL players, All-Americans, NFL Pro Bowlers and Super Bowl participants.

Top 12 and Event Elite - 2014Some Long Snapping “TOP 12” Alumni: Christian Yount (Cleveland Browns), Justin Drescher (New Orleans Saints), Aaron Brewer (Denver Broncos), Jon Weeks (Houston Texans) to name a few.

The “TOP 12” is chosen after the January Event (VEGAS XXV) and the “EVENT ELITE” is chosen after the spring Event (VEGAS XXVI). There are obviously 12 chosen for the “TOP 12” and there is no set number for the “EVENT ELITE”. Those that deserve it and are top of their class in May, get chosen…it could be one, it could be 20.

The success rate of those we have been selected in the past that go on to play college football (most on scholarship) is over 95%.

Invites go out after each Vegas Event.

Underclassmen Invite Event - 2014UNDERCLASSMEN INVITE EVENT

You will almost think of this Event as a baby TOP 12 & EVENT ELITE Camp. This two day event is a camp that Rubio Long Snapping will be completely gearing towards the athletes and their parents/guardians. This camp is meant to not only get the athletes headed in the right direction in the beginning of their high school careers, but also the parents as well. It will provide information regarding nutrition, social media, recruiting, film, education and, of course, on field instruction. This event is just as much for the parents/guardians as it is the athletes!

College recruiting for Long Snappers is finally getting where it needs to be. Scholarships are being offered earlier and earlier each year. Early exposure is necessary these days. The Rubio Long Snapping Underclassmen “Invite Only” Event is the perfect opportunity to make a name for yourself and solidify your national ranking at the perfect time. The middle of the summer is now the time college coaches build their underclassmen lists. You want to be on that list. This camp will get you there. It is also your first opportunity to prove that you are a “TOP 12” candidate in your class. The camp is set for early July for a reason, college coaches asked us to do this. They want the inside track early. Don’t be surprised to see more and more underclassmen offered during the season in the near future.

There will be formal meetings/classroom sessions on individual topics such as: Training (what level is right for the underclassmen athlete, how often, proper techniques), Nutrition and Lifting (Good habits, bad habits), Social Media (Setting up and using the proper social media outlets – this has become a must), Filming (proper angles, techniques, times, set up), Education (the importance of it, standards, year by year plan)

Invites go out in May.

What is the Best Post Camp Diet?

If you are attending a Rubio Long Snapping Camp, you want to have some tips on what type of diet can help you refuel for your next workout. Here are some fundamental things to keep in mind.

  • Hydration is a key component in pre-camp preparation, during camp, and your after camp diet. Restoring your fluid levels is critical after camp.
  • Part of the effects of dehydration is loss of sodium. You will need to replace sodium lost during camp.
  • You should drink about 150% of your total weight lost during camp to rehydrate properly.
  • Most athletes find it easier to drink fluids that eat during the immediate period following a camp. A sports drink with nutritional supplements can help restore nutrients.
  • Post camp meals should include plenty of carbohydrates, but also be balanced. They should be easy to digest.

Remember, you are not just eating to solve an urge. Eating serves as a way to refuel your body, and help restore it. Much of the weight lost during a camp is from fluids not the loss of fat. Getting re-hydrated, replacing lost sodium and eating carbohydrates can go a long way in getting you prepared for your next workout.

Pre-Camp Diet, What to Eat?

Preparing for Long Snapping Camps is crucial in getting the most out of your experience. The right food intake can help you beat camp fatigue and get the most out of your time and financial investment.

What are the best foods to eat leading up to camp? A diet strong in carbohydrates will help your stamina and performance. Too many players focus on diets high in meats and they ingest too much fat. Fats can soak up your energy and can lead to indigestion and even cramps.

A solid diet to consider would consist of about 60% carbs, 15% protein and about 25% fats. You should begin to increase your intake of fluids. Drink 16 ounces of water when you awake and drink before, during, and after exercising. In practice you will probably need at least a liter of fluid per practice hour.

It is all about making good choices. Choose toast rather than a donut. Instead of a burger select grilled fish. Instead of greasy French fries have a baked potato. Almonds and other nuts can provide much more energy than chips. Look at food as fuel, not just as something that gives you pleasure.

Your diet is just one way to prepare for your upcoming Camp. You will also need to prepare physically and mentally. The proper fuel can help you do that.

So, You Didn’t Make the Underclassmen Invite Event Cut….Now What?

As you know, Chris Sailer and I sent out the invites to the Underclassmen Invite Event in CA yesterday. Many woke up happy today, while many were left wondering what happened.

The world is not ending. If you did not get invited, you can still prove yourself to us either at the remaining spring camps (NC, GA and even CA Prep) and, more importantly, at the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas on May 4-5, 2013. Sailer and I will be choosing a couple deserving athletes from these locations.

Therefore, if you feel that you are deserving of being invited, prove it to us in either NC, GA, CA and/or VEGAS!

Nutrition, Part One

Throughout the year, I receive a ton of questions about lifting and nutrition. I know the basics on these topics but not in depth like someone more qualified such as Brian Van Hook. Hook is a long time friend of mine (think junior high) that is a great human being and just happens to be certified by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES). If you ever been to our Vegas Events, Hook is the massive human being taking photos and assisting me throughout the weekend.

I recently asked him to write a couple guest blogs on certain topics that I want him to cover being that he is the expert and they are right up his alley. Expect them to be very basic, my request since not everyone knows what all the technical terms are, and sprinkled over the next couple of months. He will cover supplements, how to lose weight, how to gain weight, etc. You can follow Hook on Twitter by click HERE and feel free to check out his site HERE

With no further delay, here is Hook’s first guest blog:

NUTRITION, PART ONE
Do you eat breakfast? If the answer is NO don’t even think about asking me about supplements or to make you a diet plan of what you should eat on a daily basis!
I have new athletes and their parents ask me all the time what supplements they should be talking, and if I could make them a diet plan to help them gain or lose weight. It’s a 50/50 shot they will answer “o yea” I eat breakfast every day. They then proceed to say they have cereal every morning. People, cereal is not a good breakfast for an athlete (yes, this includes whole wheat Cheerios).

The following is a copy of a hand out I give to all new youth athletes I work with when training them throughout the year. It’s actually not even mine; I copied it from Mike Boyle (one of the best S&C coaches in the country)

Breakfast Option #1: Worse Case Scenario
2 glasses of chocolate milk, something is better than nothing!

Breakfast Option #2: Lazy Mans Breakfast
Protein shake: Supplies protein and can be made in less than 2 minutes. Just add water and ice cubes. A spoon full of Fiber is also a great addition (FIBER: Plain Metamucil or a WalMart brand will work fine)
**I personally use Gold Standard 100% Whey by Optimum Nutrition with Almond Milk (I’m allergic to dairy milk) if I’m running late and don’t have time to make my egg’s and toast.  And post workout I use Muscle Milk after every workout. The Gold Standard is better, but the Muscle Milk tastes great with water (Muscle Milk has a higher fat content, so I try to reserve it for after workouts only). I mix my morning shake with frozen blueberries and ground flax so I can’t even taste “Gold” protein.

Breakfast Option #3: Fast Food Breakfast
2 egg McMuffins at McDonalds with low fat milk. This is actual pretty healthy & high in protein. NO DUNKIN DONUTS! They use fake eggs. NO BURGER KING! They use high fat croissants. Don’t substitute Sausage McMuffin for egg, the sausage drives the fat and calories way up.

Breakfast Option #4: A Good Breakfast
A good breakfast starts with eggs and not cereal. 3-4 eggs with whole grain toast is a great breakfast. Add some fruit (berries or bananas) if you can. Berries are the best, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries are all high in antioxidants.

If there is anything more you would like to see posted please feel free to comment below. Keep working hard…..Van Hook_________________________________________________________________
