What Do You Get at a Rubio Long Snapping Camp?

INSTRUCTION – There is simply no doubt that you will receive the best instruction in the country at a Rubio Long Snapping camp. It is unprecedented and known by college and NFL coaches throughout the country. When you sign up for a Rubio Long Snapping camp, you get perfection. I am there, my senior staff is there, on time and we don’t leave early.

EXPOSURE – Every camp that Rubio Long Snapping run offers the most exposure possible for Long Snappers. I bombard several avenues to make sure my Long Snappers are visible to all. The Rubio Long Snapping YouTube Channel has over 970,000 views (this is all just for Long Snapper….NO kickers are on the page). RubiosBlog.com has been viewed well over 1,000,000 times. @TheChrisRubio on Twitter has over 5,750 followers (many of which are coaches) and the Rubio Long Snapping Facebook Page has over 5,600 followers (many of which are coaches) and stories in publications all over the world make Rubio Long Snapping the one stop shop for the most exposure in the country.

PLAYER PROFILE PAGE – As soon as you perform in a camp in the fall (or after) of your freshman year, you get a PLAYER PROFILE PAGE….for free! This player profile page is controlled by me and it can have any information you wanted added to it at anytime. You can use it for your recruiting purposes throughout high school.

RANKINGS – As soon as you perform in a camp in the fall (or after) of your freshman year, you get a ranking. I don’t rank off a target. I don’t rank off a formula. That would be ignorant. I rank off of THIS blog that describes what makes a Long Snapper great. That ranking can be adjusted anytime I see you live. Coaches look to these rankings religiously in their recruiting of Long Snappers.

YOUTUBE VIDEO – At every single Rubio Long Snapping camp you attend, you will be filmed for a YouTube video. Those videos will be placed on your free player profile page. You can use the video at your own discretion. It is yours and there is no extra charge for this service.

FILM SESSION – At Rubio Long Snapping camps, I will go in with you to a classroom and review the morning sessions. Long Snappers attend but I really want the parents/guardians to attend as well since this is when a majority of the learning will take place.

RECRUITING SEMINAR – At Rubio Long Snapping camp, Chris Sailer and I run an hour long recruiting seminar where we hit on some key topics and always open it up to a Q&A session for the specialists and parents. You will not leave without all your questions answered.

PROVEN SUCCESS – Dont’ believe me? See what others have to say HERE

RUBIO LONG SNAPPING SHIRT – You know, to wear at prom and such:)

Trust me when I tell you, I could keep this list going and going and going. Things like Friendship, Confidence, Humor are just some immediate things that pop into my head….see you soon! Remember, Not only on the field, but off. I am not your coach. I am your Rubio and I will be there for you.

How to Get an Unofficial Recruiting Trip

Ask. Seriously, that is all you have to do . Call the football office (THE PLAYER CALLS) and say the following when they answer…
“Hi, my name is ___________ and I am a Rubio Long Snapper in the class of ____. (if you want to brag about your ranking, here is where you would do it). I am very interested in going to, and being recruited by,  _____(insert name of school)_____. I am looking to get put on the UNOFFICIAL RECRUIT LIST for your game vs. __________. What is the next step?”
At this point, they will most likely ask you some basic questions…(Name again, school, address, etc.). Answer them all because then you will be in their database and start getting more stuff from the school. Please note: if this is done during the off-season, you simply tell them what day(s) you will be on campus and they will do the rest. Couple Points….
  • The difference between an OFFICIAL RECRUITING TRIP and an UNOFFICIAL RECRUITING TRIP is that the athlete pays his way on the UNOFFICIAL RECRUITING TRIP
  • You can take AS MANY unofficial recruiting trips as you’d like. You are only allowed five official recruiting trips.
  • The bigger the game, the bigger the recruit you have to be in order to get those tickets. If you are not an absolute stud, you most likely won’t get a big time rivalry game.
  • You can start this process anytime, but usually sophomore year is good to let it rain.
  • Dress accordingly. Look clean and presentable. Rubio Long Snapping shirt or sweatshirt is always a good choice.
  • If you are too thin, wear thermals. If you are too heavy, wear something that fits well. If you are built well, wear something tight to show off what you got. Unofficial visits are a good way for a coach to see if you pass the eyeball test. Make sure you pass.
  • If parents go with the athlete, make sure the parents have a lot of taffy in their mouths so they don’t speak. Remember, the coach doesn’t want to hear from the parents. He wants to hear from the athlete.

Rubio Long Snapper Nick Umble

A couple months ago I received a call from a Long Snapper named Nick Umble. It was a standard phone call that I receive several times a month. He told me how he was recently very interested in Long Snapping and wanted to go full speed into it to get to the next level. He said he was very determined and would stop at nothing.

All things I had heard before.

But then he told me he was born in 1978 and was just about to RETIRE from the Army as a GREEN BERET. To say that Nick has done a TON for his country is a major understatement. He said he did what he needed to do in the Army and was ready for his next challenge.

Long Snapping was his next challenge.

Umble, NickNeedless to say, Nick is VERY driven and will stop at nothing. I have worked with him several times and he is an absolute workhorse. He is a large, strong Long Snapper that will do EXACTLY what you tell him to do.

Colleges need to look at him seriously for his drive, dedication and for the fact that since he has already retired from the Army, his schooling will be free.

The film you see below is from his first Rubio Long Snapping camp in WA this fall. I have worked with him since and he is already MUCH improved.

He deserves a shot at the next level and he will get one.

Where Should a Long Snapper Hit? The Rubio Zone

The Rubio Zone is EXACTLY where the Long Snapper should hit the punter for best accuracy on a punt snap. The Rubio Zone is from the punter’s mid thigh to his lowest rib and no wider than their armpits.

Anything above the lowest rib could cause the punter to turn his hand’s over which will force him to flip them back over to punt the ball. Anything below the punter’s mid thigh will cause the punter to bend and that could throw off their timing. Anything outside of the armpits will force the punter to step one way or the other.

The Rubio Zone is the perfect location and what every Long Snapper should try to hit on every single snap. Anything outside of The Rubio Zone will negatively impact your overall snap time, as well as total get off time (snap, catch and punt).

Form Letter to a Coach

You should send a school a simple letter/e-mail/Facebook message to let schools know you are interested and for you to get on their radar/mailing list.

First, make sure you send it to the Special Teams Coach and/or the Recruiting Coordinator. Remember to keep it very simply and to the point. The person reading your letter will almost always be male and they don’t need any fluff. They will want a bottom line and quick points.

I created a template for you and it should do the trick. Embrace….

How a High School Coach Should Deal with a Long Snapper

Chris Rubio of Rubio Long Snapping offers up some quick advice to high school coaches and what they should do with their Long Snapper.

232

Consider Which Parent to Take With You On Trips

Yup, you read that correctly. An athlete should be very careful when going on an official (school pays for the trip and you only get five of them) or an unofficial (athlete/parents pay for the trip and you can take as many as you’d like) visit when deciding who goes with them.

Let me break it down for you….

If you are going to a school as a football recruit and aren’t exactly ideal size, you might want to leave your 5 foot tall mother at home. The mom’s height will spook the coach since they will think “Oh man, this kid is done growing.

On the other hand, if you are undersized and your dad is a giant, definitely bring him since the coach would think “Ok, kid doesn’t pass the eyeball test right now, but he has the same genes so he will get there in some time

Remember, coaches will already know what you can do through my rankings and by speaking with me. But, they will like to see how you pass the eyeball test, so don’t give them negatives to think about when recruiting you.

What Coaches Will Ask a Recruit

Everyone always wants to know the key questions a coach will ask their son/daughter when they are getting recruited and the truth is, it’s the basics…

  • “So, what’s up?”
  • “How is school?”
  • “How is the weather?”
  • “How are your grades?”
  • “Would you be interested in coming to _____________ to get your degree and play some football?”

Right now, you are thinking “this is a joke, Rubio.” No, it is not. The coach is not looking to solve the world’s problems by speaking to your kid. He is simply trying to see if your kid is a moron or not.

Seriously.

They just want to hear the athlete speak, make sure he/she is not an idiot and someone that can operate on their own without mommy/daddy speaking for them.

So, you want to prep your kid? Just speak to them.

5 Things a Parents Should Be During the Recruiting Process….

1. SUPPORTIVE!
Your child will need you more than ever during this period. This will be extra challenging as they are a teen and know it all. Therefore, you must remain supportive and on their team. Guide them in the right direction but let them walk the path.

2. ORGANIZED!
There will be tons of pamphlets, camps, emails, directions and communication. A teen usually has too much on their plate to manage it all. This is where an adult’s organization skills can hopefully relieve some pressure off the athlete.

3. A ROLE PLAYER!
Practice with your child the conversations he/she will have with the coaches and recruiting coordinators. It looks terrible when a coach asks an athlete a question and the athlete looks to mommy or daddy for the answer. Even worse is if mommy or daddy simply answers for the athlete.

4. OPEN-MINDED!
Not every athlete is going to attend the top D1 schools in the country. If your son wants to play, there are literally hundreds of schools out there with teams. Find several that aren’t necessarily on your radar and embrace them. There is something out there for everyone.

5. IN THE BACKGROUND!
The coach doesn’t want to talk to you. Trust me, I speak to them all the time. They are recruiting the athlete, NOT you. Like I have said a hundred times, when you (the parent) were dating your spouse, did you want to date them or their parents? Exactly. Stay in the background and let your son/daughter be a big boy/girl. This goes for interviews with sports writers, as well. Let the athlete speak for themselves.

3 Things That Will Upset a Coach

Starting a text with “I have a question

  • JUST ASK! Now, you have wasted the coach’s time and have put him in a bad mood right off the bat. Just come out with your question right off the bat. All he is going to say is “Ok” and then you are going to ask the question. He will be busy enough, so he doesn’t need to double up questions.

Starting a text or email with “I know you are really busy but….

  • If you know the person is busy, why are you bothering them? You will just end up upsetting them. You don’t want to be known as that kid.

Bragging to them about meaningless things

  • There is no need to tell them you are the top Long Snapper at your high school. We should hope so for the love of all that is holy. Definitely no need to brag about being the top Long Snapper at a camp that had ten kids at it. That would be like Sailer bragging he has more hair than me…not really saying much:)

In just 12 years,  Chris Rubio, President and Owner of Rubio Long Snapping, has become the #1 Long Snapping instructor in the country and the go-to man when a college coach needs a Long Snapper. Colleges from across the country rely on “Rubio’s” word day in and day out on who the best Long Snappers are in the country. Rubio Long Snapping has assisted in over 300 Long Snappers earning FULL SCHOLARSHIPS to major colleges and universities just for Long Snapping and many into the NFL as well.

Sad, But True

There once was a Long Snapper that went to visit his favorite college in the fall. He took his father. His father spoke too much. Rubio told the father to stop talking to the coaches as they would want to talk to the son and not the father. Rubio told the the father it was like when he was dating his wife. Did he want to hang out and speak with her or her parents? He said he got it.

The Long Snapper got a tour of the weight room and the locker room from the coaches. The father kept talking.

The Long Snapper was asked questions by the coaches, the father answered.

The coaches offered the Long Snapper a preferred walk-on spot. The kid was ecstatic. The father reached out, shook the coaches hand and said we will take it. The kid didn’t speak.

The father called Rubio after this and said “they” had committed to their dream school as a preferred walk-on! Rubio congratulated them and hung up.

Two minutes later, Rubio’s phone rang, he answered it. It was the head coach of the college that had just offered the Long Snapper a preferred walk-on spot. The coach asked Rubio what he knew about the dad he had just encountered. Rubio told him all he knew. The coach replied with “love the kid and his ability to snap but we are going to pull the offer because we can’t stand the dad and don’t want to have to deal with him for four years.”

The offer was pulled. The Long Snapper did not go to a four year university.

THE END

p.s. Yes, this is a true story.

What a Preferred Walk-On Needs to Ask

You got a preferred walk-on spot to a major university? That is great news BUT know what you are getting into….

  • They (coaches/school) will most likely try to bring in more than one preferred walk-on. They will do this for competition. ASK IF THEY ARE BRINGING SOMEONE ELSE IN
  • They will want you to get on campus soon. ASK WHAT IS THE EARLIEST YOU CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF THE TEAM. You will want to get there asap to get a jump on the rest of the athletes that will be competing with you for the scholarship.
  • They will tell you that you can earn the scholarship. ASK EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IN ORDER TO EARN THE SCHOLARSHIP (use the word EXACTLY so you can hold them to it)
  • They will tell you that you can be put on scholarship immediately if you start. ASK EXACTLY WHEN YOU WILL BE PUT ON SCHOLARSHIP. Will it be after the first game you start, the next quarter/semester, or the next year? (Yes, use the word EXACTLY again so you can hold them to it).

ASK RUBIO “How do you tell a coach”, “Where does an Inexperienced player begin”, “Heavy footballs?”

Dear Rubio….

How do you tell a coach that you are de-committing from his college to go to another college? How do you approach him and what tone do you use?
Signed, Confused

Confused….
You need to be up front with them and make it quick. If you are leaving a preferred walk-on for a scholarship, they will completely understand. If they argue with you, they are lying. No one would offer to pay for a car (tuition) if someone was giving them a car (tuition) for free.

If it is a preferred walk-on to a walk-on or scholarship to scholarship, explain your reasoning and be prepared to be swayed back so be strong. BE PREPARED and BE POLITE. That exact coach might be your coach in the near future since they never stay at the same location too long.

If it is a full scholarship to a preferred walk-on, you need your head examined.

Dear Rubio….

Where does an inexperienced player begin to make it as a “Starter” on their high school varsity football team? Where do you begin?  What advice would you give to an inexperienced player?  Suggestions to go from JV to Varsity to college scouts looking at you
-#JV2Varsity

#JV2Varsity…
This is a great question and I would say it all starts with showing dedication to your craft and your sport. You don’t need to be the loudest talker on the team, you just need to be the smartest and hardest worker…the coaches WILL notice. My advice would be to show up early, bust your butt, do what your told and keep your mouth shut. If a player is ALWAYS hustling and moving, while not being afraid to make a mistake, that will move them up quickly.

Coaches understand a player will make a mistake…it happens. They just want you to make the mistake at 100 mph and learn from it. If a player doesn’t learn from the mistake, he is showing ignorance and the coach won’t have confidence to move them up and put them in the game. Once you are in the game, that is where all your works comes in and the scouts will notice and the coaches will make them notice. If they don’t, I will:)

Dear Rubio….

What is your opinion on a Long Snapper using a heavy ball?
-K Dad

K Dad….
I am a big fan of the weighted footballs (best one I have seen is from WizardKicking and is the Baden 30 oz model) for warming up, laydown drill and some shorter snaps (less than ten yards) BUT I only like them for Long Snappers that have exceptional form. If a Long Snapper does NOT have exquisite form and uses a heavy ball, it will create more bad habits (think little kid shooting from the three point line in basketball…they push the ball instead of having really nice form like they would in close).

Remember, if you would like to ASK RUBIO a question on any topic (honestly, it shouldn’t be on Long Snapping since you can find almost all questions answered on my blog and on RubioLongSnapping.com, just go ahead and send your question(s) to Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com with the subject line: ASK RUBIO.

ASK RUBIO “My coach just….”

Dear Rubio….

My coach just took another job at a bigger school. What do I do now?
-Angry Long Snapper

Angry Long Snapper…
I have actually answered this question a couple times recently due to coaches leaving or being fired. Bottom line, just go out and do your job. It most likely will happen again in other positions. The coaching change will not impact how you snap the ball. That is what is most important: how you snap the ball to enable your team to win. You chose the school, not the coach. If you did choose the school based on the coach, you have obviously NOT been paying attention to what Sailer and I have been saying for years.

Dear Rubio….

I have recently committed to snap for a coach that could possibly be leaving the University after this season. He wants to take me with him to the bigger college and snap over there. The problem is that although the current school is a HBCU I feel like I would feel more at home and do better with my studies there instead of the bigger school.

-Snapper From the Deep South

Snapper From the Deep South….
Stay with your commitment. The coach wants you to go to make his job easier. If you go with him, he won’t have to start from scratch and recruit another Long Snapper. He knows you are good and will do a solid job…that is why he recruited you.

I always say, pick a school that you can see yourself being happy at IF you weren’t playing football. You will have a lot of downtime in the off-season and if you aren’t happy, you will want to transfer and that RARELY works out. Stay with the smaller school.

Long Snapper SCORES Touchdown

D'Appollino, AlanAs I am sure everybody knows (well, everybody involved with Long Snapping), a Alan D’Appollonio of Arkansas scored a touchdown! If you haven’t seen this VERY creative play, it is a must watch.

Alan attended several Rubio Long Snapping Vegas Events and ended up being a 5 Star Long Snapper that was ranked 11th in the country in 2011. Alan has always had tremendous athleticism and it looks as though the Arkansas staff has taken note. Congratulations to Alan and the Arkansas football team.
