VEGAS XXIX CONTEST!

As you know, for each VEGAS Event, Rubio Long Snapping will always have a contest to earn a FREE admission to VEGAS XXIX. This year will be a little different! Here we go:

WHO: Any Long Snapper from 7th grade to second year of Junior College that would like to attend VEGAS XXIX for free.

WHATRubio Long Snapping VEGAS XXIX Gives Back!

Over the years we have seen some excellent examples of Rubio Long Snappers giving back to their community.  I want to see which Rubio Long Snappers are out there already volunteering their time, being active leaders in their community and, if you are not, why aren’t you and it is now time to get off your butts to do so!

For this contest, I would like to see which Long Snappers are involved in their local charities or actively volunteer across the world. You will need to submit a video entry, no longer than two minutes in length. Your video will have to be uploaded to YouTube with the title: Your Name, Rubio Long Snapping VEGAS XXIX Gives Back, 2016.

Your video entry will have to clearly state who you are, where you are, what charity or volunteer organization you are involved in, and why you are passionate about volunteering with that specific group.

The overall focus of the video should be why giving back is important to you.  It doesn’t matter who or what you support or how you give back, just show us why and how you do!  If you pick up trash off the beach on weekends, awesome, tell us why that is important to you.  Do you hand out meals or blankets to those in need, tell us why it is you started volunteering in that specific way.  This is not a competition to see who can give back the “best”.  We just want to encourage the ENTIRE Rubio Long Snapping family to get out and volunteer.  Don’t stress or put too much thought into it and do not feel bad if you’ve been slacking, simply get up and go!

This video does NOT need to be done with high tech cameras or anything like that as simply creating an edited iMovie on your iPhone would be more than sufficient to get your point across to the Rubio Long Snapping family.

WHEN: All entries must be submitted to me by email (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping) by October 1st at noon pst.

WHERE: All across the world!

WHY: To motivate and energize the Rubio Long Snapping family to get out and help their community and those around them.  The most inspiring video entry will earn a free admission to VEGAS XXIX.

Remember, Long Snapping can take you far in life, but giving back to your community will take you even farther!

Vegas XXIX_Contest

Please Note: If you win the contest and are already registered for VEGAS XXIX, your free admission will be pushed to VEGAS XXX in May!

It Wasn’t Supposed to be This Difficult

IMG_0550Headed to college…..

Everything is different now. People are looking at you like you are odd. You are at a whole new place in your life. Family is calling you. Old friends have wished you well. Everything is changing.

You knew it was coming and you worked for countless years to get to this point. You definitely had not done it all on your own. The list of people that have assisted you in getting to this point is gigantic and seems to keep growing.

You are amazed with yourself that you actually did it. You planned and planned and planned for this moment, yet, you still are overwhelmed that it finally came to fruition.

You don’t think you will be able to get through it. There’s no way you can. You continuously remind yourself that you are not the first person to do this, and definitely will not be the last.

The days get longer and longer. You look at old photos on your phone. You text. You call. You sob. You check Facebook. Sometimes you cry when people are looking and, a lot of times, when they aren’t. You never thought it would be this rough. This IS what YOU wanted, right?

You have spoken to others that have gone through what you are struggling with. You insist there’s no way they could have had it this rough. Times are different. Things are different. This is what you wanted, right? This is for the best, right? This is the next step in life, isn’t it?

Yes.

Yes it is. This is the plan. This is the way it needs to be. This is what has to happen in life in order to advance.

Who would have thought being a parent and having your child go to college would be so tough:)

Where Are They Now? Rubio Long Snapper Bobby Shepard

12966708_10154050395847305_193289109_n

The next installment of “Where Are They Now?” takes us to Northern California to catch up with former Fresno State Rubio Long Snapper Bobby Shepard!

What is your current occupation? I am a firefighter.

Where do you live? I live in Lodi, California.

Married? Kids? Single, with a three year old chocolate lab.

What is your fondest memory of your time playing college football? Both creating lifelong bonds with teammates and getting to travel the country and play in incredible stadiums. I played for a head coach that didn’t back down from any team. I was able to play in the Rose Bowl (and beat Rubio’s Bruins!), play at Camp Randall stadium, play at Nebraska, and at Candlestick Park to name a few.

If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snappers, what would it be? Work your butt off. Not only as an athlete, but even more so as a student. You can only wear pads for so long. There is so much more to your life than football. Also, have fun. It truly will be the quickest four or five years of your life. Enjoy it.

If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snapping PARENTS, what would it be? Support your son. My parents only missed two games in my entire playing career. Having them there every step of the way was incredibly rewarding. They were there for the game winning field goals and the rough losses. To this day it is something we always talk about. Very few kids get the opportunity to be a college athlete, soak it in with them.

12308534_10153718196912305_7028083895285253500_nWhen was the last time you snapped a ball and for what reason? I didn’t snap a football for probably two years after attending NFL free agent camps and try outs. Then probably a month ago some fellow firefighters wanted to see if I could still snap, and how fast it was.

If you could go back and play football in college again, would you go to the same school or a different one? Why? I would absolutely do it all over again and be a Fresno State Bulldog in a heart beat! Only one school wanted me to walk on for them. I am forever in debt to Coach Hill for letting me walk on. I am also beyond thankful to Coach John Baxter (USC) and Coach Pete Alamar (Stanford) for working with me. Also the city of Fresno truly cares about their Bulldogs and Fresno State as a whole. Their passion at games was unmatched.

Any regrets during college? Something you wish you had done or maybe hadn’t? My first few years in college, I didn’t really enjoy myself. My life was all football and school. While I loved that I was devoted to my sport and education, I didn’t really get to experience all that college had to offer until later in my career.

What tremendous thing have you been a part of or experienced since you graduated? Since I graduated in 2011, I was able to attend Graduate School while playing my Senior season. I earned my Master’s degree in Sport Psychology. Obviously, my job is incredible to me! As cliché as it sounds, I love being the person that gets respond to help people when they are injured or having problems in their life.

Rubio Long Snapping YouTube Page!

The Rubio Long Snapping YouTube page has hit 1,000,000 views!!!

This is simply an incredible accomplishment as this account is, and it pains me to say it like this, only for Long Snappers.

To me, what is the most impressive thing about hitting the 1,000,000 mark in well less than ten years is that they are all genuine views and not done from a bot.

A bot is a an app companies pay for to increase their views….basically, a formula is created and it keeps “watching” the videos. It is actually funny (and sad) to watch other “bot” videos get massive amount of views in one day when you know for a fact no one is watching them and it is not authentic by being smoke and mirrors….bottom line, keep an eye out for fake exposure.

Preparing for VEGAS XXVIII

VEGAS XXVIII (the 2nd largest Long Snapping event in the world, our January event is the 1st) is taking place on May 21-22, 2016 and there are a couple key things to know as we head into that weekend.

  1. CONFIRMATION EMAILS with basic details of the weekend will be sent out on Monday, May 16th. Be on the lookout and if you are registered, but don’t get one, let us know ASAP!
  2. The VEGAS XXVIII PACKET (this will have ALL of the weekends information in GREAT detail) will be emailed to you as a PDF on Thursday, May 19th. This will be your baby for the whole weekend. We decided it was best to let you have them as a file in your email, instead of printed out for several reasons (no need to make copies, you can’t lose this one, it will be on your phones which are always with you). We will NOT be printing any packets out so if you do want it printed out, you will need to do that yourself.

Questions Regarding the College Camps

As you know, hopefully, Chris Sailer and I have posted the schedule of college camps we will be running this summer. Trust me when I tell you, we could have run another 30 of them for the coaches that asked us, but we simply don’t have time.

BIGGEST THING TO KNOW ABOUT COLLEGE CAMPS is to NOT wear yourself out by trying to hit all of them. As a Long Snapper, you should hit about three. Think of yourself like a pitcher in baseball…you have a pitch count. The more you snap, the worse you will do. One bad performance can crush you in recruiting as all coaches speak to each other. DO NOT waste your time and money by hitting too many camps.

Here are the top five questions regarding the college camps (Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Oregon, Cal, Miami, Georgia, Washington, Cincinnati)….

  1. How do you get invited? You don’t. They are open to all 8th graders – JC. Some schools might be a tad different so check on their respective site. Younger Long Snappers should focus on the regional Rubio Long Snapping camps and FBU.
  2. How do I sign up for the camp(s)? You go to their football site and register. You can also call the football office.
  3. At what age do you recommend my son goes to a college camp? The time to shine will be in between his junior and senior summer (unless you are a freak, in a good way, and then I would highly recommend dominating between sophomore and junior year). However, I personally recommend going as early as possible to cut the jitters. It can be very stressful snapping in front of a high profile coach and you want to get the feeling out of the way early, when they most likely won’t be paying attention to you.
  4. Will the camp(s) be run like your personal camps? Not really. I am hired to run their camp so I am on their schedule. If they want 40 minutes of blocking, that’s what we will be doing. If a coach wants to see John Smith snap thirty in a row, that’s what they get. These camps are more showcases. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT, under any circumstances, have my Long Snappers just snap to snap. I know that is ignorant and I won’t stand for it. DOUBLE PLEASE NOTE: if you are at a college camp that Rubio Long Snapping is not running, godspeed.
  5. Will you be ranking from the college camps? No. Per NCAA rules, I am not allowed to rank and/or evaluate from the college camps. You could be absolutely phenomenal and I would not be able to rank you or invite to the TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE Camp. If you are at a college camp and someone does invite you to their “invite only” camp, they are breaking a very big rule.

If you any other questions, please feel free to comment on this blog so I can answer it and maybe clear up someone else’s confusion as well.

Where Are They Now? Rubio Long Snapper Bobby Dunn

10304980_727548790637419_3270315977127620750_nFor the next installment of “Where Are They Now?” we head to Illinois to hear from Rubio Long Snapper Bobby Dunn who went to high school in IL, received a scholarship to the Air Force Academy and is heading toward becoming a DOCTOR!!!

1.  What is your current occupation?

I am currently in my 2nd year of medical school at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine as well as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve. After graduation I will commission as a captain in the Air Force as an active duty officer and serve as a physician.

2. Where do you live?

Carol Stream, Illinois.

3. Married/ Kids?

I recently got engaged to my beautiful fiancée Dominique in December. We will be getting married in May of 2018 after I finish medical school.

blob4. What is your fondest memory of your time playing college football?

My fondest memory of college football comes from a couple of early mornings in February before spring practices started. After the off season in the weight room the team takes part in “Cages.”. All of the players report down to the field house before breakfast and classes start to go through 2 hours of speed, agility and strength drills with all of the coaches. Although this was difficult and not particularly fun, it is my fondest memory because it was one of the rare times we as long snappers could compete directly with the rest of the players. At the end of the two day training there is a competition between starters and backups that is an “anything goes” 1 on 1 tug of war with a car tire. I think I enjoyed this so much because it was an opportunity to break the monotony of practices and show off our largely hidden athletic prowess as long snappers.

5. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snappers, what would it be?

When choosing schools to apply to, and eventually a school to attend, try to choose a school that you could see yourself loving even if you were not playing football. Keep your dreams big and work your tail off to achieve them, just know at some point football will have to end. At that point it will be important to be somewhere with great friends and incredible opportunities.

6. If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snapping PARENTS, what would it be?

I think my parents did everything right and I appreciate everything they did along the way. The number one bit of advice I gathered from them is to ENJOY THE RIDE! Your sons will love you and appreciate everything that you do. At the end of each day make it known that you believe in them, you support them and most of all you love them no matter what happens with football.
7. When was the last time you snapped a ball and for what reason?

The last time I snapped a football was about a year and a half ago in Texas at a country music festival. Some buddies and I were tailgating outside of our tent and made some friends with the guys in the spot over. One of them turned out to have played college football and he had a hard time believing that I played Division 1 football as well. Luckily he had a football so I could prove myself. There was no stop watch there but I am confident that it was a persuasive demonstration of quality long snapping.

8.   If you could go back and play football in college again, would you go to the same school or a different one? Why?

I would absolutely choose to attend the Air Force Academy all over again. It was definitely a different college experience with some hard days, but overall I loved it. I met some of my best friends and enjoyed several unique experiences.

If there are any high school long snappers who have aspirations to serve our country and play college football at a high level you should consider one of the service academies. If you have any questions talk to Rubio and he can give you my contact information, I’d love to talk to you about it.

9. Any regrets during college? Something you wish you had done or maybe hadn’t?

I do not have any regrets during college. I had big dreams to play football all 4 years however I had even bigger dreams to attend medical school and be a military doctor. After a year of football my grades were not as competitive as I would have liked them to be, and unfortunately I had to give up football to keep up with my grades and military training. I absolutely would have loved to continue to play football longer but I know that I gave it my best shot and am happy how everything has turned out.

10.   What tremendous thing have you been a part of or experienced since you graduated?

I have been blessed with the incredible opportunity to stay in school and wait another 4 years to enter the real world. That itself is tremendous. Besides that I have wooed a great woman, become an uncle and been a mediocre participant in recreational basketball and softball leagues. Life is good!

Positive Vibes Needed for Rubio Long Snapper Ryan Parris

12983214_10209156556736206_8333383286686519457_oA couple of weeks ago I was contacted by Butch Parris. Butch is a long time member of the Rubio Family and his son, Ryan, is on the team at the University of Alabama. He notified me of a medical issue Ryan was having in Tuscaloosa. I offered to write this blog, so here we go.

Ryan needs some MAJOR positive vibes right now from the whole Rubio Long Snapping Family.

Here is the deal….

Couple weeks ago…The weekend of the LSU game this past season, Ryan started having vision and irritation problems in his left eye. It wasn’t the first time for something like that, he’s worn contacts for years and it happens occasionally.

This time though, it didn’t get any better.

To make a long story short, he has Acanthamoeba keratitis in his left eye. It’s a rare disease where an amoeba invades the cornea. It can result in permanent visual impairment or even blindness. It often takes 4 or 5 months to diagnose, but Ryan was lucky, it only took 2 months for him. Since the week after the National Championship game, he’s been visiting a cornea specialist in Birmingham once a week. During that time, he’s been on a strict regimen of drops that in some ways do as much harm as they do good.

We got some good news today, his vision, the irritation and the infection are all getting better. The biggest issue now is his cornea. Throughout this process, the irritation in his eye (in some ways exacerbated by the drops) has really been bad for his cornea. Today, the doctor put an amniotic membrane on his eye to a) slow down the damage being done and b) help the cornea repair itself.

If that membrane works, he should make a complete recovery. If it doesn’t, he’s going to need a corneal transplant. That wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but it would most likely end his time playing football.

Today….But, he went back to the doctor yesterday and things have gotten worse. Right now, it looks like the infection has made a comeback.

It’s so bad, that when the doc held two fingers up two feet in front of him (with his right eye covered) he could only tell that her hand was there. He had no idea how many fingers she was holding up.

He’s going back to the doc tomorrow. If things aren’t better, it’s likely that he’ll have surgery on Thursday.

PLEASE keep the entire Parris family in your thoughts. This kid needs all of the positive vibes he can get right now.
