Recap of the CA Spring Camp (3/5/17)

Rubio Long Snapping traveled to CA on March 5th, 2017 for their spring camp. Rubio Long Snapping will be traveling the country this spring instructing Long Snappers and getting them all ready for the 2nd biggest event of the year (the largest is our January Vegas Event), VEGAS 30!

This was the first Rubio Long Snapping regional camp that featured the RSI Testing to track a Long Snappers progress throughout the year and it was an overwhelming success. You can find out more about this new format HERE and the RSI’s from this actual camp already posted HERE

Simon Samarzich

Long Snappers from CA, NV, TX, IL, GA & UT all traveled to get the best instruction and the most exposure possible for Long Snapping.

The overall camp champion was Simon Samarzich (CA, ’19).  VEGAS 30! Samarzich has been on a tear ever since VEGAS XXIX in January where he was one of the most dominant Long Snappers in his class. You can tell he has been working hard and smart to fine tune his overall snapping motion. He is very athletic and extremely consistent with his snapping speed. Tons of upside on Simon as he just continues to improve.

You can see the full finals below….

Top 2017 Long Snappers

Noah Rodriguez-Trammell

Noah Rodriguez-Trammell looked his usual casual and comfortable self. He has great size, snaps a really smooth ball and is easily one of the most consistent Long Snappers in his class. Utah is getting a good one.

Harrison Hoffman was very solid all day and even got an offer from San Jose St. right after the camp. Easily the smoothest Long Snapper in CA and possibly the country. Never stops impressing me.

Chance Nelson is one of the most athletic Long Snappers in the country. Kid can fly downfield and is snapping a solid ball back to the punter.

Scott Stevens snaps a powerful ball and can pass an eyeball test from three miles away. Kid is massive and can play right now in college.

Notables: Johnny Fuentes and Nick Rovetti

Top 2018 Long Snappers

Brendan Bentley

Brendan Bentley was on fire all day in CA. Body is looking very solid and he is definitely moving better on his feet. Should be a flat out pure athlete by VEGAS 30. Love his attitude and work ethic.

Gabriel Cervantes continues to impress me with his overall frame and his snapping. Kid has grown about a foot in one year and he is using all of his body really well when he is snapping. Sky is the limit for this kid.

Kyle Petrucci was very impressive when he was snapping the ball hard back to the punter. Massive human being that is beginning to move better on his feet.

James Townsend is incredibly athletic and can easily be one of the top Long Snappers in his class. When he has everything click, his snaps are glorious.

Jesse Hooper was impressive in CA with his strong frame and powerful snaps.

Noah Howell is starting to really pick up steam and was looking solid in CA. Kid has great upside and starting to show off his true potential

Matt Tokos has a great personality and a smooth snap. He is the type of kid that a coach will love on and off the field.

Notables: Waide Brummer, Andrew Domingo, Max Nieland

Top 2019 Long Snappers

Ryan Aguilar

Ryan Aguilar had a very good day in CA. His snapping form is solid and he is able to handle pressure well. Consistency of his speed and just becoming more fluid throughout will really help him out at VEGAS 30.

Mason Napper came all the way out from GA and was impressive. I love his large from and he has great consistency with his snaps. He hovered right around .77 all day long. Excellent upside on Napper.

Nathan Weneta had a solid day in CA. Great from and moves extremely well on his feet. The less he thinks, the better he does. Upside is huge.

Dean Lau won the overall speed competition with a snap of a .72 at 15 yards! Not only can Lau snap the ball fast, the kid can run like the wind. Definite factor on punt coverage.

Brad George is athletic and snaps with rage…..and I love it. Great attitude on a terrific Long Snapper and person.

Dylan Black had a good day with snaps in the .7s. Consistency of speed and size will be huge for Dylan as we creep towards VEGAS 30.

Aidan Livingston impressed me with his work ethic, form and his accuracy. More power and confidence will push him well into the .7s by VEGAS 30.

Notables: JJ Lindsay, Jesse Vasquez, Reed Simmons, Derek Bedell

Top 2020 Long Snappers and beyond….

Aaron Estrada

Aaron Estrada had a great day and made into the finals even though he had an ear infection and was sick. Starting form is good and he handles pressure well. Estrada got a little fatigued in the end but I have a feeling it was due to his body just saying “that’s enough” Very impressive day for Estrada.

Kameron Hawkins has, quite possibly, the best form in his class. He uses his body extremely well and can hit in the low .8s very consistently. Works hard and smart at all times.

Cruz Rubio is a thick, strong Long Snapper that moves well on his feet for his size. When Cruz gets set, he is the best in his class and can hit in the low .7s. Consistency of speed is going to be huge for him.

Jacob Garcia snaps a really nice tight spiral with good consistency. Need to see him get some more pressure on his left hand to center the ball more on the punter. Really good improvement over the past couple of months.

Notables: Michael Munoz, Michael Tokos, Tony Villarreal, Andrew Wells, Chris Kent, JT Greep, Kurt Chesney, Jamie Feldermann

Recap of the FBU TOP GUN Camp (July 14-15, 2016)

CSK_RLS_FBURubio Long Snapping traveled to Rock Hill, SC on July 14-15 to run the FBU TOP GUN Camp and choose the FBU and Army All-Americans. The weather was hot and so were the Long Snappers in attendance. The Long Snappers present were many of the best in the country and the competition did not disappoint. Here are the results of the two day camp….

2017

Thomas Fletcher Army All-American

Thomas Fletcher Army All-American

As expected, the senior class was stacked with Long Snapping talent from all over the country. Previously named Army All-American Thomas Fletcher led the group with very quick hands, incredible form and flawless snaps under pressure. Nick Saban and Alabama got a great one when Fletcher committed on full scholarship to the Tide.

The top four Long Snappers that headed into the competition for the final Army All-American spot were Drew Wise, Kyle Gibbs, Jake Pagel and Mitch Hall. The first ball was between Drew Wise and Kyle Gibbs. Both Long Snappers were excellent over the two day span with VERY fast snaps on a consistent basis. Gibbs proved to be the better Long Snapper by knocking out Wise in just a couple of snaps.

Mitch Hall Army All American

Mitch Hall Army All American

The next battle was between Jake Pagel and Mitch Hall. Both Long Snappers showed great accuracy over the two day span with no let off when heavy pressure or blocking was thrown into the mix. Mitch Hall took the lead early in this one and never let up to defeat Pagel.

The final Army All-American spot came down to a snap off between Kyle Gibbs and Mitch Hall. The heated match went for many snaps as the Long Snappers had to get a total of seven points. They both hit a three right off the bat, but Mitch Hall was able to pull away in the end and earn the coveted Army All-American spot for the East Team!

2018

Max Durschlag

Max Durschlag

The top two Long Snappers in this class were Maddie Golden and Max Durschlag with Durschlag coming out on top in the end to claim the title 2018 TOP GUN MVP Long Snapper. Durschlag started slow but got hot at the right time and was smooth as silk on the final day. Doesn’t say much but doesn’t need to do when he is throwing heat like he did on the final day.

2019

Frank melgarejo

Frank melgarejo

The top two Long Snappers in this class were Drew Little and Frank Melgarejo with Melgarejo edging out Little in the competition to claim the title 2019 TOP GUN MVP Long Snapper. Melgarejo is a very athletic Long Snapper with good upside. Hands are strong and he is aggressive when he is snapping. Working on smoothing out his snapping motion will greatly move him up the ladder. Good potential.

2020

Kameron Hawkins and Aaron Estrada

Kameron Hawkins and Aaron Estrada

Aaron Estrada and Kameron Hawkins were the top 2020 Long Snappers and both earned the honor of being FBU All-Americans at the Alamo Dome in January. Estrada outlasted Jacob Zuhr while Hawkins out performed Jackson Worthen in the finals. Estrada has a nice, long frame with good starting form and can handle pressure well. Hawkins was flat out dominant on both days of the camp and was snapping pearls non-stop. Both of these Long Snappers have the potential to be very dominant over the next couple years.

Carson Garrison was named a 2021 FBU All-American and be invited to the game in January at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio. He was crowned champion by defeating Nick Walker in a snap off on day two of the TOP GUN Camp. Garrison was solid over the two day span with consistent and accurate snaps with times right at the 1 second mark at worst. Very good upside and he handles pressure really well.

CA Camp2016Rubio Long Snapping traveled to CA on March 6th for their spring camp.

Long Snappers came out from CA, AZ, NV, CO & UT to learn from the best and get the most exposure possible for Long Snapping.

The overall winner of the camp was John Aloma! Aloma was on fire all day and Utah Ute commit was the first Long Snapper to ever win the accuracy and speed competition. His confidence is overflowing right now and his ball jumps back to the punter. He is looking ready for college now!

TOP 2016 LONG SNAPPERS:

Johnny Den Bleyker

Johnny Den Bleyker was the best overall Long Snapper in attendance. His form is fantastic and his hands are rockets. ZERO wasted movement. Ball pops right out of the gate. UCLA got a great one.

  • Riley Shackelford just committed to Portland State and you could see why they offered him a full ride. Kid is good, thick, strong and powerful with his snaps. Ball moves and his smooth.
  • Koby Walsh, who recently committed to UCLA as a preferred walk on, handled pressure very well and could have won the whole thing
  • Curtis Hernandez might just be the smoothest Long Snapper in the class of 2016. Definitely a sleeper of that class right now. Good upside.

Ross Reiter left no doubt he was the best 2018 Long Snapper in attendance. I timed him in the low .6s and he has an excellent spiral on his ball. Very catchable. If he can get his eyes through each time, have fun out there and get set, he will be a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper by XXVIII.

  • Brendan Bentley had waves of brilliance, when he is on…he is really on. Needs to focus heavily on making sure he gets both of his hands on the ball and THEN snaps.
  • Charles DeRosier was very consistent and has done a great job of improving over the years.
  • Kyle Petrucci has major upside and when he trusts his form, he will punish the punter.

Simon Samarzich had a great day in CA. He moves well on his feet and can snap the ball back in the .7s. If he pushes himself a bit more with his Long Snapping, he could be one of the best ever. Consistency will be key by XXVIII in May.

  • Nathan Weneta is right on the cusp of greatness. He is growing by the second and might be the fastest running Long Snapper in his class. Kid flies through agility drills.

  • Ryan Aguilar has tons of upside and could be one of the greats
  • Dylan Black showed good poise and he has some solid speed on the ball.

TOP 2020 LONG SNAPPERS:

I was equally impressed with three 8th grade Long Snappers in attendance: Aaron Estrada, Kameron Hawkins and AJ Laux. All are working with great form and are handling pressure well. Definitely keep an eye on these three over the next couple of years.

KEY POINTS:

  • My rankings are NOT done just from The Rubio Target
  • My rankings are NOT done from some mathematical formula.
  • My rankings ARE done by me and only me. That is why they take a good amount of time. (Think of it this way, it takes MONTHS to build a Rolls Royce but only hours to build an average car)
  • My rankings are based off of this blog I wrote about what makes a Long Snapper great.
  • If you would like anything added to your profile page, simply email me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) the information and consider it done.
  • All Long Snappers are ranked after their first fall camp of their freshman year in high school.

A Long Snapper has the ability to adjust their ranking anytime I see them LIVE, not on video.

FBU TOP GUN RECAP

Over 60 Long Snappers came out to the FBU TOP GUN camp in Ohio to compete against each other for spots to the FBU 7th & 8th All-Star games along with the granddaddy of them all, the US ARMY ALL-AMERICAN BOWL in San Antonio, TX.

TOP GUN 2015

On the first day, the two best Long Snappers in attendance, John Shannon (’16, IL) and Johnny Den Bleyker (’16, CA) were chosen to battle for the first All-American spot. They went head to head on The Rubio Target to see who would be the first to five. These two didn’t disappoint with both scoring on each snap. Eventually, John Shannon couldn’t be beat and earned the first All-American spot.

Jacob Zuhr FBU

For the youth, four 2020 Long Snappers were chosen to battle. Kameron Hawkins (CA), Jacob Zuhr (FL), Jackson Worthen (KY and Zane McCracken (GA) competed for one spot for the FBU All-Star game. The snaps were crisp and all did very well but the best of the best on this day was Jacob Zuhr and he was selected to be an FBU All-Star!

On day two of the FBU TOP GUN camp, the Long Snappers were taken through several competitions involving speed, accuracy and athleticism. After two days of charting, the top four 2016 Long Snappers were Jake Cesear (CA), Geron Eatherly (TX), Ben Wyatt (NC) and Johnny Den Bleyker (CA). Geron Eatherly battled Ben Wyatt to start off the finals and both did very well but Eatherly proved to be too much for Wyatt.

Next up was Jake Cesear against Johnny Den Bleyker. Both started slow but then it heated up quickly with Den Bleyker coming out on top. Snaps were crisp and on target for both Long Snappers.

Army All-Americans 2015

Army All-Americans Johnny Den Bleyker and John Shannon

The finals was Eatherly vs Den Bleyker. One of these two would be the final US ARMY ALL-AMERICAN Long Snapper. These two Long Snappers did not disappoint with both averaging in the low .7s with the ball being right on target. In the end, Den Bleyker proved his dominance and earned the spot.

For the 2020 Long Snappers, the final four to compete for the last spot were Kameron Hawkins (CA), Zane McCracken (GA), Michael Bastuga (IN) and Jackson Worthen (KY). It came down to Hawkins vs Worthen in the finals with Worthen being nails and earning the spot. I was VERY impressed with this group of incoming 8th graders. The future is bright with Rubio Long Snapping! (You should see the form on these kids!)

Congratulations to all of the Long Snappers in attendance and I wanted to give a couple shootouts to some of the guys that really stood out in my eyes….
