It really is OK to be a fan – give it a try sometime

Here is an article I wrote for my local paper, The Lewiston Tribune, that was published today and I thought you might embrace….

Recently, I attended a Seahawks game with some very good friends of mine. The atmosphere was electric in the stadium and within my group. It was a good time for everyone – unless of course you happened to be a fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

One member of the group I was with really caught my eye, and my heart. He has been a fan of the Seahawks for his whole 23 years of life. He never has played football. He has a very common job in the valley. He graduated from the local high school. He has a girlfriend. He is your average man, but he is also a fan, and he was at his first game.

The night before the game began, he was ready for it to begin. It was like watching a child the night before Christmas. My friend’s anxiousness was infectious. All he could talk about on the ride over was the game and how he “was ready!” He’s a fan.

The day of the game, he vaulted out of bed and wanted to get to the stadium immediately. It didn’t even matter to him that the gates wouldn’t even open for several hours. He was ready. He’s a fan.

At the game, his excitement was off the charts. His being a fan was, to sum it up, awesome to watch.

He watched each play as though there would be an exam at the conclusion of the game. He yelled, respectfully, at the refs when they blew a call. He high-fived. He screamed. He cheered. He wondered out loud how people had the audacity to leave the game early – even though the game was completely out of hand. He’s a fan.

Being a fan had built his hopes up for years. Being a fan had made him travel for hours upon hours to the game. Being a fan had got him to the stadium. Being a fan gave him something. Being a fan had driven him to this point. Being a fan would make his day, his week, his month, his year, maybe even his life, whole. He’s a fan.

Watching him made me wonder. Is he over the top? Is his behavior “normal?”

My friend is perhaps a little over the top, but I believe being a fan should be encouraged.

It is always talked about how much sports can do for the athlete; what about what sports can do for the fan?

Being a fan has given my friend, and others, drive, motivation, desire and hope for years. That is what sports can do.

It is OK to allow yourself to be a fan. Encourage your children to be fans. Show them the proper way and lead the way. Being a fan is just as much a part of the game as the players are in sports.

It’s OK to get “really into” a team. It’s OK to show your pride by wearing a jersey. It’s great to feel the ecstasy when your team does well or the pain when they don’t. That is life, sports are life and being a fan is a part of sports.

Be a fan. Cheer. Cry. Yell. Scream. Wonder. Anticipate. Be a fan.

Maybe one day, someone will be a fan of you.

Rubio Long Snapper Wyatt Tucker Smith Picks Up Offer from Central Arkansas!

Rubio

Rubio Long Snapper Wyatt Tucker Smith (MS, JC/2014) has picked up a full scholarship offer from Central Arkansas!

This is Wyatt’s second offer with his first being from Troy a month back. Wyatt is a great Long Snapper and person. Here is what his profile evaluation says…

Wyatt is just flat out great! He is built, easily, like a D1 Long Snapper. He snaps like one, he runs like one and he looks like one. He is ready now. Snaps a nice, smooth ball with some great strength behind it. Very impressive to watch him snap the ball. Great attitude and continuously working to get better. Tell him to do something and just consider it done. Great attitude.

Congratulations once again to Wyatt Tucker Smith!

Lesson with NFL Free Agent Evan Jacobsen

Rubio

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Evan Jacobsen came out to Lewiston, ID to get some fine tuning to be ready for an NFL team to call.

Evan started for four years at the University of New Mexico and did a fantastic job while playing for the Lobos. They were, let’s just say, not the greatest team in the world, so Evan was able to snap A LOT of punts. He performed well at his NFL Pro Day and was selected for an All-Star game during his senior year.

Immediately I noticed that Evan has really transformed his body. He is down to a very, very solid 242 lbs and stands at 6 feet tall. He is lean and muscular with his athleticism greatly increased since his final game at New Mexico. As per the standard for an NFL Long Snapper, he showed great accuracy and consistency. His ball is very catchable and has good speed. You don’t have to move at all to catch his snap and that is what the NFL wants to see in their Long Snappers. His blocking is good and he stays low. Very solid overall two days for Evan.

Rubio Long Snapper Blake Ferguson (GA, ’15) Commits to LSU!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Blake Ferguson (GA, ’15) has committed to LSU!

Ferguson was offered by LSU this summer and that made him the earliest offer ever for a Long Snapper. Blake is obviously an incredible Long Snapper with text book form. He has great size, an amazing attitude and just rips the ball back to the punter. LSU got a great one in Blake!

Blake will be replacing older brother Reid at LSU when he graduates.

Head Coach Les Miles has basically just locked himself in almost a decade of great snaps! Congratulations once again to Blake and the Ferguson family. Geaux Tigers!

Rubio Long Snapping Tip: How to Snap in the Rain

After about 50 inquiries, all revolving around possible rainy games this weekend, I thought it was time I just made it public for everyone.

Here is how you snap in the rain….

1. A rainy game usually means the referee will have a towel with him to try and keep the ball dry. If he doesn’t have one, be a pal and make sure he does AND continue to ensure he always has a dry towel throughout the game.

2. When you go into punt and/or pat, get up to the line and get your feet set IMMEDIATELY.

3. Then, AS SOON AS THE REFEREE PUTS THE BALL DOWN, grab it with your dominant hand. Getting a solid grip with your dominant hand will be key to snapping a wet ball.

4. The next step is simply making sure you keep your form stays the exact same. The weather should not, and will not, impact your form. The snapping motion should be, and will be, the same.

5. The final aspect of the snap is key…MAKE SURE you follow through and I mean really follow through. Pretend you are handing the ball to the punter. Yes, you need to block and/or get down field, but your MOST IMPORTANT job in a rainy game, or not a rainy game for that matter, is to SNAP THE BALL! Remember, you are a Long Snapper….not a long blocker and not a long runner. Your main job is to snap the ball…perfectly.

6. Have fun in the rain men! Make me proud and I will see you in the fall and in Vegas!!!

How to Contact the Shockley Family

As we all know, Rubio Long Snapping lost a member of it’s family yesterday when Scott Shockley passed away.

The outpouring of condolences have been amazing and I am truly seeing just how much of a family Rubio Long Snapping has become. From Twitter and Facebook alone, the support for the Shockley family is huge but many are asking what else they can do for the family.

I spoke with Scott’s father this morning and he said if anyone would like to send personal condolences, please send them by email or personal mail to:

Rubio Long Snapping Family….UNITE!!!!

A while back I wrote about Rubio Long Snapper Scott Shockley and his battle with cancer. Shockley is a Long Snapper that graduated in 2012 and is currently in college at the University of Auburn. In high school, he was a three sport athlete who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in his right femur in May 2011.

He has had his ups and downs, but seems to be having some pretty tough times right now (as you will be able to note below) and I want to lift his spirits.

How did I end up in Lewiston, ID?

I have been asked that question, and I’m not even exaggerating, well over a thousand times. It is, by far, the most common question I get from Long Snappers, parents & coaches.

My answer is simple: a beautiful woman. I “met” Jolie several years back (when and how we met will all come out in the movie “RUBIO“) and loved where she lived, so done. I moved as my job allowed me to relocate.

This post is not about Idaho, it is about Jolie. I just wanted to take a minute away from Long Snapping, just for a quick second:), to wish her a very Happy Anniversary! She definitely makes me a better man.

Rubio Long Snapper Liam McCullough Picks Up Another Offer!

Rubio Long Snapper Liam McCullough, aTOP 12 member, has been offered another full scholarship to Michigan St!

Just yesterday, Liam was offered a full scholarship to the University of Wisconsin so he has quite a 24 hour span. If Liam was to choose Michigan St. he would follow in Rubio Long Snapper Taybor Pepper’s shoes when he graduates.

Liam has been with Rubio Long Snapping for two years and has been dominant during that time. He has been snapping D1 speeds for quite some time now and, recently, has transformed his body into D1 size as well. The sky is the limit for Liam. He is big, snaps extremely well and is very coachable.

Congratulations once again to Liam and his family!

All-American Team

Starting this year, Rubio Long Snapping and Chris Sailer Kicking will be choosing an All-American Team!

We will be choosing 4 High School and 4 College All-Americans. We will also be choosing a Most Improved Kicker, Punter and Long Snapper for the year as well.

One of the best parts about these awards, besides the honor itself, is that they will be announced on Friday, January 17th in Las Vegas. Yup, that is the day before the world’s largest kicking, punting and Long Snapping event and everyone will be on hand for the ceremony.

Also, in Vegas on that same night, Herbalife 24 will be announcing the Chris Rubio Award and Chris Sailer Award for top High School Long Snapper and Kicker of the Year!

Therefore, instead of just a handful of lucky families being able to see the Chris Rubio and Chris Sailer Award presentations, there will now be hundreds. The awards ceremony will take place in a ballroom at the JW Marriott with the front tables being reserved for the finalists and their families, while the rest of the ballroom will be open seating and free to the public. Imagine the NFL draft in your head….that is what this will look like in Vegas.

With no further adieu, here are the Rubio Long Snapping and Chris Sailer Kicking Pre-Season All-Americans….
