Update on Delta and Veteran’s Day Incident

r4ubio5As I am sure you know, I had a little issue with Delta a couple days ago. I was upset about it and, gathering from all of your comments to me through Twitter, Facebook and the blog, you were all a little steamed as well.

Here is what happened after the blog was made public (please note: I am someone who, when gets going, REALLY gets going)….

  1. On Monday, I sent it directly to their Twitter account, their Delta Assist Twitter account, I emailed them off their comments section on their website and their comments section from the CEO’s section of their website.
  2. On Tuesday, I received an email from Delta saying that the CEO’s, Richard H. Anderson, personal secretary would be calling very soon and they were upset with what occurred.
  3. Later Tuesday, Delta’s CEO’s personal secretary called me (trust me, you could tell this was the head man’s right hand assistant on the horn), left me a message and gave me here direct line to call back. I called back and here is what happened…
  • Richard had read the blog through my emails and was very disturbed with what had occurred. The secretary then proceeded to say Richard wanted to pay me back for the baggage fees for the retired soldier (I said a very nice gesture but, instead, donate that money to the Wounded Warrior Project)
  • I found out that although, it is true, they don’t offer retired servicemen/servicewomen free bags, the check-in staff at every airport has the right to make a judgment call to offer free luggage and “this was the biggest no-brainer of all time
  • They do offer currently serving servicemen/servicewomen free bags AND UP TO EIGHT family members, flying with them, to have free baggage as well. I thought that was pretty darn impressive.
  • Richard was moved by the blog and is very, very sorry this had occurred and they would be contacting their agents throughout the country to let them know how to handle this from now on, that they do have a judgement call and to use a bit more common sense.

All in all, even though I am upset the original incident occurred, I am very impressed with how Delta, and especially Richard H. Anderson, stepped up in the end.

Side Note: Don’t let anyone ever tell you one person can’t get something done.Double Side Note: I, in no way, feel this was a one man situation and, I KNOW, many, many members of the Rubio Long Snapping family made the final outcome of the situation, a reality. Thank you.

What’s the deal? And on Veteran’s Day!

I fly a lot. Everyone knows this. On those flights, I see tons of things, some good and some bad. What I just saw, baffled me.

I just checked in for my Delta (FYI: I love Delta and they love me, but what I just experienced left a very bad taste in my mouth) flight from Dallas, TX to Salt Lake City, UT to Lewiston, ID. As I am checking, I notice an Army man with a service dog next to me. Pretty cool in general, but even better when it is Veteran’s Day and you can look over to give them a nod or verbalize a thank you.

Anyways, I am checking in my three bags and I hear the guy ask the attendant if he gets a free bag with his Army ID? She said, “are you currently serving?” His response was “No, I am retired.” Her response was “Oh, I’m sorry, only currently serving military men and women get free bags and how would you like to cover the cost of the bag?”

First of all, why only current servicemen and women? If this guy is retired, that means he has gone through the whole deal and put in his “time.” This needs to be changed.

Second, on Veteran’s Day? Seriously, this aspect of their baggage service needs to be rectified, but how about bending the rules a bit on a major holiday HONORING these great men and women that serve(d) our country?

Third, I covered the cost of his bag, said thank you very much and walked to my flight.

Over a month ago, I announced a Limerick Contest for a FREE admission to the 12th Annual National Snapping Event in Las Vegas. The object of the contest was to create a funny, creative limerick that had to do with Long Snapping.

The response to this contest was amazing and even surprised me. I actually received almost 200 entries! Well done gentleman!

Alright, enough waiting, the winner, and this was very tough to choose, is…..

It really is OK to be a fan – give it a try sometime

r4ubio5

Here is an article I wrote for my local paper, The Lewiston Tribune, that was published today and I thought you might embrace….

Recently, I attended a Seahawks game with some very good friends of mine. The atmosphere was electric in the stadium and within my group. It was a good time for everyone – unless of course you happened to be a fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

One member of the group I was with really caught my eye, and my heart. He has been a fan of the Seahawks for his whole 23 years of life. He never has played football. He has a very common job in the valley. He graduated from the local high school. He has a girlfriend. He is your average man, but he is also a fan, and he was at his first game.

The night before the game began, he was ready for it to begin. It was like watching a child the night before Christmas. My friend’s anxiousness was infectious. All he could talk about on the ride over was the game and how he “was ready!” He’s a fan.

The day of the game, he vaulted out of bed and wanted to get to the stadium immediately. It didn’t even matter to him that the gates wouldn’t even open for several hours. He was ready. He’s a fan.

At the game, his excitement was off the charts. His being a fan was, to sum it up, awesome to watch.

He watched each play as though there would be an exam at the conclusion of the game. He yelled, respectfully, at the refs when they blew a call. He high-fived. He screamed. He cheered. He wondered out loud how people had the audacity to leave the game early – even though the game was completely out of hand. He’s a fan.

Being a fan had built his hopes up for years. Being a fan had made him travel for hours upon hours to the game. Being a fan had got him to the stadium. Being a fan gave him something. Being a fan had driven him to this point. Being a fan would make his day, his week, his month, his year, maybe even his life, whole. He’s a fan.

Watching him made me wonder. Is he over the top? Is his behavior “normal?”

My friend is perhaps a little over the top, but I believe being a fan should be encouraged.

It is always talked about how much sports can do for the athlete; what about what sports can do for the fan?

Being a fan has given my friend, and others, drive, motivation, desire and hope for years. That is what sports can do.

It is OK to allow yourself to be a fan. Encourage your children to be fans. Show them the proper way and lead the way. Being a fan is just as much a part of the game as the players are in sports.

It’s OK to get “really into” a team. It’s OK to show your pride by wearing a jersey. It’s great to feel the ecstasy when your team does well or the pain when they don’t. That is life, sports are life and being a fan is a part of sports.

Be a fan. Cheer. Cry. Yell. Scream. Wonder. Anticipate. Be a fan.

Maybe one day, someone will be a fan of you.

Rubio Long Snapping is happy to announce that Highlight Videos will now be available for purchase for ALL of the Rubio Long Snapping Camps this spring and in Vegas! This is an incredible opportunity and will only be available to a limited number of Long Snappers, kickers and punters that reserve their video.  They are offering a rate of $150 for a video.  Here is how it will work:

1. You can preegister for this service by e-mailing info@VarsityTape.com with your contact info, which camp you will be attending and, this is important, if you are kicker or Long Snapper. The staff will get back to you, within 24 hours, with further instructions.

2. They are taking a LIMITED number of kickers, punter and Long Snappers. If you are interested, e-mail them immediately.

Below is an example of the videos. I am very impressed with the company and their services. Rubio Long Snapper Wyatt Tucker Smith Picks Up Offer from Central Arkansas!

Rubio

Rubio Long Snapper Wyatt Tucker Smith (MS, JC/2014) has picked up a full scholarship offer from Central Arkansas!

This is Wyatt’s second offer with his first being from Troy a month back. Wyatt is a great Long Snapper and person. Here is what his profile evaluation says…

Wyatt is just flat out great! He is built, easily, like a D1 Long Snapper. He snaps like one, he runs like one and he looks like one. He is ready now. Snaps a nice, smooth ball with some great strength behind it. Very impressive to watch him snap the ball. Great attitude and continuously working to get better. Tell him to do something and just consider it done. Great attitude.

Congratulations once again to Wyatt Tucker Smith!

Lesson with NFL Free Agent Evan Jacobsen

Rubio

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Evan Jacobsen came out to Lewiston, ID to get some fine tuning to be ready for an NFL team to call.

Evan started for four years at the University of New Mexico and did a fantastic job while playing for the Lobos. They were, let’s just say, not the greatest team in the world, so Evan was able to snap A LOT of punts. He performed well at his NFL Pro Day and was selected for an All-Star game during his senior year.

Immediately I noticed that Evan has really transformed his body. He is down to a very, very solid 242 lbs and stands at 6 feet tall. He is lean and muscular with his athleticism greatly increased since his final game at New Mexico. As per the standard for an NFL Long Snapper, he showed great accuracy and consistency. His ball is very catchable and has good speed. You don’t have to move at all to catch his snap and that is what the NFL wants to see in their Long Snappers. His blocking is good and he stays low. Very solid overall two days for Evan.

Ferguson was offered by LSU this summer and that made him the earliest offer ever for a Long Snapper. Blake is obviously an incredible Long Snapper with text book form. He has great size, an amazing attitude and just rips the ball back to the punter. LSU got a great one in Blake!

Blake will be replacing older brother Reid at LSU when he graduates.

Head Coach Les Miles has basically just locked himself in almost a decade of great snaps! Congratulations once again to Blake and the Ferguson family. Geaux Tigers!

Rubio Long Snapping Tip: How to Snap in the Rain

After about 50 inquiries, all revolving around possible rainy games this weekend, I thought it was time I just made it public for everyone.

Here is how you snap in the rain….

1. A rainy game usually means the referee will have a towel with him to try and keep the ball dry. If he doesn’t have one, be a pal and make sure he does AND continue to ensure he always has a dry towel throughout the game.

2. When you go into punt and/or pat, get up to the line and get your feet set IMMEDIATELY.

3. Then, AS SOON AS THE REFEREE PUTS THE BALL DOWN, grab it with your dominant hand. Getting a solid grip with your dominant hand will be key to snapping a wet ball.

4. The next step is simply making sure you keep your form stays the exact same. The weather should not, and will not, impact your form. The snapping motion should be, and will be, the same.

5. The final aspect of the snap is key…MAKE SURE you follow through and I mean really follow through. Pretend you are handing the ball to the punter. Yes, you need to block and/or get down field, but your MOST IMPORTANT job in a rainy game, or not a rainy game for that matter, is to SNAP THE BALL! Remember, you are a Long Snapper….not a long blocker and not a long runner. Your main job is to snap the ball…perfectly.

6. Have fun in the rain men! Make me proud and I will see you in the fall and in Vegas!!!

Happy Ranksgiving to the TOP 12 & EVENT ELITE Long Snappers!

The rankings are completed for ALL Long Snappers that participated in The TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE Camp!

There was some major jumps in the rankings with five new 5 Star Rubio Long Snappers (two were made on the weekend of the camp)!

You can watch the recap of the camp HERE

KEY POINTS:

  • These rankings were extremely difficult as everyone is so solid. MANY factors went into the overall rankings.
  • My rankings are NOT done just from the Target
  • My rankings are NOT done from some mathematical formula.
  • My rankings ARE done by me and only me. That is why I am at all my camps.
  • My rankings are based off of this blog I wrote about what makes a Long Snapper great.
  • If you would like anything added to your profile page, simply email me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) the information and consider it done.
  • All Long Snappers are ranked after their first fall camp of their freshman year in high school.

A Long Snapper has the ability to adjust their ranking anytime I see them LIVE, not on video.
