Where Are They Now? Casey Hales

AYLZIQMRELKJHRW.20050711204727For the first installment of “Where Are They Now?” I thought it only appropriate that I start with Rubio Long Snapper Casey Hales. You see, Casey is the first Long Snapper I ever worked with! He was/is a little surfer kid from Orange County, CA with a great attitude that played his college football at Duke!

Check out what has been going on with Rubio Long Snapper Casey Hales….

1.    What is your current occupation? – Medical Device Sales, specializing in spine surgery.

2. Where do you live? San Francisco, CA

3. Married/ Kids? No

4. What is your fondest memory of your time playing college football? My favorite experience was traveling with the team on road games.

Whenever we would fly it would be on chartered planes, with a police escort, the way it should be. My fondest memory specifically would have to be playing at FSU my true freshman year. I was a little bit on the chubby side, and these really aggressive fans started taunting me right above our sideline. They were screaming and pointing at me trying to get my attention “Hey Chunk, do the truffle shuffle!” Haha! Classic line from Goonies. They repeated this over an over all game. That always reminded me how special it is to play college football, especially when playing in front of 90,000 hostile fans, against the teams I grew up watching on T.V.

5.    If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snappers, what would it be? SET GOALS, and have fun! Make sure you are putting in the work that is going to get you the results you want. It’s easy to be comfortable when you think you are “good enough” either in HS or College. Keep raising the bar for yourself and be accountable for your progress.

6.    If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snapping PARENTS, what would it be? Be consistent. Try not to get too high or too low based on a games outcome or 1 snapping performance. If you are consistently being supportive that is enough.

7. When was the last time you snapped a ball and for what reason? This past weekend on the beach. I was tossing the rock with  some friends and it just happened.

 8.   If you could go back and play football in college again, would you go to the same school or a different one? Why? I would go back to Duke in a heart beat. I wouldn’t trade my teammates or the Duke experience for anything. Plus I was one of the most active long snappers (punts) in the country.

9 .Any regrets during college? Something you wish you had done or maybe hadn’t? The only thing I wish I had was a redshirt year to develop more. I wasn’t the most physically gifted and could have used another year in the weight room to adjust to the college game and speed.

10.   What tremendous thing have you been a part of or experienced since you graduated?

 Besides Rubio Long Snapping….

After graduation I was one of 10 Duke Athletes selected to participate in the Coach for College Program in Southern Vietnam. This was a 6-week Student-Athlete Program that allowed us to promote the benefits of higher education and athletics. This was a special experience because it allowed me to connect my love for coaching/teaching with the lessons I learned playing football at Duke. We created a multifunctional sports court and got to work with some great kids.

TOP 2017 LONG SNAPPERS:

  • Thomas Fletcher left no doubt at all that he is the best 2017 Long Snapper in the country. Handles pressure as well as anyone I have ever had and has zero wasted movement. He could snap in college right now and he is only heading into his junior year.
  • Mitch Hall was excellent all weekend and he is beginning to start with a lot of confidence. Incredible form.
  • Nate Durham shows great power and speed on the ball.
  • Austin Reeves is a Long Snapper that could take the top spot within the year. Silent, but deadly.
  • Shiloh Mast is really let the ball fly. Size will be key for him.
  • Joe Calcagno is on the cusp of absolute dominance. Watch him closely over the next year.
  • Jake Pagel is strong and consistent. Watch him.
  • Matthew Smith is a flat out stud. Lots of potential.
  • Koltin Anderson is a very strong Long Snapper with tons of raw power.
  • Ryan Culbertson never disappoints and can snap at the next level.
  • Kyle O’Connor might be one of the most accurate Long Snappers in his class.
  • Kyle Gibbs was very impressive. He is very raw and could be one of the greats.
  • Devin Noth has all of the tools to be one of the best ever.
  • Jake Hess is coming along nicely and headed in the right direction. Consistency of speed will be key.

Notables: Kobe Paez, Paul Lawless, Noah Rodriguez-Trammel, Chris Clore, Matt Baldeck, Gabe Hantz, Colin Scott, Dylan Castro, Jacob Potter

  • My rankings are NOT done just from The Rubio Target
  • My rankings are NOT done from some mathematical formula.
  • My rankings ARE done by me and only me. That is why they take a good amount of time. (Think of it this way, it takes MONTHS to build a Rolls Royce but only hours to build an average car)
  • My rankings are based off of this blog I wrote about what makes a Long Snapper great.
  • If you would like anything added to your profile page, simply email me ([email protected]) the information and consider it done.
  • All Long Snappers are ranked after their first fall camp of their freshman year in high school.

A Long Snapper has the ability to adjust their ranking anytime I see them LIVE, not on video.

Rubio Long Snapper Travis Arroyo Honored by the State of Texas

Yesterday, Rubio Long Snapper Travis Arroyo (2016, TX) was honored by the state of Texas at the state capitol in Austin. Yes, the entire state! You see the Texas government is so proud of Travis (many of you probably have heard me call him Goodman because he reminds me of John Goodman) that they created a resolution for him (please see below) highlighting his academic and athletic achievements. Yesterday, Goodman received an “Outstanding Young Texan Award” honoring him during the 84th Texas Legislature April 30, 2015. Texas State Capitol Austin, Texas

To say I am proud of Goodman would be an understatement. Congratulations to Goodman and his whole family.

KEY POINTS:

  • Marco Cadavieco is, easily, one of the smoothest Long Snappers in his class. Love his drive and attitude.

2015 FBU Camps

For the second year in a row, Rubio Long Snapping and Chris Sailer Kicking will be teaming up with FBU to run their specialists portions of their camps. FBU is the world’s largest football training service and has hired us to handle their Long Snapping section. It is an honor and we are proud to do it again. It is a top notch organization that benefits countless athletes across the country.

This year, Rubio Long Snapping will be running more camps in order to hit more areas around the country. To be able to do this, I will only be at certain locations. The locations in italics are camps that I will personally be at this spring and summer. Those not in italics, will have two senior Rubio Long Snapping instructors in attendance (staff members that have been with me for well over 30 camps). They will follow the same format as myself and report directly to FBU and yours truly.

We will be choosing the two Long Snappers that will participate in the US ARMY ALL-AMERICAN BOWL at the FBU TOP GUN CAMP in Ohio on July 16-18. Rubio Long Snapping and Chris Sailer Kicking will also be selecting the East Bay Youth All-American for the Class of 2019 (Freshman All-American Bowl) and 2020 (8th Grade All-American Bowl) at the FBU TOP GUN CAMP in Ohio on July 16-18. You MUST be invited to the TOP GUN camp by performing well at one of the regional camps prior to the TOP GUN Camp. Bottom line, you will have to do well at one of the camps, that the Chris Sailer Kicking staff  is in attendance at, to pick up an invite from myself and/or one of my senior instructors.

You will need a code to register for an FBU camp, and since you are a Rubio Long Snapper, you will have it right now: CR15. Use this code to register now for an FBU camp as they will sell out.

  • April 24-25, Central Florida
  • May 1-2, North Carolina
  • May 1-2, Dallas
  • May 15-16, New Jersey
  • May 22-23, Atlanta
  • May 29-30, South Florida
  • June 5-6, Chicago

Article & Rankings from the Rubio Long Snapping Spring Camp in CA

The rankings are completed for ALL Long Snappers that participated in the Rubio Long Snapping Spring Camp in CA!

Long Snappers came out from CA, NV, AZ, WY, WA, UT and CO to get the best instruction and most exposure for Long Snappers in the country.

Next ranking opportunity will be at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in TX on March 15th.

Hoffman, Harrison

Harrison Hoffman

The overall winner of the camp was Harrison Hoffman. Harrison is headed to the Air Force Academy and will do great there. He is a smooth Long Snapper with a frame that will easily be able to pack on the pounds in the coming years. Great kid and always learning

TOP 2015 LONG SNAPPERS

  • Jordan Ober snaps so the ball is crisp, tight and moves quickly back to the punter. I would love to see him lower his butt just a tad to get even more speed on the ball. That’s a very simple fix that can be adjusted in less than a week. I also love his attitude.
  • Cody Block is one of the most athletic Long Snappers in his class. He moves very well on his feet, no matter what he is doing. His hands are extremely quick. He gets the ball out of the gate as well as anyone else in the country. I would love to see him focus on getting fully set and making sure he is going back instead of just straight up. This will increase the speed of the ball and keep him in the low .7s to even .6s over the course of a day.
  • Jonathan Goldstein is built long and his form has really progressed over the years. He has a frame that can put up some very good weight over the next year. Goldstein uses his whole body really well and he can snap the ball in the .6s at times on punts. He needs to make sure his consistency with that speed is locked down and that he is getting the same release point with all of his snaps. This kid can really snap. Watch him.
  • Peter Comaroto‘s form is excellent and he is always improving. Getting his footwork down and continuing to build his body will help in the long run. It is fun to watch this kid snap. UMASS is lucky to have him in the fall.
  • Richard Wilcox is fantastic when loose. The less thinking he does, the better he is. I love when he drives his elbows and creates some good whip and speed on the ball. He is built thick so he will have to really make sure he stays loose and doesn’t become too bulky which will slow the ball down. He has a great attitude.
  • Matt Foley is snapping the ball with confidence and is sure of himself. He looked good. I REALLY just need to see him focus on one snap and let it fly out of his hands full speed. Once he does that, I want it EVERY SINGLE TIME. He is as close as possible to a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper. This kid is good.

Notables: Scott Stevens, Jack Dixon, JT Bale

TOP 2016 LONG SNAPPERS

  • Johnny Den Bleyker was smooth, strong and fast. Den Bleyker has it all right now. The bigger he gets, the better he will be. Love when he gets fully set. Very dominant at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in CA. UCLA got a good one.
  • Damon Johnson had a great day at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in CA. Gets in a groove and is very dominant. His misses are becoming less and less frequent. Big thing for him is to just snap the ball as hard as he can at all times. Kid is flat out good and he will make a college coach very happy in the next couple of years.
  • Conner Kirkegaard had a much better day at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in CA. When he lets the ball just fly out of his hands, he is exceptional. Controlling his release point will be huge for him gaining accuracy. Speed is right on target. WORK HORSE.
  • Koby Walsh had another great day at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in CA. He is right in the mix with all of the great ones in his class. Now, he needs to lock down the consistency and take it to the next level. Show me he can win a camp and separate himself from those above him. Moves really well on his feet. Body is coming along nicely. I will be testing his blocking and movement a ton at VEGAS XXVI.
  • Jake Cesear – Simple: he gets to about 210 lbs and he will have a scholarship. Reminds me a lot of Rubio Long Snappers Aaron Brewer (Denver Broncos) and Chase Dominguez (Utah). TONS of upside. Kid is almost ready for a scholarship now. SMOOOOOOOOTH.
  • James Workman had another big jump in the rankings and well deserved. Workman is really locking down his consistency and is headed towards one of the greats in his class. The harder he snaps, the better he will be. Lowering his butt will help a bit to gain more speed and power. Kid is filled with potential. Watch him closely at VEGAS XXVI. EVENT ELITE?
  • Donald Reiter is coming along nicely and had a good day at the Rubio Long Snapping camp in CA. Needs to really focus on being as quick as possible going back instead of gradually going up. Very good attitude.

Notables: Jack Haney, Curtis Hernandez, Jacob Mimoun,  Jack Munsey, Andrew Tomlinson, Jared Enrico, Blake Gifford, Fletcher Dilley

TOP 2017 LONG SNAPPERS

  • Thomas Fletcher is just flat out good. Really good. If I was a college coach, I would be looking at this kid VERY, VERY closely right now. The bigger he gets, the better he will be. Just trust me on this, watch him. It would not surprise me to see him win VEGAS XXVI.
  • Koltin Anderson did really well at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in CA. He is snapping the ball with confidence and good power. Like to see him continue to work on eliminating the hitch while still snapping full power. Strong bodied. Great attitude.
  • Alex Michaelsen is snapping the ball with good power and strength. Needs to make sure he is not over-gripping the ball so he keeps his spiral on lock down. Keeping his back flat will help with overall speed and power. VERY good potential and definitely one to watch.
  • Devin Noth of Colorado did well. Plain and simple, the bigger Noth gets, the better he will be. Kid has very good form and is snapping the ball well. He is snapping the ball with very good power and accuracy. Kid is flat out good. Keep a very close eye on him over the next two years and beyond.

Notables: Joey Tanaka, Noah Rodriguez-Trammell, Caleb Laver

TOP 2018 LONG SNAPPERS & FUTURE STARS

  • Ross Reiter left no doubt he was the best in his class and it wasn’t even close. Kid is strong, has a great attitude and snaps with power.
  • Brendan Bentley showed QUICK improvement in a very short amount of time. Body is strong and his form is good. Loved what I saw at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in CA. Snaps the ball with good power. Like to see him sit down a bit more and make sure he is leaning back. VERY good potential and you should really keep a close eye on him.
  • Simon Samarzich continues to just plug along and dominate his age group in CA. VEGAS XXVI will be big to prove he is dominant at the national level. Wouldn’t put money against him showing up and snapping bullets.

KEY POINTS:

  • My rankings are NOT done just from The Rubio Target

What Coaches Will Ask a Recruit

Everyone always wants to know the key questions a coach will ask their son/daughter when they are getting recruited and the truth is, it’s the basics…

  • “So, what’s up?”
  • “How is school?”
  • “How is the weather?”
  • “How are your grades?”
  • “Would you be interested in coming to _____________ to get your degree and play some football?”

Right now, you are thinking “this is a joke, Rubio.” No, it is not. The coach is not looking to solve the world’s problems by speaking to your kid. He is simply trying to see if your kid is a moron or not.

Seriously.

They just want to hear the athlete speak, make sure he/she is not an idiot and someone that can operate on their own without mommy/daddy speaking for them.

So, you want to prep your kid? Just speak to them.

5 Things a Parents Should Be During the Recruiting Process….

1. SUPPORTIVE!
Your child will need you more than ever during this period. This will be extra challenging as they are a teen and know it all. Therefore, you must remain supportive and on their team. Guide them in the right direction but let them walk the path.

2. ORGANIZED!
There will be tons of pamphlets, camps, emails, directions and communication. A teen usually has too much on their plate to manage it all. This is where an adult’s organization skills can hopefully relieve some pressure off the athlete.

3. A ROLE PLAYER!
Practice with your child the conversations he/she will have with the coaches and recruiting coordinators. It looks terrible when a coach asks an athlete a question and the athlete looks to mommy or daddy for the answer. Even worse is if mommy or daddy simply answers for the athlete.

4. OPEN-MINDED!
Not every athlete is going to attend the top D1 schools in the country. If your son wants to play, there are literally hundreds of schools out there with teams. Find several that aren’t necessarily on your radar and embrace them. There is something out there for everyone.

5. IN THE BACKGROUND!
The coach doesn’t want to talk to you. Trust me, I speak to them all the time. They are recruiting the athlete, NOT you. Like I have said a hundred times, when you (the parent) were dating your spouse, did you want to date them or their parents? Exactly. Stay in the background and let your son/daughter be a big boy/girl. This goes for interviews with sports writers, as well. Let the athlete speak for themselves.
