Form Letter to get Long Snappers on Post-Season Lists

End of the football season is upon many of us and with that, comes local papers, websites, leagues and states awards presented to all of the top athletes that played this season. I will highlight all because, as you know, the Long Snapper is not always on these lists. This, of course, is simply absurd to me since there is no way you can have a kicker and/or punter earn an award without having a Long Snapper also earn one. As we all know, the ball doesn’t magically appear to the punter and/or holder.

To clear this up and really push it this year, I am creating a template for you to send to your local TV station, newspaper, league, city, district, state officials, etc.

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is to request that a Long Snapper be added to the ___________________ (All-League, All-City, All-District, All-County, All-State, etc) List. I know the Long Snapper has been left off in the past, but that really shouldn’t be the case any longer. You see, if you are choosing a kicker and punter for this list, you definitely should have a Long Snapper on it as they start the play that the kicker and/or punter finish. It’s simple, without a Long Snapper, the kicker and/or punter simply can’t do their job.

Not having a Long Snapper on your list would be just as bad as not having lineman. Think about it, no doubt you would have a QB or RB on your list but imagine how great they would be if they didn’t have a great line? They would have some major issues throwing and/or running the ball. The lineman do a great deal for the QB and/or the RB. They should get noticed on your list, and they do. Now, it is time to notice the Long Snapper, the person that starts the game winning kick or game changing punt. It is time.

I know an argument can be “Oh, but we really don’t know what to look for in a Long Snapper to actually judge them for our lists.” Good point but I am sure you get many points of views from high school coaches that can help mold your decision. Also, there is a company that travels the country that works just with Long Snappers that would be more than happy to help in order to get the Long Snappers the recognition they deserve. Rubio Long Snapping is this company. They see more Long Snappers than anyone in the country and have had over 1,000 of their Long Snappers go to college/NFL.

I really hope this email sticks with you and is able to get Long Snappers on your list. They deserve it and it is time.

From a Rubio Long Snapping Parent…..

A long time Rubio Long Snapping parent asked me if they could write a blog for everyone to read. Here it is….

I have wanted to write about our experience with Rubio Long Snapping for years because there are things that I wish someone had pointed out/told me when we were first getting started.

Our son is a Rubio Long Snapper. He isn’t just a long snapper he is a Rubio Long Snapper and he is now playing Divison 1 college football on full scholarship.

From the time our son was in 1st grade he had 3 goals:

He wanted to make the Varsity Football Team at his high school as a sophomore – we are a 6A school so making Varsity as a sophomore is a big deal. (He achieved this goal)
He wanted to play Division 1 college football (He achieved this goal)
He wanted a full scholarship (He achieved this goal)
He wanted to play in the NFL (He is working toward this goal)

We have always encouraged his passion for the game and sent him to all different types of camps – full contact as well as skills and we have had him in sports performance training since 4th grade.

He started long snapping in 7th grade. His head football coach asked anyone who thought they could snap a ball to try out for the position and he won it. While we “knew” that he snapped the ball for punts, extra points and field goals, we really didn’t have any idea it was an actual “position” so to speak. We thought it was just “something extra” he did in addition to playing Linebacker and Fullback.

The summer before his freshman year in high school he came and asked us to go to a long snapping camp and my husband and I were like – a what??? What in the heck is that? We were in the process of signing him up with a college recruiting service and I asked the representative if he knew of any long snapping camps and he recommended Rubio. The college recruiting service cost us a lot of money and didn’t end up doing anything for us in terms of recruiting BUT it will forever be worth the money because of their recommendation of Rubio Long Snapping.

I got on the computer and found out that Rubio was doing fall camps in various locations but the one closest to us was already set up. I emailed Rubio and was able to get our son on the waiting list and – eventually – into the camp.

This camp was our first exposure to the ins and outs of long snapping and to Rubio. While at the camp, my husband saw another father there that he knew. The father

wanted to share all of his knowledge with us and informed us that we shouldn’t limit ourselves to doing only Rubio camps – we should do ALL of the different ranking camps and get our son out there so he could have as much exposure as possible. Basically he was saying not to put all of our eggs in one basket. We listened politely to everything he said but at the end of the camp I told my husband that I didn’t agree – that I really liked this Rubio guy and how he ran his camp and our son seemed to respond to him and that was that. We never looked back and never put him anywhere else and have never been sorry about that. Interestingly enough, this other long snapper never ended up playing college ball and his father approached my husband here in town after our son received his scholarship to tell us how wrong he had been and if he had it to do over again, he would’ve stuck with Rubio like we did. He spent so much time running from one camp to the other that his son never had any consistency in terms of critique or what he needed to do to be the best that he could be.

SO WHY NOT PUT YOUR KID AT ALL THE DIFFERENT RANKING CAMPS?

Well, there are several reasons for this in my opinion. First, they are extensions of Kicking Camps – not really long snapping camps per se and it is not always the same person doing the evaluations and/or rankings so there is no consistency in what your son is being told to do and/or work on to improve.

Over the years, I can’t even count how many times our son has been approached to train with these other companies or attend their “invite only” camps. They have stalked him on social media, private messages and at different college camps he was attending that they happened to be running. The invited him to their regional camps and their “invitation only” camps (which is pretty much anyone that will pay for it). What they REALLY wanted to do was recruit a Rubio Long Snapper. They will pretty much tell you anything/everything you want to hear to get you to go to their camps but they really don’t do anything for you and your son in the long run – oh yeah – big talk and all but very little contacts and actions. If you look across the board in college football – the vast majority of long snappers come out of Rubio Long Snapping. I’m not telling you that there aren’t some from other companies but – overall – the college coaches trust and rely on Rubio and his evaluations. It doesn’t really matter if you are the #4 ranked long snapper in your class on their site if they are only ranking 30 kids. What, exactly, does that tell a college coach? That you invested your time and money with a company that doesn’t see enough long snappers to truly be an expert in the art form that really is long snapping.

I’ve seen kids go with other companies in addition to Rubio and think that they are somehow going to be chosen for a bowl game that way. That.Isn’t.Going.To.Happen. Let me repeat that – That.Isn’t.Going.To.Happen. Look back through their choices over the years and you can bet that their choices are never kids that train elsewhere. They TELL you that your kid is amazing and has a shot at it just to get your money and have your kid at that camp. Rubio now chooses snappers for 2 different bowl games and that isn’t an accident – he really is the foremost authority on long snappers.

If a “coach” from another long snapping company only tells you and your son how amazing he is and how much this company could do with/for them, they are likely blowing smoke up his (and your) butt. The truth is that every long snapper has things that can be improved. Our son continues to train with Rubio privately once a year and with Finch as many times as we can manage it when he is home for any period of time and he attends the college camp. And guess what? There are still things Rubio has him working on in order to go to the next level – the NFL.

Regardless of which college team is your favorite I don’t think that there is any doubt in anyones mind that Nick Saban is one of the best coaches in college football history. There is a reason that he only uses Rubio Long Snappers – think about that!

RANKINGS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM

This is a tricky one and I will be the first to admit that I didn’t (and still don’t) always agree with Rubio in whoever was ranked above my kid. Now, I didn’t question the STAR rankings of the kids involved, but if there were several kids with the same number of stars – I didn’t always think that the person/people he ranked above my son were better than him. Sometimes I did agree and sometimes I didn’t but what I always DID agree with is whatever he critiqued our son on needing to work on so that is where we put our focus. Concentrating on that is what made our son the long snapper he is today.

If you and your kid don’t like where he is ranked, work on what Rubio says he needs to work on and improve that and then the next time Rubio sees him he will likely move up in the rankings because he fixed, or at the very least improved, that situation.

Or you can go coach shopping and find another company to tell you what you want to hear because they want your money. If they are telling you how awesome you are when Rubio is telling you what you need to work on then I would question their knowledge level. The way I look at it is this – wouldn’t it be “easier” for Rubio to just tell every kid how amazing he is and then write that up after every camp? He doesn’t do

that – he actually pays attention to the kid AT the camp and then goes back and watches their film and gives you detailed information – and he balances that – giving positive affirmations as well as things that need to improve. Ask yourself which “review” a college coach is going to trust – one that only tells you how amazing this kid is or one that is honest and straightforward? I personally prefer to hear the bottom line truth and so does our son. What about you?

AND ANOTHER THING ABOUT RANKINGS

I’ve heard a lot of people complain that their kid should be ranked higher or have more stars when their kid hasn’t been at camps. They complain that Rubio only wants them at the camps so that he can make more money. Two things here:

Rubio can only rank the kid if he SEES the kid. So even if you think your kid is better than John X right now, if your kid isn’t at the camp and John X is and John X is better NOW than the last time Rubio saw your kid then John X is going to jump your kid in the rankings because he can only compare John X NOW to your kid the last time he saw him. This isn’t Rubio moving your kid down in the rankings at all – it is about another kids improvement since the last time he saw him and since he hasn’t seen your kid since then…..well you see how that is?
This is Rubio’s business – his livelihood, his way to support his family so absolutely there is a financial aspect to him doing this. But – I have never been involved with an organization where the owner gives so much back to the kids. If you or your kid texts Rubio, he answers, if you comment on one of his posts on social media – he answers. He is encouraging and funny and supportive of everyone that is part of the Rubio Family – parents and kids and he doesn’t charge a dime for any of that “extra” support. My son started as a true college freshman and his first game was an away game and it was supposed to rain. Although my son was confident in his abilities he was a bit nervous and got in touch with Rubio and guess what Rubio did? He answered him right away and took the time to talk him through everything that needed to happen for our son to be successful. He set him at ease and helped him get out of his head in that minute when it truly mattered. I don’t know any other “long snapping” companies that are that accessible in that way and would’ve taken that time – after business hours – to do that. Do you?

RUBIO FAMILY

Our particular high school class of long snappers was an exceptionally close class and I have heard people from other classes complain that they don’t have that bond that we

had – parents and kids. ANY class can have that bond but you have to have one or more families who are invested in making things happen – lunch together during camps, dinners together after camps staying the same hotel in Vegas and regional camps, etc. Guess what that means? Someone has to step up to the plate and coordinate it all – meaning do the research and keep in contact with everyone. If no one does that then it doesn’t happen.

The other thing I noticed is that all the families in our class were supportive of ALL the boys. There wasn’t any competition EXCEPT on the field. These kids have had a group chat going since they were Event Elite together summer before their Junior Year in high school and Top 12 the summer before their Senior Year and they are going into their (academic) Junior Year in college now and still chatting via group text. If someone was going to turn down an offer, they told the others in their group chat so that the rest of them could reach out to the coach if they were interested in playing for that college. No one “hoarded” that information – they shared contact information for coaches so that they could all achieve their dreams. They were all doing exactly what Rubio taught them to do – building each other up rather than tearing each other down.

Whenever I’ve seen issues between kids in the same class (not friendly competition), you can bet that some adults is egging that on and so if you stop any of that, then you can all have the same closeness up and down the rankings that we had. I can honestly tell you that out of the 5 Start Snappers in our class any one of them could’ve been #1 in the class on any given day. And, out of the parents in our class – we are still close to many of them and keep in touch and keep rooting for each others kids.

Rubio actively encourages these kids to not only be great long snappers but also to be great human beings.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

If your son genuinely wants to play college football don’t be laser focused on whether it is a scholarship or a PWO. I mean, I get it – they all want a full ride but there are still some schools that simply will not bring in a long snapper on scholarship as a true freshman. Don’t make your son feel like a failure that he “only” received PWOs. Long Snapping isn’t like playing QB or RB where the school is going to take at least one player in that position every single year. If they don’t need a long snapper, it doesn’t matter how good your kid is – they aren’t going to take them.

We constantly told our son that he could play where HE wanted to play whether it was a PWO or scholly (and he multiple offers of each type). Ultimately he chose a school

that offered him a full ride but – for him – it was more about the actual University then it was about anything else.

CONTINUED TRAINING

This is a mistake I’ve seen families make. Our son got the offer so we are done with training. The difference between high school football and college football is the difference between driving on the Interstates here in the US and driving on the autobahn in Germany and you want your son to keep honing his skills for his entire college – and NFL – career.

We highly recommend starting private lessons with Rubio in high school and continuing these at least yearly – through college and beyond. Also, be sure you have your kid training at least sometimes during the year with a RUBIO instructor (Samantha can tell you where the closest RUBIO instructor is to you) and if you aren’t near one then go with Virtual Lessons. We started private lessons with Finch as soon as we started with Rubio and that made a huge difference. We didn’t have the option of virtual lessons at that time so we drove quite a distance on a regular basis so that our son could improve. With the option of virtual lessons, the sky is truly the limit in terms of improvement.

The one “regret” that I have is that we didn’t start private lessons with Rubio in Idaho sooner than we did. It is definitely an investment but having Rubio completely and utterly focused on your son for a period of time truly is priceless and every time we have gone up there it has taken our son to the next level. So, as soon as you can afford that – do it – you won’t regret it.

We also recommend attending January and May Vegas if at all possible. It gives your son invaluable experience.

THOUGHTS TO TAKE AWAY

To sum all of this up, our son worked very hard and daily to achieve his goal of playing college football and continues to work his butt off to be the best that he can be but none of this would’ve been possible without Rubio.

Rubio wasn’t easy on him. He set goals for him that were sometimes difficult for our son to achieve but he worked as hard as he did because Rubio expected it of him and challenged him to never settle for less. People rise to the level of expectation that are

placed upon them and we believe that Rubio set him up for success by expecting these things from him.

So I will end this the way I started it…..Our son is a Rubio Long Snapper. He isn’t just a long snapper, he is a Rubio Long Snapper and we are very proud of that distinction.

Watch List for The Chris Rubio Award 2018

Please note: you do NOT have to be on this list to win the award in January!!!

LONG SNAPPER QUALIFICATIONS

Last year’s winner, Oscar Shadley (Va. Tech)

What is the Award?
The Award will be presented on an annual basis to the best national high school Long Snapper for that given season.

Who Is Eligible?
Every athlete that plays high school football at the varsity level, regardless of state division, or age. You DO NOT have to attend a Rubio Long Snapping / Chris Sailer Kicking camp to win this award.

How Do You Win?

You will have to be the starter for your high school varsity team.
You must not have more than one bad snap all season (snap that gets by the punter or the holder).
You must have 85% of your punt snaps in The Rubio Zone.
If you have to snap and block for your team, that is looked at in higher regard.
The amount of tackles is taken into consideration with the voting.
You must have started in 80% of the current year’s games for your varsity team.

A Long Snapper’s physical size is NOT taken into consideration in the voting.
Other positions played are NOT taken into consideration for voting.
You may be viewed by Chris Rubio in person, send in film, have a high school head coach’s recommendation, college special team’s coach recommendation or sports writer’s recommendation to be considered eligible.
A panel of voters assembled by the Chris Rubio selection committee will vote for the winner.

How Does the Voting Take Place?
A panel of voters assembled by the Chris Rubio selection committee will be voting. The panel will include: Chris Rubio, past and current NFL Long Snappers, past and current NCAA Long Snappers, past finalists for the Chris Rubio Award (once they graduate from college), and Sports writers and columnists.

When?
August: A Watch List of Long Snappers will be announced each year before the high school football season begins. The players on the Watch List were selected based on statistics from the previous season and upcoming season expectations. The eventual winner does NOT have to be on the Watch List to win the awards.

10 Tips for College Camps

Headed to a college camp this summer? Here’s ten great tips to help you out…..

1. Dress accordingly, roll up with a Rubio Long Snapping shirt on so they know what you are all about and that you have a great background in Long Snapping. Earned a TOP 12 shirt, even better.

2. Be prepared to answer basic questions regarding your name, height, weight, school, GPA, test scores, where you live, etc. Speak clearly and slow down. Remember, everyone might now have your same accent

3. Look each coach directly in their eyes and shake their hands firmly. Nervous about speaking to someone, look at their forehead or right above their eyes and it will be close enough. Breathe

4. Drink a ton of water and make sure you are continuously stretching. You don’t want to cramp up and you don’t know when they might pull you to the side to do something different.

5. Do NOT over-snap. If you get thrown to another field to “just go and snap” be sure to take long pauses. You bodies are not meant to snap hundreds of balls in one day. Once your form is gone, your snaps will be negatively impacted.

6. Be friendly to everyone (should be a no-brainer) while on campus. You never know who is talking to you or who is watching you. CAMERAS ARE EVERYWHERE

7. Never, and I mean NEVER, lose your composure over a bad snap. Your recruiting will not end over one bad snap but it might over one bad reaction.

8. SNAP WITH CONFIDENCE and believe in yourself. You’ve snapped a thousand balls in your life, these will be no different. You are still just an upside quarterback going the wrong way Snapping some leather backwards. It’s not rocket science.

9. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT do too many camps in June. NEVER go back to back days and try to limit yourself to no more than FOUR camps in the month. Your body won’t be able to handle it and your performances will be impacted. One bad camp can spread quickly amongst coaches

10. Thank your parents/guardians for spending the money to take you to these camps. Big hugs to them (after you shower). Be nice and, of course, never be the first to let go from the hug #RubioFamily #TheFactory #TeamRubio

Sodie went off to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo but realized that college football wasn’t for him in the long run. He had visions (or sounds) of music on his mind and he didn’t want let his musical dream fade so he ran with it! He has played under the name Sodie Orr, Sodie Aura and Wes James. Here we go…..

What is your occupation? I am currently a full time musician

Where do you live? I live in Carlsbad but am moving to the San Fernando Valley soon.

Married? Kids? No marriage and I ammmm NOT THE FATHER (yet, praise the heavens)

What is your fondest memory of your time playing college football? My fondest memory of playing college football is watching all the upperclassmen angrily look at me with jealousy in their eyes as they practiced while i sat on the sidelines for the last 2 hours of practice every day. Special teams was right after warm ups.

How come you no longer play football? Full time musician.

If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snappers, what would it be? If I could give a bit of advice to Rubio Long Snappers, it would be to really appreciate the camps and time with Rubio while you’re there. Football was cool, but being a part of the Rubio family and Long Snapping community meant more to me than anything I ever did in college. I learned a lot about life and how to be a better human as well as a better long Snapper.

If you could give ONE bit of advice to the current Rubio Long Snapping PARENTS, what would it be? My advice to the parents of Rubio Snappers would be to push your young man harder. Make sure he’s doing his drills daily, stretching, and that his grades are up. I’ve seen a lot of my friends lives change completely in the best ways from dedicating fully to the craft. Shoutout to my NFL homies I met at Rubio camps.

When was the last time you snapped a ball and for what reason? The last time I snapped a ball was a few months ago, on camera, to show Rubio I still sling pearls. Once a snapper always a snapper.

If you could go back and play football in college again, would you go to the same school or a different one? Why? If I HAD to go back to school again and play ball, I would want to go to a different school. I didn’t enjoy my program very much, and would have enjoyed the benefits of playing for a big time football oriented university. I also realized once I got there that I didn’t love football at all. If Long snapping was an Olympic sport I would have gone for gold… but I knew that football wasn’t my path, so I left and went for my dream of making music. And if you’re feeling that way, it’s okay. Stick it out as long as you can and give it a chance to come around. But if you know deep down it’s not for you once you’re in it, don’t be afraid to follow your heart and passion.

Any regrets during college? Anything you wish you had done or hadn’t done? I don’t have too many regrets about my college experience. Since my heart wasn’t in football, I do feel that I missed out on a lot of the things that were going on while I was traveling for away games etc. But I am and will always be grateful I got there through Rubio’s teachings and my own hard work.

What tremendous thing have you been a part of or experienced since you graduated? I did not graduate… instead I started writing music and decided to do a showcase in LA, where an A&R from Atlantic Records saw me and wanted to sign me on the spot. Since then, i have recorded at multiple Atlantic Records studios, opened for artists such as Curren$y, Ab Soul, Chance the Rapper, Shwayze, and more. I interned for rapper Too $hort for a year at his complex in LA, as well as producer legend Rodney Jerkins (aka Darkchild). And I believe that’s all just the tip of the iceberg. As long as I maintain BALANCE in my life (work hard/ maintain self care, grind/ get proper rest), EXTEND and network with the contacts I’ve made in the industry and beyond, and FOLLOW THROUGH on my commitments and goals… anything is possible.

It is when he was a special guest of Neil Diamond (if you don’t know who the legend Neil Diamond, you have some severe issues) and opened for him in San Diego. I hang it proudly where I do lessons and have it right next to where all the Long Snappers snap the ball so they can see it and realize that life is not all about Long Snapping and a person has to be truly well rounded to succeed. This poster is truly one of my most valued possessions I own. Thank you Sodie!

Virtual Lessons Details

As you already know, Rubio Long Snapping has been offering Virtual Lessons for over the last year. They have been a smashing success and many of you have been asking a ton of great questions about them so here is so more details…

What it is

- A personal one on one conversation between a snapper and a senior Rubio instructor over FaceTime or Skype while they review 10-15 snaps sent in via Hudl Technique.

- For the first lesson, each snapper will send in five snaps from the side angle and five from the front. My instructors don’t need to see where the ball goes, they are strictly focused on your form.

- After the initial FaceTime session where we review the first week’s worth of film, we will discuss certain drills your snapper needs to do in order to improve their respective weaknesses.

- Upon request, each snapper will also receive a weekly regimen of drills and live snaps to do

- The process continues as we progress throughout your package of lessons. You may not be locking out your legs the first lesson, do some drills and its fixed. During the next lesson we may notice that you aren’t getting your eyes through, so we’ll give you a different group of drills to do in order to fix that.

YOU’LL SEND IN CLIPS OF YOUR SNAPPER DOING THE DRILLS, ALONG WITH CLIPS OF THE LIVE SNAPS. Parents, this holds your snapper accountable to doing drill work, rather than just snapping 100 balls and calling it a day because they think they’ve improved.

Who it’s for

- EVERYONE, no matter where you are in the world or in your snapping career, you can receive world class instruction from Rubio Long Snapping.

- Young snappers or snappers that have never been to a camp: This is a great way to learn what you need to work on before coming to your next Rubio Camp. First timers, this is a great appetizer for things we will cover at your next Rubio camp

So, You Didn’t Make the TOP 12, Now What?

For the past couple weeks, you have been watching the TOP 12 Camp Invited Long Snappers get chosen one by one. Daily, you stared at your Twitter feed, Instagram or Facebook waiting for the inevitable clues to be dropped. Each day, a couple people were ecstatic while countless others felt the opposite emotions. A couple days ago, the final members of the TOP 12 Camp Invitees were announced and a balloon was popped for many Long Snappers. Now what?

Couple ways to look at it….

You can be upset with me for not selecting you. You can be upset with yourself for not performing when it counted. You can even find a way to blame others, but, it is ultimately on you. The only thing you can control is how hard and smart you work. Everyone in Vegas is competing for the same spots. Don’t let anybody outwork you and you will see different results.

You need to use this as motivation to make sure you perform better. This is all up to you. The choice is yours.

If you are a Long Snapper that strives to be the best, you want to be at that TOP 12 camp during the summer. Any single athlete that has been there (scholarship Long Snappers, All-Americans, NFL players) will tell you it is, by far, the best camp they have ever been to in their life. What you need to do is get back on the horse. Work smarter and harder.

Many great Long Snappers did NOT make it simply because in Vegas they didn’t feel they could. They did NOT have confidence. They were HOPING they would snap well instead of KNOWING they would snap well. Sound familiar?

Just because you didn’t make the TOP 12 does NOT mean you are a bad Long Snapper at all and that you should just stop. It means that you need to work harder and smarter at VEGAS XXXIV to be selected to the next batch of TOP 12 Campers to be invited. Remember, I will be choosing twenty more there and then those forth will be narrow down at the camp to see who really is THE TOP 12 LONG SNAPPERS.

You need to knock my socks off. THE RANKINGS CAN BE ADJUSTED ANYTIME I SEE YOU LIVE. You need to show everyone this spring as I pass through the country that you are the best. Dominate. Know you can do it AND do it!

LONG SNAPPER QUALIFICATIONS

What is the Award?
The Award will be presented on an annual basis to the best national high school Long Snapper for that given season.

Who Is Eligible?
Every athlete that plays high school football at the varsity level, regardless of state division, or age. You DO NOT have to attend a Rubio Long Snapping camp to win this award.

How Do You Win?

You will have to be the starter for your high school varsity team.
You must not have more than one bad snap all season (snap that gets by the punter or the holder).
You must do both punt and p.a.t. snaps.
If you have to snap and block for your team, that is looked at in higher regard.
The amount of tackles is taken into consideration with the voting.
You must have started in 80% of the current year’s games for your varsity team.
A Long Snapper’s physical size is NOT taken into consideration in the voting.
Other positions played are NOT taken into consideration for voting.
You may be viewed by Chris Rubio in person, send in film, have a high school head coach’s recommendation, college special team’s coach recommendation or sports writer’s recommendation to be considered eligible.
A panel of voters assembled by the Chris Rubio selection committee will vote for the winner.

When?
August: A Watch List of 15 Long Snappers will be announced each year before the high school football season begins. The players on the Watch List were selected based on statistics from the previous season and upcoming season expectations. The eventual winner does NOT have to be on the Watch List to win the awards.

Rubio Long Snapping Year Round Package

Rubio Long Snapping has always been about the athletes above everything else, the unmistakable #1 priority. Our mission is to deliver the very best technical training to fuel growth and development as a Long Snapper, and secondly to provide and the best possible exposure to NCAA and NFL Football Coaches and Staffs.

It is a rather simple formula. We provide the framework for athletes to grow their Long Snapping skill through drills and exercises that translate into technique, accuracy, and speed over time. The more frequently we have the opportunity to work with Long Snappers at Regional and National Camps the faster we see the development typically. However merely attending camps alone will not work, it is the dedication to hard work in between camps that will pay the greatest dividend. As the athlete grows and develops, Rubio Long Snapping creates awareness and exposure to NCAA and NFL Coaches through our personal relationships, our website, and via Social Media better than any other Long Snapping instructor. Camp attendance is the basis for us being able to document growth and development through video, competition results, and rank athletes within each class. Rankings are based solely on how the athletes at every camp perform and compete with their peers, those who attend more frequently give themselves the most chances succeed and thereby climb the rankings.

That being said, Rubio Long Snapping fully understands the enormous commitment that it takes to get your athlete to Regional and National Camps. It is a huge commitment and investment of time and money. And while Rubio Long Snapping is in fact a business, it has always been about the athletes first and foremost. So in an attempt to help provide athletes and their families with the greatest possible access to Regional and National Events we would like to announce the 2017 / 2018 Rubio Long Snapping All Access Program.

Starting with our 2017 Fall Camp Schedule, our Rubio Long Snapping Families will be able to pay one flat cost per year for their athletes to attend all of the Regional and National Camps they would like for one fee. This new program will cover Fall, Spring, and Summer Camps (in any city / state) and both the January and May Las Vegas Events. The Rubio Long Snapping All Access Program will start with the Fall 2017 Camps and run through the Summer 2018 Camps. The only camps this program will not include are The Top 12 Camp and the Underclassmen Invitational, those camps will be separate costs to attend. This program is a direct result of feedback from our Rubio Long Snapping Families, and we are thrilled to offer it. We hope it is an accurate reflection of how we feel about having most opportunities to develop Long Snappers in the coming year.

Rubio Long Snapping has grown immensely over the past 16 years….

Rubio Long Snapping has gone from having barely double digit Long Snappers at a Vegas Event to double digits plus 300 at the same Vegas Event.

Rubio Long Snapping has gone from 1 lesson per every other month to continuous lessons all over the country, Virtual Lessons and lessons with NFL Long Snappers (that have been with Rubio Long Snapping since the beginning)

Rubio Long Snapping has gone from a couple Long Snappers going to college, to over 350 in the past three years alone, and to over 1,000 in college and/or the NFL!

Free Fall Camp Contest!

As always, Rubio Long Snapping is offering up a way to attend a Rubio Long Snapping camp in the fall for free! I usually end up having one winner but this time I am going to do something different….I am going to have one possible winner from each location Rubio Long Snapping is running a camp. Therefore, there could be possibly EIGHT winners announced when the contest is over!!! So, if you say live in Idaho and win, you will earn a free admission to the WA camp on October 22nd. If you live in Florida and win, you will earn a free admission to the GA camp on December 3rd.

If you have been on the line at all lately, you have seen the Drive By Dunk Challenge. Some are incredible and some don’t end up so well….

Bottom line, here is the contest…

WHO: Any Long Snapper from 6th grade to 2nd year of JC that wants to earn a free admission to a Rubio Long Snapping Fall Camp!

WHAT: The Long Snapper must film themselves doing FIVE random snaps in random locations with a lot of pressure on themselves. The better the snap with the more hoopla around it (think massive crowd), the more chance you have of winning. The Long Snapper can’t break any laws while doing this and safety must be the priority. I am thinking more like snapping at a food court in a mall and not on top of a moving car. I will take less than five entries but I will not take more than five. You can only enter one total video to me, so make sure all snaps are on that video. Any entries that break any laws or are deemed unsafe by the Rubio Long Snapping staff, will not be accepted.

WHEN: The Long Snapper must have the five videos submitted on YouTube with the title, Rubio Long Snapping 2017 #DriveBySnapping Contest. That video must be sent to my email, [email protected], by no later than August 26th at noon pst. Any entries after that, will be not be accepted.

WHERE: Where you have the courage to snap a ball in public for great footage….as long as it is safe and you are not breaking the law

WHY: To earn a free admission to a Rubio Long Snapping Fall Camp!

The RSI (Rubio Standard Index)

All Rubio Long Snapping camps will feature a shortened version of the VEGAS testing format. Once the Long Snapper has completed the test, they earn an RSI which is the fairest and most accurate way to judge a Long Snapper by numbers. Once you register, for a Rubio Long Snapping camp, a full, detailed explanation will be in your confirmation email.

Each Long Snapper will now be tested on The Rubio Long Snapping Target with one snap per section instead of three. Meaning, you get one regular snap, one block left, one block right, and one speed for both punt snaps and short snaps to total eight snaps. Therefore, at the end of testing, the RSI will be tripled to reveal the participants’ RSI for that particular camp. Trust me, I do get that a Regional Camp RSI will not be the exact same as a VEGAS Event RSI for several reasons (length of test, pressure of Vegas, etc.) but it will pretty darn close and definitely fair.

The RSI is an excellent way for a participant to truly show how good of a Long Snapper they are as it balances the accuracy along with the speed of the ball, plus it will show how well the Long Snapper grows through each and every Rubio Long Snapping camp. Also, the RSI‘s will be posted on each Long Snappers profile after every camp they attend. Please note: the RSI does not account for athleticism, spiral or mentality.

RSI‘s can range from zero to basically 90 (if a Long Snapper was to get a score 48 points and averaged .65 on their punt snaps). The highest score recorded was Karsten Battles at the summer 2017 TX Camp with an 86.96. The 12 finalists at VEGAS XXIX all had above 50’s on their RSI and that was a record. A 30 is usually pretty darn solid.

Please Note: The RSI is not completely how your Rubio Long Snapping ranking will be calculated as there are many factors to being a great Long Snapper. The main things that each Long Snapper will be ranked on are the following:

Speed (should be less than .75 for a 15 yard punt snap)
Accuracy (all snaps should be in The Rubio Zone)
Consistency (a college coach is going to want to see how consistent you are with your speed…if you can snap a .75, your snaps should be right around there, well, consistently)
Mentality (how well do you handle pressure)
Athleticism (do you move well or does it look like you are in pain when moving)
Size (an ideal Long Snapper would be about 6’3″ and 235)
Spiral (does the ball look pretty, slice through the wind and easy to catch)
Blocking (will you be able to withstand a major college rush) If you have ever been to a Rubio Long Snapping Vegas Event, you know that one of the main parts of competition day is when each Long Snapper gets tested on The Rubio Long Snapping Target.

NFL Training

In lieu of a Rubio Long Snapping NFL camp this year, I will be personally offering private lessons in Northern Idaho. Spots are limited and I will not be taking a mass group.

After speaking with college and NFL coaches, scouts and agents, I was advised to run specific lessons, this year, with each NFL ready Long Snapper to offer more one on one interaction to give back to the scouts and agents. Last year alone, Rubio Long Snapping had ELEVEN Long Snapper earn tryouts based on Rubio Long Snapping film and my word.

For this year, Rubio Long Snapping will not be running a NFL Free Agent camp to focus solely on the private lessons with NFL Free Agents

One of the things the coaches, scouts and agents liked the most is that there was no bias. If you can snap and move at the next level, I tell them that. If you can’t snap and move at the next level, I tell them that as well. I don’t care if I have seen you snap at my camps or not. This is all about a bottom line with the NFL. You either are the full package or you are not.

With eleven guys getting tryouts, it is quite clear that my word is good and definitely respected.

The lessons will offer the following….

Private instruction with me in an indoor location
Film to review as well film to send out to agents and teams with my stamp of approval on it.
Game plan to get each Long Snapper ready for their pro day.
Detailed planning on meetings with agents and coaches.

The Journey of Rubio Long Snapper Damon Johnson

I wanted to tell you a quick story, that very few of you actually know about, regarding Rubio Long Snapper Damon Johnson.

Damon, a 2016 Five Star Rubio Long Snapper from CA, was offered a full scholarship to West Virginia back in June heading into his senior year. He took his trip there during the fall, fell in love with it and committed to be their next Long Snapper in October of his senior year.

On the Friday of VEGAS XXVII in January (several months after his commitment), Damon was packing the car for the weekend and was contacted by a Graduate Assistant from West Virginia.The G.A. informed Damon that West Virginia was not going to honor their commitment to Damon and there would be no scholarship for him as they were going to give it to another position. (I have been working with Long Snappers for well over a decade and this is the first time I have ever seen something like this happen. First time.)

Damon was beyond dumbfounded and completely thrown for a loop. Down in the dumps would be the biggest understatement in the history of mankind. This is a kid, who is very quiet and doesn’t show much emotion, having to deal with a major ordeal before one of the biggest weekends of his life. Damon who was so loyal to West Virginia that he told many schools (North Carolina, Memphis, Portland State and BYU) that he was done with his recruiting to get ready for the Mountaineers.

Imagine heading to a Rubio Long Snapping Vegas competition with a full scholarship under your belt, knowing you could breathe a little easier and having it taken from you (out of your control) at the very last second. 99.9% of the Long Snappers and their families would have not shown up or been a visual mess. With the Johnson family, you would never be able to tell anything was even wrong. I am still amazed at how well they handled it all.

I told him and his family to simply relax and that EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON. I knew we could be headed for an uphill battle, but even I didn’t realize just how much of a fight it would entail.

After a call, USC immediately jumped on the Damon bandwagon and wanted him asap. A top tier Rubio Long Snapper is not always around after signing day and one had just appeared. Damon began communication with the Trojans but soon found out his English score on the SAT was simply too low to be a preferred walk-on at USC. This is where Damon goes from a boy, to a man.

Damon was told he would have to go to a JC, maintain a 3.5 GPA, take eight classes from summer through fall, and if he received a C or lower, he would disqualify himself. The eight classes had to be core classes (fluff elective classes would NOT be accepted).

This is a BIG reach for Damon. He is (was) not, let’s say, a very motivated and/or highly academic student….in the past. School was something Damon simply tolerated in order to play football and hang out with his friends. His entire mindset would have to change.

He stuck his head in the books, camped out in the library and hired any tutors he could find to help him TRY to achieve his goal of getting to USC. In the summer, he took English, History and Art History. In the fall, he took English, Biology with a lab, Sociology, History and Criminal Justice. He studied and studied and studied and studied and studied….well, you get my point.

About one week ago, Damon received his final grades from Citrus Junior College and found he had done it! USC already knew and congratulated him on his accomplishment. He would be able to get into USC and play football for them. To put even more icing on the cake, the Trojans presented Damon with a four year college scholarship to USC instead of a preferred walk-on!

Damon accepted, signed right away and will be enrolling at USC on January 4th.

I am EXTREMELY proud of Damon and his family. I really don’t think Damon, or his family, even believed he could do it. There were many calls, texts, emails between us all. Damon, and his family, have traveled an incredible emotional journey over the past year. His story is one that I will tell countless times as I am sure he and his family will as well.

Remember, recruiting is never easy and no two stories are the same. Patience is a key virtue throughout and, never forget, everything happens for a reason.

Congratulations once again to Rubio Long Snapper Damon Johnson! YOU DID IT….on the field and, more importantly, off the field as well.

2nd Annual Rubio Long Snapper George Steward Award

To honor Rubio Long Snapper George Steward, let’s do this again!

If you have been following me on social media the past year, you know that the Rubio Long Snapping family suffered a terrible loss with the tragic death of Rubio Long Snapper George Steward one year ago today.

George was simply waiting at an intersection, with his long time girlfriend, when an out of control car crushed his car and ended his, and his girlfriend’s lives. They were 18 years old.

If you knew George, even for a second, you knew he was always smiling and having a good time. His smile was infectious. He was a big man with a big heart and an even bigger smile.

George was the perfect reflection of a Rubio Long Snapper.

I have spoken to his mom several times over the past couple of years. She is obviously extremely distraught over what has occurred but wants George to live on with Rubio Long Snapping. She told me he was extremely proud to be a Rubio Long Snapper (look at his graduation announcement) and was always in a Rubio shirt.

George’s mom, Adrienne De La Fuente, wants to create a VEGAS scholarship in George’s name. She wants to sponsor a deserving Long Snapper that wants to go to VEGAS but possibly doesn’t have the means. She asked me to create the criteria, so here we go….

WHO: Any Long Snapper from 7th grade to 2nd year of JC

WHAT: This award will go simply to a happy Long Snapper. In honor of George, who was ALWAYS smiling and happy, this award will go to someone on that same page. To enter, you need to include at least three pictures of you with a genuine smile. Three more with you around others smiling and two letters of recommendation (yup, you guessed it, just stating you are happy person) from a family member and someone at your school.

VEGAS XXIX CONTEST WINNER!!!!

As you know, Rubio Long Snapping had a GIVE BACK CONTEST for a free admission to VEGAS XXIX.

All of my contests are difficult to judge, but this was one was probably the most tricky as everyone did a great job in expressing themselves and what they do to give back. I saw videos on topics ranging from….

Voluntarily mowing a cemetery lawn that takes THREE days…
Working with the Special Olympics
Volunteering for a Pediatric Cancer Foundation
Care packages of food for the needy
Organizing kid’s games at the local church
Heart screenings for teens
Serving meals to the needy
Working on a food drive for ELEVEN years
Habitat for Humanity
Traveling to Costa Rica to help the poor
A project to keep kid’s in school
The Ronald McDonald House
It’s About the Warrior Foundation to help soldiers

Honestly, any one of the entries could have won but there are two that really stood out and here they are in alphabetical order….

Needless to say, I was VERY impressed with Nick Tibbetts and Jacob Zuhr for acting as leaders in their community. They not only volunteer, they started a volunteering organization to get others involved.

So, in the spirit of GIVING BACK, I am going to crown them BOTH the winners of the contest and they are both going to be given a FREE admission to VEGAS XXIX!

Congratulations once again to Tibbetts and Zuhr for going above and beyond in helping others. These two, and all of the others, are great examples of what the Rubio Long Snapping family is all about!

A Guide For Rubio Long Snapping Parents on Game Day

As season starts, parents can tend to be filled with tons of emotions: joy, excitement, fear, nervousness, etc. All are normal and should be felt if your son is going to play on Friday, Saturday or even Sunday. Here are a couple of things to remember….

You aren’t the first parent to go through this and you won’t be the last. Just like I tell my Long Snappers, if someone else has done it, so can you.
Know that your son is well prepared. Odds are, if you are reading this, your son has been to a Rubio Long Snapping camp in the past couple months and got great instruction. Not only did he, but you did so as well. Remember when I brought you on the field? I don’t do that just because I want to spray with some people closer to my age. I do it so you can learn and teach your son when I am not around….and you have been doing that, right:)
Review the mental aspect with your son before the game. Remind him, and yourself, that he, and you, are ready for this and he, and you, will dominate the moment.
Make sure you hire someone else to film the game (one of your son’s friends or something….”Hey Johnny, here’s ten bucks, film the whole game, do it well, keep the camera on the Long Snapper and keep quiet”) so you can focus on the whole experience and not be stuck behind a camera seeing the game through a three inch screen.
Prepare for the game with your son. After he snaps a great ball, you will want to give him signals to show him how great he did…thumbs up, big outstretched arms emulating a Rubio hug, blow him a kiss (get his lady friends involved).

Breathe. Have fun. Believe in your son. Have confidence in him. Trust me, it will overflow into him.

Enjoy every single moment you have with your children. This is an incredible time in your life and you need to embrace every single second of it.

VEGAS XXIX CONTEST!

As you know, for each VEGAS Event, Rubio Long Snapping will always have a contest to earn a FREE admission to VEGAS XXIX. This year will be a little different! Here we go:

WHO: Any Long Snapper from 7th grade to second year of Junior College that would like to attend VEGAS XXIX for free.

WHAT: Rubio Long Snapping VEGAS XXIX Gives Back!

Over the years we have seen some excellent examples of Rubio Long Snappers giving back to their community. I want to see which Rubio Long Snappers are out there already volunteering their time, being active leaders in their community and, if you are not, why aren’t you and it is now time to get off your butts to do so!

For this contest, I would like to see which Long Snappers are involved in their local charities or actively volunteer across the world. You will need to submit a video entry, no longer than two minutes in length. Your video will have to be uploaded to YouTube with the title: Your Name, Rubio Long Snapping VEGAS XXIX Gives Back, 2016.

Your video entry will have to clearly state who you are, where you are, what charity or volunteer organization you are involved in, and why you are passionate about volunteering with that specific group.

The overall focus of the video should be why giving back is important to you. It doesn’t matter who or what you support or how you give back, just show us why and how you do! If you pick up trash off the beach on weekends, awesome, tell us why that is important to you. Do you hand out meals or blankets to those in need, tell us why it is you started volunteering in that specific way. This is not a competition to see who can give back the “best”. We just want to encourage the ENTIRE Rubio Long Snapping family to get out and volunteer. Don’t stress or put too much thought into it and do not feel bad if you’ve been slacking, simply get up and go!

This video does NOT need to be done with high tech cameras or anything like that as simply creating an edited iMovie on your iPhone would be more than sufficient to get your point across to the Rubio Long Snapping family.

WHEN: All entries must be submitted to me by email (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping) by October 1st at noon pst.

WHERE: All across the world!

WHY: To motivate and energize the Rubio Long Snapping family to get out and help their community and those around them. The most inspiring video entry will earn a free admission to VEGAS XXIX.

Remember, Long Snapping can take you far in life, but giving back to your community will take you even farther!
