The 5 Star Long Snapper

In the past, I have described to you what it takes to be a great Long Snapper. When you combine all of those factors, you create the ultimate Long Snapper….you create the 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper.

Please notice, I didn’t just write a 5 Star Long Snapper. I wrote a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper. There is a difference.

The term/prize/accomplishment of 5 stars is thrown around a bit too much, and too easily, these days. It has become almost like a standing ovation at an awards show or an encore at a concert, it has become expected. And, when something is expected, it is shocking when it doesn’t happen. People can’t grasp the concept that such a high honor is not something that is just given, it is earned. It takes a great amount of skill, work and dedication.

One of the biggest “complaints” I receive from parents and Long Snappers is that they don’t understand how their child/them is NOT a 5 Star for me if someone else has them as such. Simple, they just aren’t a 5 Star Long Snapper…yet. My rankings are my rankings. I do them myself. I take great pride in them. I travel to all my own camps and see everything. I don’t rank off a Target, charting or some sort of made up mathematical formula. I know what it takes to snap at the next level and I know what the college and pro coaches want in a Long Snapper. There is a reason my top Long Snappers are always with the top programs.

I see the most Long Snappers in the country…by far. Therefore, being a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper is an actual accomplishment. A 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper combines all of the aspects that make up a great Long Snapper (you better know them by now) with the fact, that in my eyes, you could play a college game tonight…let alone in a year or two.

Being a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper is something to take pride in. You have put in the right work and accomplished a real goal. It was not handed to you and it was out of real field of athletes.

Spring Camp Locations

Here are some of the locations for the Rubio Long Snapping spring camps….

February 24th will be at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame HS in CA. This camp is now sold out. For the wait list, please email Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com

March 3rd will be at Cedar Hill HS in Texas. This camp is now sold out. For the wait list, please email Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com

March 17th in IL will be at Downers Grove South HS. You can register for the camp HERE. It will be sold out soon is my guess.

April 13th in NC will be held at William Amos Hough HS. This camp is now sold out. For the wait list, please email Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com

Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping Alums Square off in Denver this Weekend!

January 9, 2013 By

This weekend’s Divisional AFC Playoff game in Denver, CO featuring the Baltimore Ravens vs. the Denver Broncos includes two Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping alums. The featured alums are both rookies and stars in the making.

Justin Tucker, Kicker for the Baltimore Ravens is having a phenomenal season and was just a few votes away from being selected for the Pro Bowl. Tucker has connected on 30 of 33 field goals this year and has been a reliable asset on special teams for the AFC North Champs Ravens.

Denver Broncos Long Snapper Aaron Brewer is another standout Rookie out of San Diego State. Brewer has started all 16 games this season and will look for his first playoff victory this weekend. Brewer beat out veteran Long Snapper Lonie Paxton in training camp and has never looked back.

Look for these two Rookies in the game’s most critical moments to see who comes out on top.

“Hey Rubio, where can I find…”

This is easily one of the most common lead-ins to the questions I receive on a daily basis and it should be. My website and blog are absolutely packed with tons and tons of information and they can be overwhelming.

There are literally thousands of pages packed with content when you combine the two. Trying to find something can be down right intimidating UNLESS you use the search buttons:) My bet is not a lot of people knew that these buttons existed on the sites.

There is so much information that there is no way even I can recall it all at the drop of a hat. So, when someone asks me a question about the phone number for the Vegas hotel, I simply go the search button, type in “11th hotel, vegas” and boom, several pages come up with those key words. I do the same with the blogs as I always get questions saying something along the lines of “Hey Rubio, I know you wrote a blog about grayshirting and I can’t find it.” All I do is go to the blog, type in search button “grayshirting” and several of my blogs will pop up that had to do with that topic.

Rubio Long Snapper Tyler Schmitt Doing Great Things

If you have been involved with Rubio Long Snapping since it’s inception, you know the name Tyler Schmitt.

Tyler is one of the original Rubio Long Snappers and, quite possibly, the greatest one to come through the ranks. Tyler is a 2004 graduate that went on to play his college ball at San Diego St. He was dominant there and was drafted, yes drafted, by the Seattle Seahawks! Tyler was an extremely athletic Long Snapper that is known for mind-boggling speed. He still holds, to this day, the fastest snap I have ever timed personally…..a .53 at 15 yards!!!! That is not a typo and you know how strict I am with my timing. If you ever saw Tyler snap in person, it was a spectacle.

Needless to say, Tyler ended up injuring his back with the Seahawks and had to hang up his cleats. It was a sad day for all. But, when one door closes, another opens….and this one opened up to a whole new world for Tyler.

Tyler is now a professional photographer that is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. He captures some of the most amazing images I have ever seen and doing a great thing with his talent. According to his website and Facebook page,

“Ty Schmitt is a former NFL long snapper who sells Landscape photography to help support current and former military families. For every print sold Ty donates 50% of his earnings to help those who make the ultimate sacrifice.”

Rubio Long Snappers Compete in High School All-American Games

Rubio Long Snappers Cole Mazza & Gabriel Miller will be participating in the Semper-Fidelis All-American Game tonight at 6:00 pm pst.

The game will be televised live on the NFL network and “is the culmination of a series of Diamond Flight Camps and a nationwide All-American player selection tour that collectively celebrate academic excellence, proven physical fitness, and quality of character” per their website.

Cole, who is committed to Alabama, and Gabriel, who is committed to Nebraska, both on full scholarship, were chosen by Rubio Long Snapping and Chris Sailer Kicking after dominating the selection camp for the Junior Rank Semper-Fidelis camp in Naples, FL this past summer.

Also, two time TOP 12er, Brendan Turelli, who already has a full scholarship offer from Wyoming, will be competing in the Under Armour All-Star game at 2:00 pm pst on ESPN.

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Jeff Palmer of the Oregon Ducks sets record

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Jeff Palmer will be setting a record for the University of Oregon tonight in the Fiesta Bowl, as he plays in his 52nd game for the Ducks!

That stat alone is simply amazing, but when you combine it with the fact that Palmer is 5’10” and 190 lbs, it is down right astonishing.

Palmer is someone who many, except for yours truly, thought was simply too small to play at the next level. Not only has he played, he has set a record for most games played at Oregon, and if I am not mistaken, he might have the most plays in NCAA history since he has been on countless pats for the Ducks. As you know, Oregon tends to score pretty darn quickly and the guy who has been snapping all of the extra points for the last four years is……..Jeff Palmer.

Palmer has been with Rubio Long Snapping since 2005. He was, and continues to be, one of the best athletes the Long Snapping world has ever seen as you can see below…..

I am very proud of all that Palmer has done and will continue to do with his life. If you ever get to meet him, you will understand how fantastic he truly is.

So, if a K/P gets All-Pro, their Long Snapper automatically does as well, right?

The NFL recently announced it’s All-Pro team for the 2012 season. On this list, there is every player listed EXCEPT Long Snapper. Obviously, this is an outrage but I have a solution.

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Justin Drescher of the New Orleans Saints had his punter picked…therefore, Drescher is automatically in. Done.

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Christian Yount of the Cleveland Browns had his kicker picked…therefore, Yount is automatically in. Done.

Glad I solved that problem. I am off to work on this whole fiscal cliff issue:)

Rubio Long Snappers Face Off in the NFL

Two former #1 Rubio Long Snappers, Christian Yount (2006) and Aaron Brewer (2008),  will face each other today when the Cleveland Browns travel to the Denver Broncos.

Both of these men are terrific people and obviously exquisite Long Snappers. I am pulling for a 0-0 tie with a ton of punt snaps:)

Rubio Long Snapper Matt Cota commits to Boise St!

Rubio Long Snapper and TOP 12er Matt Cota (ID, ’13) has committed to Boise St. as a preferred walk-on!

Cota has been with Rubio Long Snapping for two years and is known for his exquisite form and terrific athletic ability. He is an extremely smooth Long Snapper that looks to compete right off the bat next year as Rubio Long Snapper Chris Roberson will graduate after starting for four years.

Cota carries a 3.75 GPA and is just an all-around great guy. Boise St. got a great local Long Snapper.

Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of Alabama chosen for The Senior Bowl!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of the University of Alabama has been selected to play in The Senior Bowl!

According to The Senior Bowl website:

The Senior Bowl is home to a one-of-a-kind NFL Convention. In addition to the two NFL coaching staffs who coach the two Senior Bowl teams each year, over 800 NFL general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, personnel directors, scouts and other front office personnel from the 32 NFL teams annually attend Senior Bowl Week in Mobile.

Coaching staffs for the game each year are selected by the NFL office. In addition to the coaches, each NFL team chosen by the league to coach the Senior Bowl teams also brings its training, video and equipment staffs to the contest to work with the Senior Bowl players and maximize the many benefits that the players will receive by playing in the contest.

Tinker started attending Rubio Long Snapping camps back in 2007 (profile pic is above), dominated the Spring Event in 2008 and ended up a 5 Star Long Snapper that headed to Alabama. He has gone through a ton in his life and just continues to be a positive role model for Long Snappers, and your average Joes, around the U.S.

What About the Long Snapper?

They rarely get a mention even when they do their jobs perfectly. Make a mistake however, and they are usually blasted on replays. It’s life in the world of perhaps the most under-appreciated position in all of sports. Welcome to the world of football’s Long-Snapper.

Long Snapping only takes place on field goals, extra points, and punts, but there’s probably more to this job than you think. Consider that a Long Snapper is playing the important role of center while he is in. While an extra point or field goal requires a snap of about 7 yards, a punt will require a snap of twice that distance. That’s not all either, after snapping the ball he has to block a player who gets much more playing time than he does, and on punts he also has to run and cover the kick.

You talk about no respect…the highest drafted Long Snapper in the entire history of the NFL was with the 142nd pick. In 2003, the Browns took Ryan Pontbriand in the fifth round that year.

Next time you see those dramatic game winning field goals, take time to pay homage to that invisible gladiator of the gridiron, that unsung pilot of the pigskin, the Long Snapper.

Rubio Long Snapper Graydon Peterson commits to Dartmouth!!!

Rubio Long Snapper and TOP 12er Graydon Peterson (WI, ’13) has committed to play for Dartmouth!

This is a huge honor not only for the athletic side of things, but more so, for the academic side. Not everyone can say they will be playing football at an Ivy League school!

When Graydon told me about his commitment, he said “Took off the pads and went to warm up before snapping to the punters…wearing Top 12 shirt.  A Sailer guy, Henry Woodrow came over to catch, then more punters came over.  Woodrow told them the yellow shirt means “he’s good”  Kicking coach put a stopwatch on me…etc…etc…Long story short, came back with some offers and have decided to commit to….Dartmouth.  Embrace the power of yellow!”

NFL Long Snapper Prospect Brandon Hartson

NFL Long Snapper prospect Brandon Hartson recently finished his college career with the University of Houston and came out to get a lesson with me in Lewiston, ID to get fine-tuned for his Pro Day at Houston.

Right off the bat, it is easy to see that Brandon passes the eye ball test very quickly. He is an easy 6’2″ and right at 250 with no visible extra weight on him. He is built like a rock and extremely flexible as well. Even though he has gone through a lot in his life, he has one of the best overall attitudes I have ever encountered with a Long Snapper. Brandon is one of those people in life that ooze positivity. Great person to be around and a team will be fortunate to have him on their roster on his demeanor alone.

In regards to snapping, Brandon is very sharp. He snaps a smooth ball that is fast, yet still easy to catch. He averages right at .7 and is extremely accurate, which is easily what the NFL wants in a Long Snapper. I don’t believe I moved my feet one time to catch a ball throughout the entire day. He picked up blocking very well and, once he gets his large hands on you, it is over. PATs were like a machine and there is no issue at all there.

Bottom line, a very solid NFL prospect for Long Snapper that has the ability to play for many years in the league.

Rubio Long Snapper Chase McIntyre commits to Appalachian St.

Rubio Long Snapper Chase McIntyre (NC, ’13) has committed to Appalachian St. as a preferred walk-on!

Chase has been to several Rubio Long Snapping camps and improves at every one. Per his last evaluation in October….

“He just rips the ball back there to the punter. It is almost shocking how much force he gets on the ball. Spiral is tight and he is snapping with more confidence.”

Chase is a great worker that will do terrific things at Appalachian St. They are lucky to get him. He will be joining Rubio Long Snapper Brett Heimrich who is already on the Mountaineers roster.

The Process of Being Great

EVERYTHING MUST WORK TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE GREATNESS

 

HEART
Not matter how many people want it for you, if you don’t – it will never happen. You will never reach your potential. If you aren’t the one truly pushing yourself, you will never give it your all. You must have the heart and desire to want it and you have to want it all. It’s actually quite simple, you will be as good, or great, as YOU want to be.

FAMILY
This doesn’t just mean your immediate family. It is anyone that encompasses who you are and will help you along the way. No one achieves greatness on their own. No one. Family can be friends, coaches, teachers, etc. and they are all in your corner. They push you, sometimes nicely and sometimes not so nicely. They know what you need sometimes more than you do. You can survive without them, but it isn’t pleasant and they make your journey much more fruitful and obtainable.

ATHLETICISM
Can definitely put you in the drivers seat but will not keep you there. Eventually, the athleticism will wear off and then you will have to work smarter and not just harder. Your body, which houses your athleticism, will eventually wear down and then what are you stuck with? It is an important gear but not as imperative as others as it won’t keep you in the lead forever.

BRAINS
Really are the glue of it all. Will help you understand what to do and when to do it. Lack of brains will crush your chances for a long and fruitful career. Brains are a major gear and can stop or start the whole process of being great.

PERSONALITY
Getting along with others is not just a good thing, it is a necessity. Friends and family are one thing, but it is others that will enable you to achieve greatness in the long run as well. From trainers to journalists to managers to simply someone you meet along the way. Everyone can offer you something, just as you can offer something to everyone. Your personality will last much longer, and have more of an affect on others, than your athletic ability.

CONFIDENCE
The final touch. What takes a person over the top. The knowing you will dominate. The knowing you will get it done under pressure. The knowing you have “IT.” Confidence is the one thing that can heavily overpower the other gears within this system.
