Positive Vibes Needed for Rubio Long Snapper Ryan Parris

12983214_10209156556736206_8333383286686519457_oA couple of weeks ago I was contacted by Butch Parris. Butch is a long time member of the Rubio Family and his son, Ryan, is on the team at the University of Alabama. He notified me of a medical issue Ryan was having in Tuscaloosa. I offered to write this blog, so here we go.

Ryan needs some MAJOR positive vibes right now from the whole Rubio Long Snapping Family.

Here is the deal….

Couple weeks ago…The weekend of the LSU game this past season, Ryan started having vision and irritation problems in his left eye. It wasn’t the first time for something like that, he’s worn contacts for years and it happens occasionally.

This time though, it didn’t get any better.

To make a long story short, he has Acanthamoeba keratitis in his left eye. It’s a rare disease where an amoeba invades the cornea. It can result in permanent visual impairment or even blindness. It often takes 4 or 5 months to diagnose, but Ryan was lucky, it only took 2 months for him. Since the week after the National Championship game, he’s been visiting a cornea specialist in Birmingham once a week. During that time, he’s been on a strict regimen of drops that in some ways do as much harm as they do good.

We got some good news today, his vision, the irritation and the infection are all getting better. The biggest issue now is his cornea. Throughout this process, the irritation in his eye (in some ways exacerbated by the drops) has really been bad for his cornea. Today, the doctor put an amniotic membrane on his eye to a) slow down the damage being done and b) help the cornea repair itself.

If that membrane works, he should make a complete recovery. If it doesn’t, he’s going to need a corneal transplant. That wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but it would most likely end his time playing football.

Today….But, he went back to the doctor yesterday and things have gotten worse. Right now, it looks like the infection has made a comeback.

It’s so bad, that when the doc held two fingers up two feet in front of him (with his right eye covered) he could only tell that her hand was there. He had no idea how many fingers she was holding up.

He’s going back to the doc tomorrow. If things aren’t better, it’s likely that he’ll have surgery on Thursday.

PLEASE keep the entire Parris family in your thoughts. This kid needs all of the positive vibes he can get right now.

RECAP: 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas

On May 4-5, 2013 well over 100 Long Snappers from around the globe came out to Las Vegas to participate in the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas sponsored by Nike. The talent was excellent and so were the conditions. The staff was overflowing with one staff member per three Long Snappers so everyone was able to get the full experience throughout the weekend. Day one of the Event was all about instruction and many Long Snappers stood out immediately to make a name for themselves.

After it was all said and done, the winner of the camp was CJ Keller (2014, AZ). CJ handles pressure as well as anyone in the country, was snapping bullets all day and is very, very accurate and consistent. Kid is a machine and outlasted the rest of the competitors to take home the title!

CJ Keller

Winner of the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event: CJ KELLER!

The 12 finalists that earned their spot through their RSI score on the Target were: Nate Adams (AZ), Wyatt “Tucker” Smith (MS), RC Brunstetter (NC), Jordan Frese (TX), Tanner Carew (CA), Justin Garza (CA), Jake Knight (MI), CJ Keller (AZ), Bryan Scanlan (IL), Blake Ferguson (GA), Jordan Ober (NV) and Chris Nieto (CA).

The Finalists from the Spring Event

Here are some of the top performers, by graduating class, from the weekend…

2013/JC

Screen Shot 2013-05-29 at 9.08.55 AM

Andrew MacLean was dominant all weekend in Vegas!

  • Andrew MacLean was outstanding all weekend. He is built extremely well and snapping with a ton of confidence. This big Canadian has made quite a name for himself.
  • Jason Diffee was out in Vegas to get fine-tuned before heading off to Eastern Washington on scholarship. He did not disappoint.
  • Cody Block was smooth and is built well. Moves very smooth on his feet and is consistent with his snaps.

2014

Tanner Carew

Tanner Carew was dominant all weekend in Vegas.

  • Tanner Carew was off the charts all weekend and has taken the top spot in his class. Snaps absolute rockets, built like an athlete and has a tremendous attitude. Tell him what to do and just consider it done. TONS of upside on this already tremendous Long Snapper.
  • Alan Lucy continues his dominance by snapping well and really doing a great job in transforming his body into a D1 athlete.
  • Wyatt “Tucker” Smith is easily the top JC Long Snapper in the country. Built like a college tight end and snaps fire back to the punter.
  • Nate Adams has an amazing frame, a smooth snap and is very consistent. Love the way he moves and has a nice, smooth snap back to the punter and holder.
  • Casey Wilson is easily the smoothest Long Snapper in the country and will be purely dominant once he locks down his blocking.
  • Patrick Freeze is big, strong and snapping with a lot of confidence.
  • Curtis Billen easily snaps in the .6s and has a solid frame.
  • Jordan Frese is the top Long Snapper in TX and showed it all weekend. Great improvement.
  • Chris Nieto is built extremely long and athletic with a ton of upside. Could end up dominating his class.
  • Adam Vaught is massive and is snapping with power. The angrier he is is, the better he snaps.
  • Garrett Frum is working like a mad men and continues to improve daily.
  • Justin Garza was on fire all weekend. Intense Long Snapper that showed a ton of potential.
  • Seth Combs was snapping rockets all weekend and looked great all around.
  • Mitchell Hardy is big and snapping with great confidence. Tremendous attitude.
  • Nate Hawkins is very smooth and accurate with his Long Snapping. The more aggressive he gets, the better he will be.
  • Joel Baldwin has a nice long frame and a very smooth snap.
  • JC Everett is extremely coachable and strong. Always improving.
  • Christian Samarzich has a good body and is locking down his spiral. Solid all around Long Snapper.
  • Tommy Sullivan just continues to impress me with how he is turning his body and snapping around for greatness.
  • John Morrison is not the biggest man in the world but was snapping like he was. Smart Long Snapper that snaps hard.
  • Joe Lang has a great frame and always improves. Excellent attitude. Bright future.

2015

Blake Ferguson

Blake Ferguson was dominant all weekend in Vegas!

  • Blake Ferguson left no doubt he was the best Long Snapper in his class. When he is on, he is easily a college level Long Snapper NOW!
  • AJ Carty is built like a college Long Snapper and he is only a sophomore. Sky is the limit for him.

  • John Shannon was phenomenal all weekend in Vegas. At times, can snap in the .6s already! Great frame. Needless to say, keep a very close eye on him.
  • Johnny Den Bleyker did very well out in Vegas. Moves well on his feet and is very athletic. Great attitude.
  • Damon Johnson looked good with his form and was snapping the ball well. The more comfortable he gets with his ability, the better he will be.
  • Donald Reiter was impressive out in Vegas. He snaps a tight ball and shows waves of brilliance with his speed on the ball.

National Signing Day 2013 – Rubio Long Snapping Dominates

National College Signing Day for 2013 has concluded and once again Rubio Long Snapping is in the middle of the action.  Alabama, USC, Nebraska, and Michigan top the list of schools that have received commitments from Rubio Long Snappers.

6′ 2″ 241 lb. Cole Mazza from Bakersfield, CA committed to the Crimson Tide as one of 25 commitments to the nation’s number one college football program.  Originally committed to UCLA Mazza de-committed from the Bruins when it became clear that he was the number one long snapper prospect for D1 college football programs.  Chris Rubio isn’t surprised noting in an interview with Alabama website AL.com that “I can honestly say I have never seen such an overall dominant performance by a long snapper.  There was no doubt he was the best in the country. Mazza is as good, if not better, than advertised. If he continues at this pace with his snapping and his attitude, there is no telling how far he can go.”

Other promising Rubio Long Snapping alumni include Zach Smith to USC, Chase Domiguez to Utah, Gabriel Miller to Nebraska, Scott Sypniewski to Michigan. Brendan Turelli to Wyoming, Mike Lizanich to Tulane and Tucker Estheridge to Louisiana Tech.  In all thirty two Rubio Long Snapping alumni committed to major college football programs reaffirming that when it comes to Long Snapping Rubio leads the pack.  Click HERE for the complete list and visit rubiolongsnapping.com for more details on upcoming camps and the value of being a talented high school Long Snapper.

Rubio Long Snapping Makes History!

As you already know, today is National Signing Day for all high school athletes. It is a monster for coaches, sports writers, athletes and myself (check your Twitter and Facebook feeds).

Bottom line, today is a big day….and I want you to fully grasp how big of a day this is for Rubio Long Snapping and Long Snappers in general.

I received a picture and text from Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of Bama….

He had it sent to him by the top ranked Long Snapper in the country, Cole Mazza. The picture is showing Mazza signing his letter of intent to play at Alabama for the next four years.

Big deal, right?

It gets bigger. Tinker’s text to me read “You did that man…I’m proud of Rubio…You make snappers proud….This picture is unprecedented to long snappers and you know that….congrats man. It is historical and you made that happen. Saban has offered a snapper

Tinker is right. This is historical. Not just for Rubio Long Snapping, but for Long Snappers everywhere. Alabama has never offered a Long Snapper out of high school. Head Coach Nick Saban has never offered a Long Snapper a scholarship out of high school.

Who is next to make history with Rubio Long Snapping?

Cole Mazza Takes Title at 11th Annual Rubio Long Snapping National Event

Rubio Long Snappers have departed from the 11th Annual National Event in Las Vegas and to say the event was a success is the understatement of the world. Long Snappers from all over the country and even the world participated in the two-day event on January 19th and 20th at Faith Lutheran High School.

The Long Snappers competed in various skill competitions and were ultimately narrowed down to 12 finalists. The finalists competed in one last skill competition using a specific finals round target to crown the champion.

That Champion was Alabama commit Cole Mazza. The 6-1 240 pound Mazza is from Liberty High School in Bakersfield. Mazza was offered by many D1 schools including UCLA, Utah and Washington State and will be a key component to the National Champion Crimson Tide in the coming years.

Take a look at Mazza in action a few months back:

Who will win the National Championship game?

Since there are a total of FIVE Rubio Long Snappers between Alabama and Notre Dame, I don’t care who wins!

As always, I am pulling for a 0-0 tie with tons of punts and some great slow motion shots on all the punts!

Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of Alabama chosen for The Senior Bowl!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of the University of Alabama has been selected to play in The Senior Bowl!

According to The Senior Bowl website:

The Senior Bowl is home to a one-of-a-kind NFL Convention. In addition to the two NFL coaching staffs who coach the two Senior Bowl teams each year, over 800 NFL general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, personnel directors, scouts and other front office personnel from the 32 NFL teams annually attend Senior Bowl Week in Mobile.

Coaching staffs for the game each year are selected by the NFL office. In addition to the coaches, each NFL team chosen by the league to coach the Senior Bowl teams also brings its training, video and equipment staffs to the contest to work with the Senior Bowl players and maximize the many benefits that the players will receive by playing in the contest.

Tinker started attending Rubio Long Snapping camps back in 2007 (profile pic is above), dominated the Spring Event in 2008 and ended up a 5 Star Long Snapper that headed to Alabama. He has gone through a ton in his life and just continues to be a positive role model for Long Snappers, and your average Joes, around the U.S.

Here is a video of Tinker in May, on a break from instructing, showing off at the 10th Annual National Kicking and Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas.
