Advice for Current College Athletes from Former College & Pro Athletes

Last week, I posted a blog that was current college freshman Long Snappers giving advice to incoming college freshman Long Snappers. It was great to read and, hopefully, gave some insight to the next batch of dominant college Long Snappers.

I decided to take it a step further and asked several of my former college Long Snappers if they have any advice they would like to give to the current batch of college Long Snappers. There is some absolutely terrific bits of wisdom here and well worth reading.

Here is what they had to offer up…

Justin Drescher – Colorado/New Orleans Saints “Enjoy all aspects of college and be a well rounded individual by the end of your time, because it only lasts 4-5 years! Its a short period of your life where you get to grow from a boy to young man, so cherish each and every moment no matter the difficulties in Football, Academics and Social life!”

Jason Bertoni – Arizona Choose the people you hangout with wisely, pick people that can help you grow and not hold you back. You will not only be judged for your actions but theirs as well.

Jeff Palmer – University of Oregon Embrace the grind with as many classes and tutors as early on as possible in your career so that you can enjoy your experience later in your career. Have fun early on but embrace the grind and accept the heavy workload because it will be rewarding to be an older leader on your team taking fun elective classes, having the younger guys on your team asking you for advice, and having more spare time to start preparing for your future (whether its training for the NFL or networking to find a job).

Tanner Gibas – University of Kansas “Make sure you make friends and get involved in as many things outside of football as possible. You never know when your last play is.”

Brandon Long – Rice University “Best thing you can do is get in with the O-line and avoid being seen as a kicker. Makes life easier. Also, have fun and don’t put added pressure on yourself, everything in athletics is a mind game at some point.”

Carson Tinker – University of Alabama “Know that you aren’t as athletic as everyone but work like you are”

John Finch – Purdue “Realize that you are on the team to do one job and don’t expect any respect or gratitude from anyone until you perform on the field on Saturdays. No one owes you anything. Show up and do your job.”

Neal Dahlman – Bowling GreenKeep education number one, maintain a high GPA. There is life after football. As far as football, treat everyday like an interview, there is always someone out there working just as hard or harder than you. Continue improving to earn or keep your spot, never be complacent.”

Tom Harrington – Western Michigan “Don’t let a coach change anything that they do.  A lot of times coaches want a snapper to change something in their form or the way they snap.  Do what got you to college and continue to work at that.  Most college special teams coaches has no idea about long snapping and how to teach someone.  I know it’s hard to tell your coach no but if its in your best interest then do it.”

Casey Hales – Duke “Take a minute and reflect on the 1st dream you had about being a long snapper in college. What did that dream look like? What did you look forward to most about playing in college? Now, take a moment and think about how that dream has changed or stayed the same.  Are you doing all you can to maximize what you want out of your experience? My advice, take a hard look at how you spend your time. Make the most out of your situation. Take advantage of all the resources around you to make your college football experience the best it can be. Work with Rubio! Spend time with your strength and conditioning coaches, nutritionists, and your academic support staff. You are living the dream right now, be grateful you are where you are and EMBRACE.”

Kevin Ballinger – Purdue “Keep working and have fun. You’re in a very unique position of playing at a high level without people noticing you. Take advantage of every opportunity a regular student does not get. Every student at your school would kill to be in your position. Secondly, work hard. The guys behind you who aren’t playing are working to take your spot. Finch is one of my best friends but my goal everyday was to take his spot on the field. Work so hard that the coaches have no choice but to play you. Have fun when it’s time to have fun, work hard when it’s time to work hard.”

Tyler Schmitt – San Diego St./ Seattle Seahawks “My biggest piece of advice to a college snapper would be to think/ and train like you are a linebacker. Because on punt, you are a linebacker. Your NOT a kicker! Whether its running with the team in the morning, weightlifting, film ect. you need to train like a position player. Not only will you gain respect from other teammates, but your snapping will improve. The biggest advantage will be making tackles, which in a such a competitive position these days, is crucial.”

Evan Jacobsen – New Mexico Always try to perfect your art. You are there to snap so do it correctly. Our season never ends. Challenge yourself. Make your target smaller and smaller each time. Push yourself conditioning and weight room wise. Try to be the strongest player on the team. Always practice blocking because you never know what scheme you will run next year (I changed 4 times). In short, always push yourself and always get better. DO NOT PLATEAU. Do not be satisfied and watch film and critique yourself. Always try and improve. Listen to Rubio.

Zach Nolan – Stanford “Basically, every day is a chance to make an improvement, no matter how big or how small.  It’s a simple idea, but it’s something that really changed my outlook when I really started to think about it.  Everyone’s goal is always to be perfect.  Unfortunately, perfection is something that we can never truly attain.  There are so many things that we need and want to get better at, but if each day you set a goal that you’re going to pick one area that you hope to improve upon and put forth all your effort into that one aspect of your life (whether it’s on the field or off), you can get closer and closer to achieving perfection.  I believe every day is an unbelievable opportunity, and it’s up to you whether you take advantage of that opportunity or let it slip away.”

Mike Zupancic – Eastern Michigan “Never get complacent, if you want to be the best you must constantly work on your weaknesses. Every challenge that you face, bad weather or tough block, use it as an opportunity to become the best.”

Brendan Lopez – Washington Embrace the reality that one day you won’t play football anymore.  Every player has to come to terms with this and the sooner you do it the more successful you will be in the future. Thinking about the future can be very uncomfortable but having a plan and a goal in mind early on is better then trying to figure something out once you get there.  Don’t let playing football deter you from pursuing a career you might think is out of reach.  Apply to the business school, take organic chemistry, strive to be a doctor or an entrepreneur.  Playing football will only enhance these goals because every time you say “I play college football” you will automatically have a leg up on the other guy who didn’t.  Always have a goal and never settle for where you are today.”

Corey Gibas – Texas A&MI have two pieces of Advice for current long snappers. School/Academics- Use all the resources your school and your athletic department provides for you. You have a busy schedule to maintain so lessen your stress level with the help provided. Get all your hard core curriculum classes out of the way so your junior and senior years are easy. Football- Cherish every moment you have left on and off the field. It’s not going to be the practices, workouts, or meetings your going to miss. Once you have ended your career you will miss the locker room, team functions, game day, traveling for away games, and your teammates. Those are the things your going to miss the most so cherish each moment. Take pictures so you can look back at this awesome moment of your life. Also share with people that did not get the opportunity you have received. Give back to the game as well. It’s treated you well during your life time so give back to it in anyway possible. Stay humble and never quit.

Corey Adams – Kansas St. Our very first team meeting in training camp, our coach asked the seniors to get up and say something to the younger players. The first person to stand up was the most respected senior (Jordy Nelson) and the room when completely silent. He was one of the people who let his actions speak louder than his words, so hearing him speak in front of the whole team was rare. The thing he said was “Freshmen, don’t rush to get out of here. Slow down and enjoy every minute with your friends, teammates and brothers. After this, whether you play professionally or get a job in the real world, everything becomes a business. You won’t ever have an atmosphere like this, where you are with your best friends every single day of the week, all working together towards the same goal with the same purpose in mind.” At the time, I was a freshmen thinking I knew everything in the world. I heard what he was saying, but didn’t really listen to his message. Five very short years later, I had been in and out of a couple NFL training camps, and now work as a financial analyst. I quickly realized what Jordy had said at my first ever team meeting in college was dead on. You may be on another team, either in the NFL or corporate world, but you don’t have the bond you have with your teammates in college. They start out as strangers, but quickly turn into lifelong friends.”

PJ Tobyansen – UCLA “The one bit of advice i would like to give to a current college Long Snapper is – enjoying the dedication to preparation. What I mean by that is of course every college longsnapper is dedicated to his craft of Long Snapping. But to understand truly why you are doing things, and to truly enjoy the process will carry these habits latter on in life – to make you truly successful weather you go pro in the NFL or pro in something else. Today I work in the movie business for Marvel – currently working on Iron Man 3. I would not be where I am today without the lessons Rubio taught me, and enjoying the dedication to preparation. As Rubio always says -Taking the time to do things properly – quality reps over quantity.  Practicing, staying late so you truly know the in and outs of your assignments or task.  Muscle memory – doing things the RIGHT WAY over and over and over so when it comes time to shine in a crunch situation you know that you are truly prepared and can truly enjoy the moment.(YOU DONT HAVE TO THINK) If you truly understand this and enjoy this and practice these keys. It will  truly make you successful and let you rise quicker in your career or later in life. Like today working at Marvel people always say I cant believe how young you are. well I owe my success to those hobbits I learned while long snapping in college and truly enjoying my dedication to my preparation. It works! If you dont enjoy it why do it? Only you can make things work. always enjoy what you are doing. Always have a smile on your face, enjoy the moment. (and you can because you do not have to think if you are ready or not)”

Best of the Best

Rubio Long Snapper Matt Bayliss Commits to the University of Texas at San Antonio

Rubio Long Snapper Matt Bayliss (OK, ’13) has committed to the University of Texas at San Antonio as a preferred walk-on!

Bayliss, a TOP 12 member, is a massive talent that turned down several other smaller school scholarships and larger school preferred walk-ons. He chose UTSA for it’s location, solid fan base, move of conference and staff. He should compete for a starting postion immediately in San Antonio.

I am very proud of Bayliss as he has come with his snapping. He has always had the length and now he has the form that enabled to get this opportunity. Great person and I wish him the best.

Congratulations to Matt Bayliss!

So, a College Coach Calls and Says….

Last night, a coach calls me and here is our conversation…..

RubioWhat’s up Coach ________!”

CoachRubio, what’s going on? Is this a good time?”

RubioPerfect. Let it rain. What’s up?”

CoachI am calling to do a background check on a couple of your guys. What can you tell me about the following guys’ personality and how they handle themselves socially…

The rest of the conversation is obviously private. You think coaches only care about how you behave on the field? THINK AGAIN!

Clean up your act and start with social media. Remember, if you retweet something ignorant, YOU are ignorant. If you are tagged in a photo that shows people being wrong, YOU are wrong. If you hang out with morons, YOU are a moron. Blunt, but very, very true.

Trust me, coaches will find out about all of this.

Make social media work for you and not against you

Rubio Long Snapper Scott Daly Earns Honor at Notre Dame

Former top ranked Rubio Long Snapper, TOP 12er and Herbalife 24 Chris Rubio Award winner Scott Daly has been chosen by his teammates to be on Notre Dame’s Unity Council.

The Unity Council, which is made up of 10 players, are leaders and spokespersons for the team. They will sit down with Notre Dame Head Coach Kelly every other week and discuss in house topics and whether something might need to change with the team.

This is obviously quite an honor for Daly being that he is just a freshman and, I hate to even say it, because he is “only” a Long Snapper.

Congratulations to Rubio Long Snapper Scott Daly!

The Mental Focus it Takes to be a GREAT Long Snapper…

Even in non-game winning situations, the Long Snapper is under some pretty high pressure. He has to be concerned with getting the snap count right, making a perfect snap and engaging a block all within seconds. What is the best way to handle the pressure?

For many it takes getting into the right “state” or frame of mind. Most of us go through life letting outside events or other people have control of our frame of mind. It is important to know that YOU can control your state. It is critical for a Long Snapper.

Some will use a physical signal to put themselves in the proper state. It might be a chest pound or a smack to the side of the helmet. This physical signal tells the brain it is time to focus.

Once in the right state of mind, a Long Snapper can recall all of the perfect snaps in previous games and practice. He can quickly focus thoughts on positive energy and visualize a perfect execution. With practice he can break down the elements of a perfect snap in to several steps that are quickly and precisely executed.

Getting into the right state is part art and part science. It is a combination of positive attitude, determination, and self-confidence. It starts with that physical trigger that creates a level of focus and the proper state. It ends with yet another perfect snap.

Want to learn more? Visit our website and find out how Rubio Long Snapping trains Long Snappers to carry this type of focus and frame of mind.

Rubio Long Snapper Niko Walsh Commits to New Mexico St!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Niko Walsh (CA, ’13) has committed to New Mexico St. as a preferred walk-on!

Niko is a very smooth Long Snapper that might have the best PAT snaps in the country. He is like a machine on short snaps and extremely accurate with his long snaps. To say Niko has come a long way with his snapping would be a massive understatement. He started off, let’s say average, but worked right and hard to really maximize his potential with great form and using all of his body when he snaps. He is definitely for this next stage of his life in football.

Niko is not only a terrific Long Snapper, he is also an extremely humorous individual that has been know to drop some excellent rants on Twitter. Quiet when you first speak to him, but wickedly funny when you get to know him.

Congratulations to Niko Walsh!

A Long, Long Road For Rubio Long Snapper Dallas Noriega

A couple years ago, Rubio Long Snapper Dallas Noriega was at the top of his game. He had been with me for quite some time and was now a 5 Star Long Snapper headed for a major D1 University – Arizona St.

He was flying high to say the least. He was dominating camps, a member of the TOP 12 (he even won the annual TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE Belly Flop Contest), a hit with his personality and was even known to bust out a cart wheel now and then. If you have seen Dallas, not a slight figure, you would be even more impressed.

Then, shortly before he was headed off to college, he was called by his new coach and informed that he hadn’t taken the right classes to get into that particular college. His grades and scores were fine, but he still needed to take one additional class to be allowed on the team. Bubble burst.

Dallas would not be going to ASU anytime soon. College football went from a tremendous dream being achieved to a nightmare moving farther and farther away.

Dallas enrolled at a local Junior College and didn’t let his dream stop. He stayed in shape, kept working on his snapping and became even better than before. Schools were knocking on the door. They wanted him on campus immediately. Conversations would be as follows “Rubio, he is a JC kid, he can leave whenever, so we want him now.” Issue, Dallas wasn’t a qualifier out of High School and never submitted the paperwork to do so. Therefore, he HAD TO obtain his A.A. degree from the local JC before moving on. Dallas would have to remain in Junior College for the full two years.

Dallas would not be going to college anytime soon. College football went from a tremendous dream being achieved to a nightmare moving farther and farther away.

Dallas pushed ahead. After a dominant first season, he started off-season training with the team with the new mindset that he would have to stay all two years at his Junior College. He could do it. Nothing would stop him now that everything was so clearly laid out for him now.

In April of 2012, Dallas was driving when another driver ran a red light, crashed into his car and destroyed his ankle. Yet again, Dallas’s dreams of playing college football were slipping away. Dallas, his dreams, his hope and his ankle were crushed. This was the point in a person’s life where they either throw up their hands and say “Why me?!?!” or when they pound their chest and say “Let’s go!!!!”

Dallas chose the latter.

He rehabilitated his ankle like a wild man, stayed positive and NEVER stopped pursuing his dream. Nothing, and I mean nothing, would stop him. His hard work paid off. Earlier this month, Dallas was awarded a scholarship to a 4 year college to play college football!

Dallas NEVER gave up. His dad, Ralph, told me he has never heard Dallas say the words “quit” or “I am tired.” I don’t doubt it.

I could not be more proud of a Long Snapper or person. Dallas is a true inspiration for all and I am proud to say I know him and he is a Rubio Long Snapper.

10 Common Questions Regarding the Spring Vegas Event

1. How do I get invited to the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas? You don’t! It is not an invite only camp. It is a first come, first served Event. You register and you are in.

2. How old do you have to be to attend the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas? All levels of High School through second year of Junior College. I will allow younger if it is pre-approved through me. Seniors should still be attending since we will be right in the middle of the third wave of recruiting.

3. Is the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas only for advanced Long Snappers? NO, it is open to all levels of Long Snappers. The early you go, the better you will be in the long run. Trust me, I have seen it countless times. Don’t be the guy who waits and then blows it because they were too nervous. Go early and get your butterflies knocked out sooner than later.

4. Will there be small group sessions this spring? Yes! There will be a 4-5 pm and 5-6 pm session. They are one hour blocks meant to knock off the rust, get some last minute fine-tuning in and get used to the fields, brand new football and myself.

5. Is there a hotel you recommend for the Long Snappers and their parents? Yes, we have a group rate with the JW Marriott. It is about one mile from the fields and is superb.

6. When should we book flights? Plan on arriving on Friday and either leaving after 7 pm on Sunday evening (camp will end at 5 pm) or Monday morning.

7. Is there a rental car company you recommend? Yes, for rental cars, follow these steps: Go to www.enterprise.com, Fill in the information as dates and times needed, In the optional area you will add L540231 and then click continue, The next screen will ask for a PIN which is RUB, Choose your car and enjoy the discount.

8. If I have spring ball on friday, can I arrive on Saturday morning? Yes, but I MUST be notified as early as possible so I can put you in a later group on Saturday.

9. Why is the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas important? It is a major one for the final recruitment of seniors (look at #2), beyond important for the underclassmen as their recruiting will just be going into high gear and your only chance to be selected to the EVENT ELITE (the EVENT ELITE will join The TOP 12 at the Invite Only TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp this summer in CA)

10. What do I get for attending the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas? The best on Long Snapping instruction in the world, a Rubio Long Snapping shirt, a profile page with Rubio Long Snapping, a YouTube video to be used at your discretion, a recruiting and nutritional seminar at the hotel, a chance to make the EVENT ELITE and the winner of the camp receives one year of free Rubio Long Snapping camps (accommodations and transportation not included).

What Does a Graduating Long Snapper Do Now?

Say you are one of the lucky ones that will be playing football next year for a four year university, what do you do now?

You get better! You don’t rest on your laurels. You make sure you are as prepared as possible when entering college so the coaches know you are serious and ready to take over the reigns for the next two to four years of your life. Nothing will upset a coach more than a recruited athlete coming in unprepared. That is essentially your first impression to the new staff at your new school and that can easily set you up, in the wrong way, for years to come. Don’t be that guy!

Yes, you are allowed to, and could be attending my Long Snapping camps from now until you report to camp for your school….and you should. Going to a camp right before you head off will polish off the rough edges, fine tune you and build your confidence.

You want a more advanced camp with only college level Long Snappers? You can attend the College Camp for Long Snappers on July 19-21 in CA. It will be structured just like the TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp but with no current HS players. All participants will be either 2013/JC heading to a four year university or a current college Long Snappers already doing what you believe, think and hope you are ready for in a couple short months.

Regardless, be prepared and don’t just sit. You got into college, but you have done nothing there….yet. See you soon!

Rubio Long Snapper Emmett Odegard commits to UMASS!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Emmett Odegard (CT, 13) has committed to UMASS as a preferred walk-on!

Emmett, who was just noted in a previous blog, is a terrific Long Snapper and person. He has been with Rubio Long Snapping since 2010, made the TOP 12 last year and can easily go down as one of the hardest workers to improve the most over time. He is a true student of Long Snapping and was dominant at the 11th Annual National Kicking and Snapping Event in Las Vegas a month ago. He made it to the finals and only lost by about one inch. I am extremely impressed with and proud of Emmett! UMASS got a great one!

Congratulations to Emmett Odegard!

Meet the 2013 Members of the TOP 12!

After every National Snapping Event in Las Vegas in January, I choose the TOP 12 underclassmen Long Snappers. They are the best of the best out in Vegas and are selected to participate in the Invite Only TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE (these Long Snappers will be chosen after the Spring Event in Vegas) during the summer. Only the true great ones are allowed to attend the TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp and you must do extremely well in Vegas to be considered. The percent of Long Snappers that have been invited to this camp and continued their careers into college is well over 95%!

If you make this list, you obviously can snap the ball and do it well. Now, I wanted to give you a bit of insight on them off the field. In alphabetical order….
