Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of Alabama chosen for The Senior Bowl!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of the University of Alabama has been selected to play in The Senior Bowl!

According to The Senior Bowl website:

The Senior Bowl is home to a one-of-a-kind NFL Convention. In addition to the two NFL coaching staffs who coach the two Senior Bowl teams each year, over 800 NFL general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, personnel directors, scouts and other front office personnel from the 32 NFL teams annually attend Senior Bowl Week in Mobile.

Coaching staffs for the game each year are selected by the NFL office. In addition to the coaches, each NFL team chosen by the league to coach the Senior Bowl teams also brings its training, video and equipment staffs to the contest to work with the Senior Bowl players and maximize the many benefits that the players will receive by playing in the contest.

Tinker started attending Rubio Long Snapping camps back in 2007 (profile pic is above), dominated the Spring Event in 2008 and ended up a 5 Star Long Snapper that headed to Alabama. He has gone through a ton in his life and just continues to be a positive role model for Long Snappers, and your average Joes, around the U.S.

Here is a video of Tinker in May, on a break from instructing, showing off at the 10th Annual National Kicking and Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas.

What About the Long Snapper?

They rarely get a mention even when they do their jobs perfectly. Make a mistake however, and they are usually blasted on replays. It’s life in the world of perhaps the most under-appreciated position in all of sports. Welcome to the world of football’s Long-Snapper.

Long Snapping only takes place on field goals, extra points, and punts, but there’s probably more to this job than you think. Consider that a Long Snapper is playing the important role of center while he is in. While an extra point or field goal requires a snap of about 7 yards, a punt will require a snap of twice that distance. That’s not all either, after snapping the ball he has to block a player who gets much more playing time than he does, and on punts he also has to run and cover the kick.

You talk about no respect…the highest drafted Long Snapper in the entire history of the NFL was with the 142nd pick. In 2003, the Browns took Ryan Pontbriand in the fifth round that year.

Next time you see those dramatic game winning field goals, take time to pay homage to that invisible gladiator of the gridiron, that unsung pilot of the pigskin, the Long Snapper.

Rubio Long Snapper Graydon Peterson commits to Dartmouth!!!

Rubio Long Snapper and TOP 12er Graydon Peterson (WI, ’13) has committed to play for Dartmouth!

This is a huge honor not only for the athletic side of things, but more so, for the academic side. Not everyone can say they will be playing football at an Ivy League school!

When Graydon told me about his commitment, he said “Took off the pads and went to warm up before snapping to the punters…wearing Top 12 shirt.  A Sailer guy, Henry Woodrow came over to catch, then more punters came over.  Woodrow told them the yellow shirt means “he’s good”  Kicking coach put a stopwatch on me…etc…etc…Long story short, came back with some offers and have decided to commit to….Dartmouth.  Embrace the power of yellow!”

Full embrace to Graydon and “the power of the yellow.” Will you be earning a TOP 12 shirt this January in Vegas?

NFL Long Snapper Prospect Brandon Hartson

NFL Long Snapper prospect Brandon Hartson recently finished his college career with the University of Houston and came out to get a lesson with me in Lewiston, ID to get fine-tuned for his Pro Day at Houston.

Right off the bat, it is easy to see that Brandon passes the eye ball test very quickly. He is an easy 6’2″ and right at 250 with no visible extra weight on him. He is built like a rock and extremely flexible as well. Even though he has gone through a lot in his life, he has one of the best overall attitudes I have ever encountered with a Long Snapper. Brandon is one of those people in life that ooze positivity. Great person to be around and a team will be fortunate to have him on their roster on his demeanor alone.

In regards to snapping, Brandon is very sharp. He snaps a smooth ball that is fast, yet still easy to catch. He averages right at .7 and is extremely accurate, which is easily what the NFL wants in a Long Snapper. I don’t believe I moved my feet one time to catch a ball throughout the entire day. He picked up blocking very well and, once he gets his large hands on you, it is over. PATs were like a machine and there is no issue at all there.

Bottom line, a very solid NFL prospect for Long Snapper that has the ability to play for many years in the league.

Chase has been to several Rubio Long Snapping camps and improves at every one. Per his last evaluation in October….

“He just rips the ball back there to the punter. It is almost shocking how much force he gets on the ball. Spiral is tight and he is snapping with more confidence.”

Chase is a great worker that will do terrific things at Appalachian St. They are lucky to get him. He will be joining Rubio Long Snapper Brett Heimrich who is already on the Mountaineers roster.

The Process of Being Great

EVERYTHING MUST WORK TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE GREATNESS

HEART
Not matter how many people want it for you, if you don’t – it will never happen. You will never reach your potential. If you aren’t the one truly pushing yourself, you will never give it your all. You must have the heart and desire to want it and you have to want it all. It’s actually quite simple, you will be as good, or great, as YOU want to be.

FAMILY
This doesn’t just mean your immediate family. It is anyone that encompasses who you are and will help you along the way. No one achieves greatness on their own. No one. Family can be friends, coaches, teachers, etc. and they are all in your corner. They push you, sometimes nicely and sometimes not so nicely. They know what you need sometimes more than you do. You can survive without them, but it isn’t pleasant and they make your journey much more fruitful and obtainable.

ATHLETICISM
Can definitely put you in the drivers seat but will not keep you there. Eventually, the athleticism will wear off and then you will have to work smarter and not just harder. Your body, which houses your athleticism, will eventually wear down and then what are you stuck with? It is an important gear but not as imperative as others as it won’t keep you in the lead forever.

BRAINS
Really are the glue of it all. Will help you understand what to do and when to do it. Lack of brains will crush your chances for a long and fruitful career. Brains are a major gear and can stop or start the whole process of being great.

PERSONALITY
Getting along with others is not just a good thing, it is a necessity. Friends and family are one thing, but it is others that will enable you to achieve greatness in the long run as well. From trainers to journalists to managers to simply someone you meet along the way. Everyone can offer you something, just as you can offer something to everyone. Your personality will last much longer, and have more of an affect on others, than your athletic ability.

CONFIDENCE
The final touch. What takes a person over the top. The knowing you will dominate. The knowing you will get it done under pressure. The knowing you have “IT.” Confidence is the one thing that can heavily overpower the other gears within this system.

EVERYTHING MUST WORK TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE GREATNESS

Do you have everything working together, in your life, to ensure YOU achieve greatness?

Feel free to add a gear below in the comment section and explain why you feel it is needed to make you great…

Taking the long view of long-snapping

This article was originally posted in the Lewiston Tribune, on Tuesday, December 11th. I was given permission by the editor to cut and paste, so now you can embrace:)

By THEO LAWSON OF THE TRIBUNE

When Chris Rubio considered the idea of forgoing his middle-school teaching profession to teach something that would offer him less initial job security and financial support, he thought long and hard.

Instead of educating 12- and 13-year-olds about the events of the Civil War, he would be instructing them in the fine art of long-snapping, one of football’s most unfamiliar and underrated skills.

That decision, still one Rubio reminisces about, undoubtedly paid off.

The Mr. Rubio who once taught junior-high history and English in Southern California is now Chris Rubio, long-snapping guru.

In a recent speech he gave at Lewis-Clark State College, Rubio voiced the motive that led him to managing a nationally renowned long-snapping “fraternity,” as the expert labels it.

“If I was in that class at 18 or 19 and said, ‘I’m going to start a long-snapping company and I’m going to teach people how to snap a ball 15 yards really, really fast and I’m going to get rid of my teaching job which has good union, good salary, good insurance. And I’m going to throw it all away and let it ride on this,’ I would’ve flunked myself.”

Based in Lewiston, Rubio Long Snapping has become a national brand. Such a national brand that the National High School Player of the Year awards banquet has dedicated the Herbalife 24 Chris Rubio Award in his name. The award annually recognizes the nation’s elite high-school long-snapper.

To add to his reputation, both starting long-snappers that will feature in the forthcoming BCS national championship game between Alabama and Notre Dame were Rubio-taught.

The teacher-turned-snapping expert is debating on whether to attend the national championship game, but if he does, two of the nation’s most historic programs colliding on college football’s most prestigious stage won’t mesmerize Rubio.

Even before a back injury derailed any hope of snapping professionally, Rubio claimed he wasn’t very “footbally” and for the specialist who has worked with five active NFL snappers, that hasn’t changed.

“Even to this day, I’ll ‘TiVo’ some games that have my snappers in them just so I can fast forward to see them. I could care less who wins and loses. I watch a little more football than I used to,” he said.

Rubio is part of a select group of position coaches invited to instruct high-school players at annual camps staged by the nation’s most decorated programs – Oregon, Alabama and LSU, to name a few.

His first experience at LSU was eye-opening, Rubio recalls.

“I remember the first time I went to LSU six years ago or something like that, they were giving us a tour of their facilities and the trophy room and I’m looking and I go, ‘Wow this is a lot of trophies, this is pretty big time.’ And my buddy goes, ‘You know they won the national championship three months ago, right?’ And I go, ‘I had no idea.’ ”

Ironically enough, Les Miles’ program at LSU has picked up a Rubio long-snapper twice in the past three years.

Since 2001, when Rubio received an invitation to assist his former UCLA teammate Chris Sailer at a kicker/punter-specific camp in Las Vegas, the ex-Bruin long-snapper has now instructed more than 175 players.

This year alone, 75 Rubio-trained snappers have either received scholarships or walked on to play football at the collegiate level. The topanked snapper in Rubio’s 2013 class, Cole Mazza, is poised to become the first player ever at his position to receive a scholarship from Alabama’s Nick Saban.

The accolades keep building up for Rubio, yet his prestige and reputation amongst the long-snapping fraternity haven’t outweighed the lives he’s touched, from a nonfootball standpoint.

One of those lives is that of ex-Kansas long-snapper Tanner Gibas, who is more familiar with Chris Rubio the man than Chris Rubio the long-snapping expert.

A product of Rubio Long Snapping and a native of Rubio’s hometown in Covina, Calif., Gibas still works side-by-side with his former middle-school teacher, but not necessarily from a long-snapping perspective.

Rubio’s background is one that few are familiar with. Gibas, 19, has known Rubio for 15 years and felt that his longtime coach’s life story, in addition to his long-snapping business, was something that could be best portrayed through film.

A film studies major at the University of Kansas where he formerly served as the Jayhawks’ starting snapper, Gibas is making a film entitled “The Rubio Project” that is expected to reach various film festivals by May 2014.

“When I first originally thought about doing this, everyone obviously wants to see the long-snapping coach Chris Rubio because he’s doing a remarkable thing,” Gibas said. “And then I thought this needs to be more about him and who he is as a person and how that has shaped him to be the man that he is today.”

While Rubio has sent Tanner and his brother Corey (formerly of Texas A&M) to college to long-snap, Tanner Gibas has been more appreciative of the lessons that don’t involve a pigskin and a football field.

“I think the biggest thing he’s taught me is confidence, whether that’s through life or long-snapping. As long as you know you can do it, you usually end up doing it through the power of confidence,” Gibas said.

And of course the film will highlight the prestige Rubio has gained as the nation’s No. 1 long-snapping instructor – how he’s influenced the evolution of a position that didn’t offer full college scholarships not that long ago.

With the growth of his business, Rubio has raised awareness amongst college coaches who are now eager to recruit the perfect snapper. As more and more games rely on last-ditch field goals, the demand for long-snappers has seen an exponential increase.

Matt Fortin, the starting long-snapper for the University of Virginia, credits a vast majority of that to the exposure Rubio has given to the position.

“I didn’t ever think it would get this big . I think it really was Rubio growing his business and marketing it, showing coaches how important specialists are,” Fortin said. “Even at the professional level how many games come down to field goals and you want a guy who you know is going to get the job done?”

Now an assistant to Rubio Long Snapping, Fortin appeared in all 12 of Virginia’s 2012 games and snapped on every field-goal attempt and punt.

The recruiting process didn’t go so swimmingly for Fortin, who at 5-feet-9 is classified as undersized in the long-snapping world.

“The biggest thing for me was my size . The special-teams coach (at Virginia) called Rubio and Rubio was kind of the one that gave him word that I could compete at the next level, so Virginia took a shot at me with my size,” Fortin said.

Rubio’s inspiration isn’t limited to the long-snappers he’s taken in. Players, parents and filmmakers have contributed to “The Rubio Project,” and 123 donors have given $22,110, which will help fund the production and shooting of the documentary.

The support Rubio has received still leaves him in awe.

“There’s one parent, her kid is a sixth-grader, they’ve been to two camps . She donated $1,000,” he said.

The man who has instructed hundreds of the nation’s elite long-snappers since 2001 lives a reserved life in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, an area he appreciates for its serenity and natural beauty.

The million-dollar question that he receives more frequently than any other, “Why Lewiston?” is one that he guarantees will be answered in “The Rubio Project.”

But the Southern California native still has one wish – to live in an even less populated area.

If you are a kicker that does an interview….

and doesn’t immediately, AND continuously, praise your Long Snapper throughout the interview, you should be forced to take 25 snaps from your Long Snapper…
at no more than 5 yards away…
with your hands behind your back…
while blind folded…
with gale force winds increasing the speed…
in the cold!!

That is all:)

The three finalists for the Chris Rubio Award for top Long Snapper were Cole Mazza (CA, ’13), Gabriel Miller (IN, ’13) and Scott Sypniewski (IL, ’13).

Wyatt Schmidt & Cole MazzaThe weekend started off with the finalists that were flown into LAX being picked up in limos and driven to the JW Marriott. Once there, they, and a guest of their choice, relaxed in their rooms and waited for dinner at the ESPN Zone. The first night’s dinner was casual with everyone getting to know one another and to finally see the trophies they worked so hard to hopefully take home the next day.

Saturday started off with a breakfast at the Herbalife building with a presentation on nutrition and supplements. Following the breakfast, the finalists, along with Chris Sailer and Chris Rubio, were driven in a limo to Saddle Ranch restaurant on Sunset Blvd. Needless to say, they ate and ate and ate some more. At 6:00 pm, the Awards show officially started in the Herbalife building at L.A. Live. Everyone in attendance was formally dressed, looking sharp as the tension filled the air.

Master of Ceremonies Wayne Cook of Fox Sports West did a tremendous job as he brought up guest speakers and conducted interviews with the finalists on stage. After much adieu, the winner of the Chris Rubio Award for top high school Long Snapper in the country was presented to Cole Mazza and the winner of the top high school Placekicker in the country was presented to Wyatt Schmidt!

Rubio Long Snapper Trey Lamastus commits to the University of Alabama at Birmingham!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper and TOP 12er Trey Lamastus (LA, ’13) has committed to the UAB as a preferred walk-on!

Lamastus is known for his incredible drive, always improving and terrific flowing hair. He is built well, has a solid frame and is expected to start his first year on campus.

When I was notified of his commitment, Lamastus said to me “Thank you for everything. Without you I wouldn’t even know how to pick up a ball. Thanks Rubio. Really wouldn’t know where I’d be without you right now. Not even as a snapper but a person also. You’ve always been there for me!!”

Love it…absolutely love it!

Look for Chase Dominguez to Excel at the Next Level!

Rubio Long snapper Chase Dominguez recently earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Utah to become their Long Snapper. As far as Rubio Long Snapping goes, Dominguez is virtually flawless in all aspects of the position. Chase is long and athletic and has the frame to become a fantastic blocker. Chase is smooth under pressure, concentrating on the mechanics of snapping in the toughest situations. There is no doubt that Dominguez will be a huge asset to the University of Utah’s college football program as a Long Snapper, as long as he stays healthy and continues to practice. His size, intelligence and talent makes him a player to watch in the future.

Rubio Long Snapper Jeff Overbaugh dominating at SDSU

Dominating Rubio Long Snapper, Jeff Overbaugh is a five star long snapper for the class of 2012.  Jeff is originally from Anchorage, Alaska where he made ESPN’s high school all-Alaska team, helping his team, the Robert Service High School Cougars to a 10-0-1 overall record in 2011.  Ranked #3 overall in the country by Rubio Long Snapping, The true freshman starter, now playing for San Diego State, heated up in summer camp and didn’t cool off. With twelve regular season games in the books, freshman Jeff Overbaugh is 105 for 105 in all snap attempts.

Jeff is my third Rubio Long Snapper in a row to get picked up by and dominate at San Diego State.  Tyler Schmitt was my first, who has now gone on to be drafted by the Seahawks, and Aaron Brewer was second, who currently is with the Broncos.  Rivals.com said, “Instructor Chris Rubio who rated Jeff a five star D1 ready long snapper must be smiling knowing he got it right.”  Yes, yes I am smiling!  The success of my students is what drives me.

Watch the clip and see for yourself!

Which One Are You?

There are several different types of people in the world, but I tend to break it down into two categories: givers and takers.

Now, before you fly off the handle and think of me as an intensely greedy person, let me explain. I don’t mean “give” in the literal sense. I am not talking about the person actually giving me something tangible. I am talking about how they give me something. The provide me with something. They enlighten me with something. That something could be an open ear, a laugh, a story, a wink, a nod, a hug, or maybe even some confidence. Those are the people you want to surround yourself with AND the person you want to be. You want people to be around you because you can provide them with something that you can’t even put a price tag on. That is when you know you are a success.

On the flip side, you have those in your life that tend to simply always need something from you, the takers. Yet again, I am not speaking of only tangible items that you can hold onto (but they tend to want those, too). I am speaking of people that always want you to listen to them or want your time or want you to hear about their day or want you to help them, but, for one reason or another, never have anytime for you. At times, those that take are not only people, they can be jobs, situations, sites, or companies.

Now, think about your circle of friends, teammates, co-workers, businesses you associate with, your job and your family members. Which ones are givers and which ones are takers?

Look at yourself.  Are you yourself, a giver or taker? Is it time to re-evaluate others and yourself? Well, what are you waiting for? You are not getting any younger and life is too short to surround yourself with and/or be a “taker.” Like they say, the time is now.

Do the world, and yourself, a favor….surround yourself with, and be, a giver.

So, what is it…….are you a giver or a taker?_________________________________________________________________

11th Annual Contest!

If you have been following me on Twitter and Facebook for the past couple years, you know I always start the day with an inspirational quote to get the day going in a positive direction.

You also know that I love pictures and will use them to motivate you. Bottom line, I love a good quote and pics and I want you to incorporate one of them into earning a free trip to Vegas.

Your assignment(s), if you choose to accept one, is to either…

or

Print a picture that has motivated you in your Long Snapping and fully explain to me why it has motivated you (No, You can’t use the one below)

Please note for essay: I have said CREATE a quote. That does not mean searching the internet to find one. I want you to be creative (get it) and use your head and what motivates you. On that note, if you know someone personally (family, friend, etc.) that has created one, you can embrace theirs if you choose to for this contest. The Mentality of a Long Snapper

To be the best Long Snapper, you have to have several physical qualities that I have laid in a very clear fashion in a previous blog. It is straight-forward, easy to understand and, one would think, the obvious way to be the perfect Long Snapper.

Not true.

More and more, I am seeing that being able to snap a ball really fast and accurate is great for being a “practice hero” but to be a true great one, you have to have the proper mentality of a Long Snapper. You have to have something I call “Lazy Confidence.”

“Lazy Confidence” is having an extreme amount of confidence in yourself, but, not needing it turned on continuously. Most football players listen to some pretty intense music prior to the game. I don’t believe a Long Snapper should. I believe they don’t need to be that hyped and, if they are, it would end up hurting them, their beautiful craft and their time in the game. Long Snappers with too much adrenaline often have the ball fly over the punter and/or holder. While a Long Snapper with too much rage, often has the ball go low or wobble since they grip too hard and hurt the ball. A Long Snapper must remain calm. Hold in their emotions. Dominate their feelings and know that they will be ready when their time comes in the game. A Long Snapper must ease into the game. Be relaxed, be calm. Have the confidence within themselves to KNOW they will do their job once their time has come. (In case you are wondering, this would be a song that I used to listen to prior to Sailer and I dominating)

I heard a college coach refer to Long Snappers as a sniper. That is beyond true. You sit, you wait, you have one job, one shot. You take your shot. You are done. You sit and wait again for your next shot. This is where “Lazy Confidence” comes in. Unlike a linebacker, who must be “on” throughout the whole game, a Long Snapper can have upwards of 40 minutes without even stepping on the field. You simply can’t have that much bravado flowing and heart pounding without doing something to release it. Hence, all other positions can be filled with rage and anger throughout the game as they always have another play waiting to release it. A Long Snapper  doesn’t.

A Long Snapper must bottle up their confidence, corral it, KNOW it is there and release it as they stroll on the field to dominate their one very specific job. They know they must approach the ball, grab the ball, look upside down and backwards, take a deep breath, start the beautiful chain of events called their form to create the snap. At this point, their confidence is exploding at the seems. A great Long Snapper KNOWS the process is going to run smoothly as they have harnessed all their confidence for this one particular moment.  They have a great snap, walk of the field and let it all build back up for that one particular play they will be back in the game. Could be in five minutes or it could be in an hour. Doesn’t matter. What does matter is their Lazy Confidence will peak at just the right time each and every snap.

Lazy Confidence is why I actually like to see my Long Snappers smile, have a good time and enjoy their time snapping. A great Long Snapper can be amongst friends at a camp, lesson or event and be jovial, yet still let their confidence peak as they approach the ball. The best Long Snappers have this ability. They have the skill level to be smiling and talking one second, to trying to put a ball through the punter the next. This is Lazy Confidence and I love when my Long Snappers achieve this status.

A great Long Snapper, with the perfect form AND with the right attitude, knows there is simply no way they can even have a bad snap, so there is no reason to even let it creep into their mind.
