10 Common Questions Regarding the Spring Vegas Event

1. How do I get invited to the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas? You don’t! It is not an invite only camp. It is a first come, first served Event. You register and you are in.

2. How old do you have to be to attend the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas? All levels of High School through second year of Junior College. I will allow younger if it is pre-approved through me. Seniors should still be attending since we will be right in the middle of the third wave of recruiting.

3. Is the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas only for advanced Long Snappers? NO, it is open to all levels of Long Snappers. The early you go, the better you will be in the long run. Trust me, I have seen it countless times. Don’t be the guy who waits and then blows it because they were too nervous. Go early and get your butterflies knocked out sooner than later.

4. Will there be small group sessions this spring? Yes! There will be a 4-5 pm and 5-6 pm session. They are one hour blocks meant to knock off the rust, get some last minute fine-tuning in and get used to the fields, brand new football and myself.

5. Is there a hotel you recommend for the Long Snappers and their parents? Yes, we have a group rate with the JW Marriott. It is about one mile from the fields and is superb.

6. When should we book flights? Plan on arriving on Friday and either leaving after 7 pm on Sunday evening (camp will end at 5 pm) or Monday morning.

7. Is there a rental car company you recommend? Yes, for rental cars, follow these steps: Go to www.enterprise.com, Fill in the information as dates and times needed, In the optional area you will add L540231 and then click continue, The next screen will ask for a PIN which is RUB, Choose your car and enjoy the discount.

8. If I have spring ball on friday, can I arrive on Saturday morning? Yes, but I MUST be notified as early as possible so I can put you in a later group on Saturday.

9. Why is the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas important? It is a major one for the final recruitment of seniors (look at #2), beyond important for the underclassmen as their recruiting will just be going into high gear and your only chance to be selected to the EVENT ELITE (the EVENT ELITE will join The TOP 12 at the Invite Only TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp this summer in CA)

10. What do I get for attending the 11th Annual National Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas? What Does a Graduating Long Snapper Do Now?

Say you are one of the lucky ones that will be playing football next year for a four year university, what do you do now?

You get better! You don’t rest on your laurels. You make sure you are as prepared as possible when entering college so the coaches know you are serious and ready to take over the reigns for the next two to four years of your life. Nothing will upset a coach more than a recruited athlete coming in unprepared. That is essentially your first impression to the new staff at your new school and that can easily set you up, in the wrong way, for years to come. Don’t be that guy!

Yes, you are allowed to, and could be attending my Long Snapping camps from now until you report to camp for your school….and you should. Going to a camp right before you head off will polish off the rough edges, fine tune you and build your confidence.

You want a more advanced camp with only college level Long Snappers? You can attend the College Camp for Long Snappers on July 19-21 in CA. It will be structured just like the TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp but with no current HS players. All participants will be either 2013/JC heading to a four year university or a current college Long Snappers already doing what you believe, think and hope you are ready for in a couple short months.

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Emmett Odegard (CT, 13) has committed to UMASS as a preferred walk-on!

Emmett, who was just noted in a previous blog, is a terrific Long Snapper and person. He has been with Rubio Long Snapping since 2010, made the TOP 12 last year and can easily go down as one of the hardest workers to improve the most over time. He is a true student of Long Snapping and was dominant at the 11th Annual National Kicking and Snapping Event in Las Vegas a month ago. He made it to the finals and only lost by about one inch. I am extremely impressed with and proud of Emmett! UMASS got a great one!

After every National Snapping Event in Las Vegas in January, I choose the TOP 12 underclassmen Long Snappers. They are the best of the best out in Vegas and are selected to participate in the Invite Only TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE (these Long Snappers will be chosen after the Spring Event in Vegas) during the summer. Only the true great ones are allowed to attend the TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp and you must do extremely well in Vegas to be considered. The percent of Long Snappers that have been invited to this camp and continued their careers into college is well over 95%!

New College Camp Announced!

Rubio Long Snapping and Chris Sailer Kicking will be running the University of Washington’s Specialist Camp on June 17, 2013 in Seattle, WA.

The Huskies will be the 6th college camp we will be running across the country. Others that we will be running are LSU (June 1 and July 13), Texas A&M (June 6th), Alabama (June 8th), UCLA (June 10th) and Oregon (June 15th).

As with all college camps that we are running, you will need to register for it on their website and not ours.

The Importance of Repetitions and a Performance Mindset in Long Snapping

Three (must have) keys to success in Long Snapping are good instruction, practice and repetition, and most importantly – trust in your skills.

Repetitions train the mind and body to learn a specific skill set like Long Snapping. It allows you to execute the perfect snap time and time again, because your body is essentially programmed this way.

There is a false assumption about learning a new technique such as Deep Snapping and Accuracy that athletes should be able to apply it right away. Likewise, some players believe that they should be able to make adjustments in their game, and have it pay off right away. Change doesn’t happen overnight. When you expect change to happen overnight, you are setting yourself up for failure. Athletes must practice what they learn in order to put it into action. Why? Old habits are hard to change. So anytime you learn something new (or teach something new), it takes a lot of repetition to change.

Repetition trains the body to mechanically achieve the desired result of a “perfect snap”, but the mind is a whole other mechanism that is as equally important.

You might have outstanding form or technique, but you must trust in what you have learned in practice in order to apply it in competition. A lack of trust in ones skills is the top reason Long Snappers can’t repeat – in competition – what they do easily in practice every day.

Several mental barriers can get in the way:

Fear of failure
Perfectionism
High expectations
Focusing on results, rather than the process
Pressure of the moment

The concept of trust applies universally from youth to professional Long Snappers. To perform your absolute best – with consistency – you must trust in what was learned from practice.

So, how do we trust our skills in competition?

First, overcome the mental barriers mentioned above and perform at a high level. This is called the performance mindset.

Top Long Snappers have both a training/work mindset and a performance mindset. When you combine the two you develop a “flow” that allows your body to almost effortlessly execute at the highest level.

Change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes good instruction, practice and repetition, and trust in your skills to be a top Long Snapper.

Rubio Long Snapper Joe Marvin of Penn St. Participates in a Wonderful Event!

Rubio Long Snapper Joe Marvin of Penn. St participated in the THON Event this weekend at Penn St.

According to the THON website, “THON was first organized in 1973 by a group of students looking to add excitement to a dreary February in central Pennsylvania, and for a way to give back to the community. Today, Penn State’s THON continues to be the longest dance marathon in the country lasting 46 hours. THON has grown to engage more than 15,000 students each year and has inspired other university, high school, middle school, and elementary school students across the nation to start dance marathons of their own all in the hopes of conquering pediatric cancer!”

This is obviously an absolutely terrific cause and I am impressed and proud that Joe would be a part of it. Well done to Rubio Long Snapper Joe Marvin!

Jahnke (pronounced yawn-kee) is an excellent Long Snapper that uses all of his body when he snaps. He was winner of the Nike Fall Camp in IL for the Fall of 2011. Not the biggest man in the world, but so good technically that he more than makes it up for it with his terrific form.

2014 Long Snappers may now celebrate Rankuary!

The rankings are completed for the class of 2014 Long Snappers post the 11th Annual National Kicking and Snapping Event in Las Vegas. This class was extremely tricky considering how many stepped up and showed me they belong in the TOP 12. Trust me when I tell you, that list was not easy nor was ranking this class…hence, why it took me the longest. Not one Long Snapper is safe with their ranking in this group and the Spring Event in Las Vegas is going to be a flat out battleground for them.

National Signing Day 2013 – Rubio Long Snapping Dominates

National College Signing Day for 2013 has concluded and once again Rubio Long Snapping is in the middle of the action. Alabama, USC, Nebraska, and Michigan top the list of schools that have received commitments from Rubio Long Snappers.

6′ 2″ 241 lb. Cole Mazza from Bakersfield, CA committed to the Crimson Tide as one of 25 commitments to the nation’s number one college football program. Originally committed to UCLA Mazza de-committed from the Bruins when it became clear that he was the number one long snapper prospect for D1 college football programs. Chris Rubio isn’t surprised noting in an interview with Alabama website AL.com that “I can honestly say I have never seen such an overall dominant performance by a long snapper. There was no doubt he was the best in the country. Mazza is as good, if not better, than advertised. If he continues at this pace with his snapping and his attitude, there is no telling how far he can go.”

Other promising Rubio Long Snapping alumni include Zach Smith to USC, Chase Domiguez to Utah, Gabriel Miller to Nebraska, Scott Sypniewski to Michigan. Brendan Turelli to Wyoming, Mike Lizanich to Tulane and Tucker Estheridge to Louisiana Tech. Rubio Long Snapping Makes History!

As you already know, today is National Signing Day for all high school athletes. It is a monster for coaches, sports writers, athletes and myself (check your Twitter and Facebook feeds).

Bottom line, today is a big day….and I want you to fully grasp how big of a day this is for Rubio Long Snapping and Long Snappers in general.

I received a picture and text from Rubio Long Snapper Carson Tinker of Bama….

He had it sent to him by the top ranked Long Snapper in the country, Cole Mazza. The picture is showing Mazza signing his letter of intent to play at Alabama for the next four years.

Big deal, right?

It gets bigger. Tinker’s text to me read “You did that man…I’m proud of Rubio…You make snappers proud….This picture is unprecedented to long snappers and you know that….congrats man. It is historical and you made that happen. Saban has offered a snapper”

Tinker is right. This is historical. Not just for Rubio Long Snapping, but for Long Snappers everywhere. Alabama has never offered a Long Snapper out of high school. Head Coach Nick Saban has never offered a Long Snapper a scholarship out of high school.

Arnaud had several smaller school offers but decided he wanted to attend his dream school and he will be a Wildcat in the fall.

Arnaud is a very strong Long Snapper that is coachable. Very solid pick up for Arizona.

Rubio Long Snapper John Wirtel has committed to Kansas!

5 Star Rubio Long Snapper John Wirtel (IL, ’13) has committed the University of Kansas as a preferred walk-on!

John came off a terrific Vegas Event where he was snapping with tremendous confidence and excellent form. He is one of the smoothest Long Snappers in his class and this opportunity for him is very well deserved.

Per the Rubio Long Snapping website, “Wirtel is now ready for the next level. He has great length and a solid frame that could easily put on 30 lbs. He listens well and is very coachable. Snaps a nice, smooth ball that is on target. Speed is at the D1 level when he snaps the ball hard, which is pretty much every single time now (and I love it). He moves well on his feet and his going to be a very accurate/consistent Long Snapper at the next level. Not flashy, but he doesn’t need to be as a Long Snapper. Excellent work ethic.”

He will be joining Rubio Long Snapper Justin Carnes at Kansas and looks to fill in his shoes after this season.

So, You Didn’t Make The TOP 12…now what?

For the past 2 weeks, you have been watching the TOP 12 Long Snappers get chosen one by one. Nightly, you stared at your Twitter feed or Facebook at approximately 5 pm pst waiting for the inevitable clue to be dropped. Each day, one person was ecstatic while countless others felt the opposite emotions. Last night, the final TOP 12er was chosen and a balloon was popped for many 2014, 2015 and even some 2016 Long Snappers. Now what?

Couple ways to look at it….

You can be upset with me for not selecting you. You can be upset with yourself for not performing when it counted. You can even find a way to blame others, but, it is ultimately on you. The only thing you can control is how hard and smart you work. Everyone in Vegas is competing for the same spots. Don’t let anybody outwork you and you will see different results.

You need to use this as motivation to make sure you perform better. This is all up to you. The choice is yours.

If you are a Long Snapper that strives to be the best, you want to be at that TOP 12 camp this summer. Any single athlete that has been there (scholarship Long Snappers, All-Americans, NFL players) will tell you it is, by far, the best camp they have ever been to in their life. What you need to do is get back on the horse. Work smarter and harder. Your opportunity is waiting for you in May at the Spring Event in Las Vegas.

At the Spring Event, I choose the EVENT ELITE. The EVENT ELITE is the best of the best from Vegas in May. They join the TOP 12 to form the TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE Camp on June 21-23, 2013 in Los Angeles. There is no set number for the EVENT ELITE. I could choose one Long Snapper or I can choose 20. It all depends on the talent. I don’t choose just to choose. It would make me look ignorant in the end. If I say you belong at that camp, you are one of the best in the world. This is a true invite only camp. I do NOT just hand out invites to get people to come to it. That would give me no credibility. I choose the best because they are the best. They will represent the TOP 12, EVENT ELITE and Rubio Long Snapping the best in the future.

Are you one of them? Time to decide. Prove to me, and the rest of the world, that you belong.

Or don’t.

The 12th TOP 12er is Liam McCullough!

The 12th, and final, Long Snapper to be named to the exclusive TOP 12 is Liam McCullough (OH, ’15)!

Liam is the only Long Snapper from the class of 2015 that was chosen for this elite group and it is VERY well deserved. Liam came out to the 11th Annual National Event in Las Vegas and was beyond dominant from start to finish. He averaged sub .7 for a 15 yard snap and I didn’t see a bad ball all weekend. He has increased his size and is snapping with a ton of confidence.

Once again, congratulations to the final member of the TOP 12 – Liam McCullough!
