Happy Ranksgiving to the 2017 GA Long Snappers

The rankings are completed for ALL  2017 Long Snappers and Future Stars that participated in the Rubio Long Snapping Summer Camp in GA.

Next ranking opportunity in GA will be on November 23 and at VEGAS XXV.

KEY POINTS:

  • My rankings are NOT done just from The Rubio Target
  • My rankings are NOT done from some mathematical formula.
  • My rankings ARE done by me and only me. That is why they take a good amount of time. (Think of it this way, it takes MONTHS to build a Rolls Royce but only hours to build an average car)
  • My rankings are based off of this blog I wrote about what makes a Long Snapper great.
  • If you would like anything added to your profile page, simply email me (Rubio@RubioLongSnapping.com) the information and consider it done.
  • All Long Snappers are ranked after their first fall camp of their freshman year in high school.

A Long Snapper has the ability to adjust their ranking anytime I see them LIVE, not on video.

We Can Do More to Support Our Young Athletes

Here is an article that I had published in the Lewiston Tribune on June 5, 2013 that I thought everyone might like to check out. Enjoy!

Imagine an extremely large city. A city bustling with restaurants, entertainment and sporting events. This city has hundreds of high schools, countless students, tons of possibilities. People are everywhere and there is always something to do.

Throughout the year, the city’s population continuously huddles and rallies to support its local teams and, in correlation, the student bodies.

The cheering just depends on the season. In the fall, it’s football. In the winter, it’s wrestling and basketball. In the spring, it’s baseball, softball, track and golf. Even one of the colleges in the city has a festival of sorts for a spring time sport. The massive metropolis embraces it all.

The restaurants in the city work together to support the young athletes. To increase attendance at the games, the restaurants in proximity to the school playing offer discounts if a customer brings in a ticket stub from the game they just attended.

During the week of the game, the restaurant may even have highlights from the previous game playing on its waiting room TV. This is simple to do since the nearby high school’s media class supplies the tape to the restaurants. They work together for one common goal.

Not to be outdone, the school’s events offer a discount to anyone who shows a receipt from the collaborating restaurant(s) from the day of the game. They work together for one common goal.

Games, no matter the sport, become events for each and every family in the large city.

Everyone is working together to build spirit and pride in the youth. They, the adults, know that the next generation will be better off with support from all generations and, in turn, it will trickle down to even the younger generations. The more the adults show the students they are behind them, the more the students want to give the adults something to support. It is one big, fantastic cycle.

Schools support the restaurants, the restaurants support the schools. Even the local high school coaches go down to help out or just be seen at the elementary and junior high practices. The youngest kids love this and so do the parents. It shows the coaches truly care and it only takes a couple of minutes of their day.

Everyone is helping one another in this immense city. As hard as it is, they all work together.

Now, imagine the city is smaller … much smaller.

Instead of hundreds of high schools, thousands and thousands of students and countless restaurants, there are just a handful of high schools, a mere couple of thousand students and a spattering of restaurants.

Imagine a community like ours. With a much smaller number of schools, students and businesses, it would be much easier for everyone to work together to put overflowing pride back into the community, the schools and, most importantly, the children.

But you don’t even have to imagine. This is happening in communities all across the country.

Why aren’t we doing it here?

Key Questions to Ask a College Coach

I have been getting a lot of emails, texts and calls about what to say to a college coach once you get a hold of them or they of you.  Some pretty basic questions to ask, but, I have to warn you, you might not like the “answers.”

Question you should ask but WON’T get a straight answer:

Player – Coach, are you recruiting anyone else at my position?

This is a great question but more likely than not, the coach will lie to you and say no one else. And, they have no reason to tell you. Think about it, would you be completely honest with a girl if you asked her to prom and she asked if there was anyone else you were considering asking? Didn’t think so.

Questions you should ask and NEED to get a straight answer:

Player – Coach, if I am preferred walk-on, when exactly will I report to camp, does this include my admission to school and when exactly when will I be put on scholarship?

Major questions to ask and you definitely need to find out the answers. You want to be brought in asap and if you aren’t, you need to find out why. Most likely they have another guy they didn’t tell you about and this could be an issue moving forward. Next, you want to make sure it is very clear when you will be put on scholarship. Is it going to be right after your first start? Is it going to be a semester after your first start? Is it going to be when the senior graduates? Is it going to be one year after you start? Use the word exactly and find out the specifics with the coach. Don’t let them fluff an answer.

Question you want to ask but SHOULDN’T EVEN BOTHER expecting a straight answer:
Player – Coach, will you be there all four/five years I am in school?

The coach will answer YES but there is no way he is being completely honest with you. If something better coaching wise comes up, they are gone (and they should be…this is their job and their livelihood). Remember, never, ever choose a college based on the coach.

Average Long Snapper Salary in the NFL

In this day and age of the NFL player salaries have increased drastically and the guaranteed amounts have as well. For this past 2012 season the Rookie NFL minimum salary was $390,000.

Long Snappers are no exception. Jon Condo of the Oakland Raiders is the highest paid Long Snapper in the NFL at a base salary of $1,200,000 per year. The list goes on with the top ten highest paid Long Snappers all making over $500,000 per year.  Former Rubio Long Snapper and current Houston Texan Jon Weeks made $540,000 in 2012.

With the average length of career for Long Snappers being much higher than your average player, Long Snappers stand to earn a healthy living for many years. Obviously training, precision and health play a major role in long term careers.

Rubio Long Snapping places many Long Snappers in the NFL and is the key to helping them create these long term careers.

11th Annual National Event in Las Vegas – STATS

Last weekend, January 19-20, in Las Vegas, the largest Long Snapping Event took place in the world.

Saturday was filled with the best instruction with a 3 to 1 ratio of Long Snappers to instructors and Sunday was filled with competition. Long Snappers tested on The Rubio Target, ran 40 yard dashes, were filmed for YouTube, timed by Rubio and did live punts/pats. The weekend was a smashing success, yet again, as the reviews keep coming in from all over the world.

The winner of Event was Cole Mazza (CA. ’13)! To say Mazza was dominant throughout the whole weekend would be a tragic understatement. He was beyond impressive all when you saw him in person and, even more so, when you look at the stats.

Speaking of those stats, here you go……

Long Snappers Average Speeds
Long Snappers Scores on The Target
Long Snappers RSI Scores
Long Snappers 40 Yard Times

The spring schedule for Rubio Long Snapping is already up and summer camps will be posted soon. Be sure to follow on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

YouTube
ALL of the YouTube videos are up for the Long Snappers from the 11th Annual Event in Las Vegas. To view them, simply go the Rubio Long Snapping YouTube channel and type in the Long Snapper’s name you’d like to embrace. That should give you a list of that Long Snapper’s videos that he has done with me. If you are still having troubles, type in “Rubio Long Snapping, Name of Long Snapper, 11th Annual Event” and this should do it.

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER:

  • Anytime you go to a Rubio Long Snapping camp, you get another YouTube video made for you.
  • All of these videos will be posted on your profile within two more weeks.
  • Yes, you can use these videos for your own recruiting purposes and you should as it shows credibility from me and not some Average Joe making it.
  • No, I don’t know how to download them but I bet Google does:)

The 5 Star Long Snapper

In the past, I have described to you what it takes to be a great Long Snapper. When you combine all of those factors, you create the ultimate Long Snapper….you create the 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper.

Please notice, I didn’t just write a 5 Star Long Snapper. I wrote a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper. There is a difference.

The term/prize/accomplishment of 5 stars is thrown around a bit too much, and too easily, these days. It has become almost like a standing ovation at an awards show or an encore at a concert, it has become expected. And, when something is expected, it is shocking when it doesn’t happen. People can’t grasp the concept that such a high honor is not something that is just given, it is earned. It takes a great amount of skill, work and dedication.

One of the biggest “complaints” I receive from parents and Long Snappers is that they don’t understand how their child/them is NOT a 5 Star for me if someone else has them as such. Simple, they just aren’t a 5 Star Long Snapper…yet. My rankings are my rankings. I do them myself. I take great pride in them. I travel to all my own camps and see everything. I don’t rank off a Target, charting or some sort of made up mathematical formula. I know what it takes to snap at the next level and I know what the college and pro coaches want in a Long Snapper. There is a reason my top Long Snappers are always with the top programs.

I see the most Long Snappers in the country…by far. Therefore, being a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper is an actual accomplishment. A 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper combines all of the aspects that make up a great Long Snapper (you better know them by now) with the fact, that in my eyes, you could play a college game tonight…let alone in a year or two.

Being a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper is something to take pride in. You have put in the right work and accomplished a real goal. It was not handed to you and it was out of real field of athletes.

Will you be the next 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper, a true and real accomplishment.

Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping Alums Square off in Denver this Weekend!

This weekend’s Divisional AFC Playoff game in Denver, CO featuring the Baltimore Ravens vs. the Denver Broncos includes two Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping alums. The featured alums are both rookies and stars in the making.

Justin Tucker, Kicker for the Baltimore Ravens is having a phenomenal season and was just a few votes away from being selected for the Pro Bowl. Tucker has connected on 30 of 33 field goals this year and has been a reliable asset on special teams for the AFC North Champs Ravens.

Denver Broncos Long Snapper Aaron Brewer is another standout Rookie out of San Diego State. Brewer has started all 16 games this season and will look for his first playoff victory this weekend. Brewer beat out veteran Long Snapper Lonie Paxton in training camp and has never looked back.

Look for these two Rookies in the game’s most critical moments to see who comes out on top.

Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping are proud of the success of these two great football players on and off the field.

Good Luck guys!

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Jeff Palmer of the Oregon Ducks sets record

Long time Rubio Long Snapper Jeff Palmer will be setting a record for the University of Oregon tonight in the Fiesta Bowl, as he plays in his 52nd game for the Ducks!

That stat alone is simply amazing, but when you combine it with the fact that Palmer is 5’10” and 190 lbs, it is down right astonishing.

Palmer is someone who many, except for yours truly, thought was simply too small to play at the next level. Not only has he played, he has set a record for most games played at Oregon, and if I am not mistaken, he might have the most plays in NCAA history since he has been on countless pats for the Ducks. As you know, Oregon tends to score pretty darn quickly and the guy who has been snapping all of the extra points for the last four years is……..Jeff Palmer.

Palmer has been with Rubio Long Snapping since 2005. He was, and continues to be, one of the best athletes the Long Snapping world has ever seen as you can see below…..

I am very proud of all that Palmer has done and will continue to do with his life. If you ever get to meet him, you will understand how fantastic he truly is.

2012 Herbalife 24 High School Football Awards

This past weekend was the Herbalife 24 Chris Sailer and Chris Rubio Awards for top high school Placekicker and Long Snapper. Three kickers and three long snappers were brought into L.A. Live for the awards show. The three finalists for the Chris Sailer Award for top Placekicker were Austin Rehkow (WA, ’13), Kevin Robledo (CA, ’15) and Wyatt Schmidt (MN, ’13). The three finalists for the Chris Rubio Award for top Long Snapper were Cole Mazza (CA, ’13), Gabriel Miller (IN, ’13) and Scott Sypniewski (IL, ’13).

Wyatt Schmidt & Cole MazzaThe weekend started off with the finalists that were flown into LAX being picked up in limos and driven to the JW Marriott. Once there, they, and a guest of their choice, relaxed in their rooms and waited for dinner at the ESPN Zone. The first night’s dinner was casual with everyone getting to know one another and to finally see the trophies they worked so hard to hopefully take home the next day.

Saturday started off with a breakfast at the Herbalife building with a presentation on nutrition and supplements. Following the breakfast, the finalists, along with Chris Sailer and Chris Rubio, were driven in a limo to Saddle Ranch restaurant on Sunset Blvd. Needless to say, they ate and ate and ate some more. At 6:00 pm, the Awards show officially started in the Herbalife building at L.A. Live. Everyone in attendance was formally dressed, looking sharp as the tension filled the air.

Master of Ceremonies Wayne Cook of Fox Sports West did a tremendous job as he brought up guest speakers and conducted interviews with the finalists on stage. After much adieu, the winner of the Chris Rubio Award for top high school Long Snapper in the country was presented to Cole Mazza and the winner of the top high school Placekicker in the country was presented to Wyatt Schmidt!

Q & A about High School Football Recruiting

As soon as the football season begins to come to an end, questions start to really creep into a recruit, and their parents’, heads. To begin, if you are a Long Snapper, it is still very early in the recruiting process. Many things can happen from now until you actually step foot on a college campus to start your career. Here are some top questions I am getting through email, text, Twitter, Facebook and even Instagram.

1. Is it me or has recruiting been slow this Fall?
– You are correct and it (recruiting) is always slow in the fall. I call it the “First Thing’s First” period of time. College coaches are obviously coaching during the football season and they are spending a massive amount of time doing so with their current team. Up until about late November, they are more worried about what their current team is doing instead of what their future team will be doing. Therefore, when late November rolls around, most coaches have a pretty good idea whether or not their current team is phenomenal or if their current team is pretty much out of the picture and they can start recruiting next year’s crop of talent. Bottom line, if you are a solid recruit, get ready for a wild ride.

2. Should I transfer since my coach just got fired for not winning?
– Absolutely not! I know you didn’t choose your school based on the coach, so that shouldn’t even matter. Unless you have a massive issue (think Penn St.), you will have to sit out a year and won’t be able to play right away. Therefore, you are asking a future school to pick you up, scholarship you and wait. All the while, when they most likely already have a current athlete on scholarship within your position. Coaches are not into “burning” two scholarships on the same position, especially for a specialist. Think about it, would you pay for a car that you aren’t using? Didn’t think so and neither would the coaches.

3. I have several schools that are recruiting me now and I know many others will be coming on board, should I apply to all of them since application deadlines are right around the corner?
– Absolutely not UNLESS you are CERTAIN you can get in on your own academically and without athletic assistance. It is easier for a school to recruit you later in the process, even after the application deadline, and get you into school IF you have not already been denied admittance. If you have already been denied, they have to pull some MAJOR strings to get you in and they hate doing that unless you’re the stud of all studs.

4. Is it a problem if a school starts to recruit me after the application deadline and I didn’t apply to their school?
– Nope. It doesn’t matter. They (the coach) will literally walk your application to the admissions office and have it expedited through the process. The whole operation can easily take less than a day.

5. If a coach wants my film, how should I get it to him? DVD or online?
– A couple years ago, I would have said both, but today, I am heavily leaning towards simply online. Online is faster, quicker, it won’t get lost, they don’t have to carry it and they can see it anywhere, immediately, if they have their cell or iPad (which is everywhere they are). And, when creating your online highlight tape, be sure to use YouTube and not any other video sharing services. I continue to hear coaches say they only want YouTube since there is NEVER a problem with it’s service.

How to BE a Freshman

BE Quiet – You should be extremely proud of all that you accomplished in high school, but remember just that…it was in high school. If you are lucky enough to play a college sport, you will be surrounded by All-Americans. Get over yourself and keep what you did in the past, in the past. Strive for new accomplishments and dominate.

BE on Time – You should always be at least fifteen minutes early to everything. Be late once and a coach will never, ever forget it. My motto is if you can’t be on time, be early.

BE Responsible – You should know that you are now officially a role model and many people are looking up to you and will want to emulate you. Whether it be the child that wants to be you or the parent that wants their child to be like you, you have a major responsibility to not let them down. Think before you do anything (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). One slip up can hurt you for the rest of your life.

BE Nice – Whether it’s to the equipment guy, kids wanting an autograph, your parents, your tutors or academic advisor, you need to be nice. There is no doubt that all those involved in your life will speak to one another and if you are rude to one, they will all know and begin to look at you in a different light.

BE Assertive – It is very common for the upperclassmen to try and pick on you. It is what they do so get over it. They are simply testing you to see if you belong on “their” team. Advice: stick up for yourself but don’t start anything. IF, and the key word is if,  someone at practice attempts to push you around, push them back. Don’t take any crap or you will immediately be know as someone with no backbone that they (the team) won’t be able to rely on in a time of need. I repeat, stick up for yourself but don’t start anything.

BE Willing and Able to Adapt – When you go off to college, that is your new home. Accept and embrace it. Know that you are making a change and go in with an open mind. It is a new stage in your life and you need to go into it with wide open arms and not continuously talk about, think about or want to be home. If you are obsessing about the past, you can’t live in the present and make your future.

A Parent’s Role in Recruiting

1. Don’t speak to a college coach when they are recruiting your son/daughter.
I have said this one countless times on my Twitter (@TheChrisRubio) and even within this blog, but for some reason, parents still aren’t grasping the concept. The coach will want minimal contact with you. They are recruiting your son or daughter,  NOT YOU! Be cordial and answer their questions IF they are addressing you, otherwise butt out. Like I have spoken in the past, when you were dating your husband or wife, did you want go out on dates with them or their parents? Same thing.

2. Don’t speak for your son/daughter amongst adults.
If a coach, or any adult with some authority, asks your child a question, let the child answer. Nothing worse than when I ask an athlete their height and weight and they either look at mom or dad for them to speak OR the child doesn’t even have the chance to speak before the parent chimes in. In doing this, it shows that the parent is overbearing and the athlete relies way too much on them. This is a red flag for a coach since they immediately begin to wonder if the athlete will be handle real life when mommy and daddy are not around. This one can completely crush your child’s recruit-ability, especially if you are looking at a school that isn’t located on the same block as the athlete’s home.

3. Be Supportive Mentally
This one shocks me, but it is a reality. Many parents simply aren’t supportive at all with their kids and can be downright negative. Very hard for an athlete to believe in themselves if their own parent doesn’t believe in them. You would be surprised at how much an athlete can improve PHYSICALLY when they are encouraged in a positive manner MENTALLY

If you feel this may just be you (little too negative at times), try the Oreo approach. Oreos are a simple food with two black cookies surrounding a frosting center. Think of the cookies as positive statements and the frosting as a negative one. Therefore, if your son didn’t have the greatest snap you would say “Your form is looking good. You had a bit of an issue with not getting your eyes all they way through, but that snap was definitely coming back quick!” You got your criticism in, but sandwiched it in between two positives. Trust me, it works and it works well.

4. Don’t be overbearing
You didn’t really think I would leave this one off the list did you?  If you want something and your kid doesn’t, it simply won’t work out. Going to college or the pros is a wonderful thing, but if both the athlete and the parent aren’t on board, it will never work out or be a train wreck if it does. It has to be a united front or the child will end up despising the parent and the sport. Any positive that once came from the sport will now be looked as a negative. Remember, it is just a game. Instead of really riding your kid before a game and stressing them out, how about just trying a simple phrase like “Have fun out there and try your hardest!”

Being overbearing doesn’t just pertain to parent and child. It can mean flat out harassing coaches, writers and recruiting services. There is very fine line between being persistent and being annoying. You cross it and your child could very easily be blackballed. If your child is that good, they will already know of them and won’t need to be told…over and over again.

Athletes and Dating

High School can be an amazing time for an athlete. They can experience the challenges of some difficult classes, bonding with teammates that will become great friends, playing under the “Friday night lights” and, finally, dating, and possibly, locking into a steady significant other.

Depending on your point of view, the last three words of the above paragraph can either put an enormous smile on your face or make you want to cringe and kick a butterfly. The whole “my son, who is a tremendous athlete, just got a girlfriend and……..” is as old as athletics itself. The issue is how to deal with it.

Now, there are two ways to look at this and I have spoken to coaches about it as well….

  1. One side can be excited for an athlete that locks into a significant other as it can control and tame them a bit. If you have a significant other, you are less likely to be hitting the streets raging with your friends and get into mischief that way. An athlete that is tied down tends to be a bit more subdued on the weekend and, therefore, can get into less trouble.
  2. The other side is not a fan of an athlete having a significant other as it usually means more drama. And, with more drama, comes more mental anguish. The last thing a coach wants is their prized recruit wondering what he did wrong and how he can fix it with his date. The coach wants you focused. And, to clarify, that means focus on school and football.
So, the issue for the athlete is whether or not to get a significant other?  Let’s be honest, it is going to happen. Athletes tend to not have too big of an issue obtaining dates. Not sure if it is the confidence, the dashing good looks, the potential for a ground breaking hug or the ability to be a party trick, but Long Snappers always seem to be with a date(s). Part of the job if you will. Therefore, it’s going to happen.

Then, the issue for the parents of said athletes is whether to let it (flock of dates/locking down to a significant other) happen or “attempt” to put the brakes on it with their parental powers.

I say let them experience life and do what they are going to do. Let them have fun. Let them see what the bad ones are like so they know how to hold on to the good ones. They may even be that one in a million case that ends up with their high school sweetheart. Bless their heart if they are and more power to them. Plus, if you (the parental figure) try to halt it, they will push back harder. Remember, you jumped from birth to parenting without going through the high school years so you don’t know what they are going through at this stage in their lives.

I may sound cold-hearted but it is reality and I have seen it countless times with my Long Snappers throughout the years so I am tad biased. Too many times I have seen this happen…
  • a phenomenal athlete locks into a significant other
  • said athlete “knows” it is the real thing
  • said athlete becomes obsessed with their partner
  • they end up letting it consume too much time in their lives
  • they become distracted from their studies, their sport and lose focus
  • they get passed up on the depth chart and continually make excuses as to why they aren’t playing more or at all.
  • they graduate (sometimes they don’t)  and, for the rest of their lives, wonder what if?

Bottom line, you (the athlete) are young and you should go out and have some fun. Date, enjoy life, lock in if you feel the need BUT remember that unless that significant other is paying your way through college, you might have to cut the strings and live your own life a lot sooner than later.

Building the Perfect Long Snapper

I have been asked countless times what makes up a great Long Snapper. I have taken to an earlier blog to actually spray about it in detail, but I figured I would break down just a tad more. This time I will go from the bottom to the top….literally.

Feet
A Long Snapper tends to have big hoofs and you can usually spot them from behind since they tend to absolutely crush the sides of their shoes from snapping in them. I have witnessed many a Long Snapper actually “blow out” a pair of shoes on the side. Immediate respect from me when I see that occur. Like Sasquatch, very rarely has this been seen live. Usually it is just noticed after that fact.

Ankles
I am happy when a Long Snapper actually has them. Many Long Snappers can break (pun intended) into the “Cankle” territory (calve just blends into ankle, one is never sure where one ends and the other begins). Cankles usually equate to being slow. No embrace.

Calves
They have to be glorious. If this makes no sense to you, you really need to get to one of my camps:)

Hamstrings
Need to be nice and loose. If they aren’t, this will cause issues with speed and follow through. Being flexible is not mandatory but oh does it help. You should almost be able to use your legs like a bow with the ball being like an arrow. Like I say, anyone that breaks their legs backwards gets a high five from me! Seems like a fair trade off in my book.

Bow and Arrow
hammy option

Hips
Also need to be nice and loose. If you look like my 712 year old grandmother Macaw bending over for her cane to hit someone, you probably should start embracing yoga. Hips can be a deal breaker for a Long Snapper.

Butt
The bigger, the better. It keeps your weight back and gives you more power. Positive for balance as well. I cannot confirm, nor deny, but I am willing to put some cash on the fact that Sir Mix A Lot’s most famous song was about top quality Long Snappers. Some great Long Snappers have had huge cans. Of course, no names will be mentioned as to not embarrass them (wink, wink, wink)

Stomach
Free of butterflies (since we dominate under pressure), yet hairy and very itchy. Not sure why, but all Long Snappers continually scratch their bellies. Some really get their paw into it. Unfortunately, the belly button is not off limits.

Paws
A Long Snapper with freakishly long digits is always a positive. Chubby hands may have issues but usually can be worked around. If the palm of your hand looks like a Double Double and your fingers look like Snausages, you might want to embrace being a kicker.

Embrace long digits on a paw

Arms
Long. Duh

Chest
Possible hair. Very strong for blocking. Massive. Requiring constant attention. No matter where or when, a Long Snapper’s chest is fair game…to him. Hence, why Long Snappers are always pulling their shirts off their chest and readjusting. Might be something scientific. I embrace.

Face
Goatee, double duh. Possible beard of glory in November (if you can’t, please don’t, you are only embarrassing yourself…and no Abe Lincoln option). If you are man enough to pull off a ‘stache, you shall do it. Teeth have to be great since your smile helps out with the ladies. Once the smile reals them in, a simple “Oh you don’t know what a Long Snapper is, let me explain…for the next two hours” locks them down. You’re welcome Long Snappers.

Hair
Really?

The Chris Rubio Award

Well, the big announcement has been made and now you all know about The Chris Rubio Award presented by Herbalife 24. The world of Long Snapping will be changed forever. Never has a Long Snapper been honored to this degree at the high school level (or college level for that matter).  THIS IS HUGE!

I gathered you might be a bit confused, so I decided to clarify it a bit for you. Of course, you can find out all the information on the actual website here, but I wanted to double it up for you.

TROPHY:

  • Similar to the Heisman, in that it will be given out every year and there will be two trophy’s. One trophy will go home with the winner and one will stay with Herbalife.
  • The trophy (look up and to the right) stands approximately one foot tall, weighs 30 lbs. and is bronzed (the one you see on the picture/website is just the clay mold of it, new photo coming soon).

CEREMONY:

  • There will be a ceremony at the Herbalife Banquet Hall in LA Live (right next to Staples Center) highlighting the three finalists.
  • The three finalists and one parent will be flown to Los Angeles, CA and put in a hotel for the weekend (Dec 17) by Herbalife.

TO BE ELIGIBLE:

  • You must be an athlete that plays high school football at the varsity level, regardless of state division, or age. You DO NOT have to attend a Rubio Long Snapping / Chris Sailer Kicking camp to win this award.
  • You will notice there is a watch list already of the top Long Snappers in the country. You do NOT need to be on this list in order to win. The list can adjust over the time frame.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • You must be the starter for your high school varsity team.
  • You must not have more than one bad snap all season (snap that gets by the punter or the holder).
  • You must do both punt and p.a.t. snaps.
  • If you have to snap and block for your team, that is looked at in higher regard.
  • The amount of tackles is taken into consideration with the voting.
  • You must have started in 80% of the current year’s games for your varsity team.
  • A Long Snapper’s physical size is NOT taken into consideration in the voting.
  • Other positions played are NOT taken into consideration for voting.
  • To qualify, you may be viewed by Chris Rubio in person, send in film, have a high school head coach’s recommendation, college special team’s coach recommendation or sports writer’s recommendation to be considered eligible. A panel of voters assembled by the Chris Rubio selection committee will vote for the winner.
VOTING:

  • A panel of voters assembled by the Chris Rubio selection committee will be voting. The panel will include: Chris Rubio, Herbalife representatives, past and current NFL Long Snappers, past and current NCAA Long Snappers, past finalists for the Chris Rubio Award, and Sports writers and columnists. Therefore, if you are one of the final three for the award, you will be on the voting committee forever.
IMPORTANT DATES:

  • Last Week of September: A watch list will be announced highlighting athletes that have been recognized as a top Long Snapper through this part of the season. The eventual winner does NOT have to be on the watch list to win the award. This is a simple recognition of those that are in the lead.
  • November 21, 2011: Three Finalists are announced. The finalists will be determined by total votes. 3 points (1st Place Vote), 2 points (2nd Place Vote), 1 Point (3rd Place Vote). In the case of a tie, Chris Rubio will break the tie with his vote.
  • December 17, 2011: The winner will be announced at the Herbalife Banquet Hall at L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles, CA. The winner will be determined by total votes. 3 points (1st Place Vote), 2 points (2nd Place Vote), 1 Point (3rd Place Vote). In the case of a tie, Chris Rubio will break the tie with his vote. *All statistics will have to be verified by your high school head coach before you can be announced as a Finalist.

INFORMATION:
I know you already follow me on Twitter (if not, focus up) and now you will also want to be sure to follow the High School Football Awards Twitter account here for updates and like the Facebook page here for up to the minute information. You can also access the site by ChrisRubioAward.com or HighSchoolFootballAwards.com (both hit the same sight).

Now What?

When I see a Long Snapper go to college & not play, it makes me wonder if they worked as hard when they GOT THERE as they did TO GET THERE

Talent

Just woke up with Long Snapping on my mind. Happens quite a bit as you can imagine. Almost always good thoughts and ideas, but every once in awhile something will creep into my dome and upset me. This thought was one that woke me and wouldn’t allow me to fall back asleep with a smile on my face.

I just recently received a message from a parent that one of my Long Snappers has decided to “retire” from Long Snapping. It happens. I know this. Long Snapping is not for everyone. I get it and I completely understand. I would never want someone to do something they are not really happy with in life.

HOWEVER, it drives me crazy when I think back to some of my Long Snappers that have “retired” simply because they were met with a challenge and couldn’t stand up to it. I think back to many that I have had that hung it up and wasted all of their talent as they came to a new bridge to climb over. They didn’t cross the bridge. They got to the edge, looked at it, turned back around and headed for easy street.

Not everything in life worth doing is on easy street. The sooner you figure that out (talking to all of my Long Snappers right now), the better you will be in every aspect of your life.

Things getting a little tougher? Suck it up. You are fine. Whenever I get stuck in a very difficult situation in life I always think of this statement: Am I the first person to be doing this? If the answer is no, then I am pretty darn sure I can do it. And I do! I use that little statement continuously in everything I come across (from playing football, to going through hell week, to graduating, to finding a job, to getting married, to having kids, to having my wisdom teeth removed, to flying for hours at a time, to making deadlines, to simply getting out of bed sometimes).

As some point in your life you need to realize how much talent you really do possess. You need to realize that if someone else can do it, that you also can do it and, for the love of all that is holy, you can do it better. What is stopping you? YOU?! Get up and go. Get it done. Do your drills. Do your homework. Eat your food. Don’t eat your food. Be a human being that people want to respect and hang out with….for good reasons. Enough excuses.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TALENT! If for any reason alone, you will upset me:) Now go have a great day. Make today better than yesterday. Go!
